What is Diffraction?

• Diffraction

–the bending of waves around the edge or the corner of a barrier

–Amount of diffraction is dependent on the wavelength and size of the opening barrier

Page 3: Properties of Waves: Diffraction

How waves diffract?

• Waves can go through a hole in a barrier and spread out. Or

• Waves can bend around a barrier

Page 4: Properties of Waves: Diffraction

Diffraction

• It is only significant if the size of the opening is about the size of the wavelength.

• Larger openings produce less diffraction.

Examples

• The spreading out of waves in the oceans.• A laser beam scatters after passing through a

small slit.• Sound diffracting around corners or through

door openings• Owls are able to communicate across long

distances due to the fact that their long-wavelength hoots are able to diffract aroundforest trees and carry farther than the short-wavelength tweets of songbirds.
