Transforming a lifetime of savings into a lasting legacy.

With an Ameriprise IRA, you have flexible options that can help you preserve your wealth for future generations to enjoy. This strategy, called a stretch IRA, could benefit anyone, but it especially benefits those who don’t plan to use all of their IRA assets during their lifetime. Not all IRA custodians nor employer-sponsored plans offer this flexibility.

Take steps today to ensure you can use the stretch IRA strategy. Review your IRAs and other retirement accounts. If your plans don’t allow you to provide for future generations, consider consolidating your accounts in an Ameriprise IRA.Update your beneficiaries. Remember, the beneficiaries named in your accounts, not in your will, receive the assets upon your death. Consider adding a special beneficiary restriction to help ensure a lifetime of income for your beneficiaries.Plan a withdrawal strategy. Your financial advisor can help you plan your withdrawals in order to leave the amount you wish to your heirs.

How does the stretch IRA strategy work?This strategy works by allowing the beneficiary of the original IRA to take distributions over his or her own life expectancy — thereby easing their immediate tax burden. Subsequent beneficiaries continue distributions calculated using the life expectancy of the initial beneficiary as if he or she were still living.

To help ensure there are assets remaining in your IRA in the event of your death, work with your financial advisor to help determine an appropriate withdrawal rate, if any, prior to age 70½. Then, after age 70½, you may want to only withdraw the required minimum amount.

Beneficiaries of an Ameriprise IRA will have different options depending on whether or not they are the spouse of the decedent, under the stretch IRA strategy.

Spouses have two options:> Move the inherited IRA into their own name and become

the owner of the account, subject to current IRA rules.> Maintain the IRA in beneficial status. Depending on when

the original IRA owner dies, distributions from an IRA in beneficial status may not be required for many years.

Non-spouses have one option:> Maintain the IRA in beneficial status and begin taking

distributions based on the beneficiary’s own single life expectancy. Distributions are required to start in the year following the year of death. Subsequent beneficiaries must continue distributions based on the life expectancy of the initial beneficiary, not their own.

Non-individuals may have one option:> Maintain the IRA in beneficial status and begin taking

distributions based on the deceased IRA owner’s life expectancy.

The following hypothetical* illustration shows how a $100,000 IRA balance could lead to more than $1.2 million in payouts to three generations using the stretch IRA strategy.

Joe’s million-dollar legacy.At age 63, Joe rolls his 401(k) balance of $100,000 into an Ameriprise IRA. His IRA earns 7% per year and he does not withdraw any assets until age 70½. At age 70½, Joe begins withdrawing the minimum required amount, with the remaining balance continuing to earn 7% until Joe’s death at age 78. At this time, his IRA is valued at $196,530.

Joe’s beneficiary, his wife, Ruth, is age 69 when Joe dies. Ruth rolls Joe’s IRA into her name to postpone required distributions until age 70½. Then, she begins taking only the minimum distributions required. Her balance continues to grow at 7% and totals $261,841 upon her death at age 85.

Ruth’s beneficiary, her son, Bob, is age 50 when Ruth dies. Bob must move the account into an inherited IRA and begin taking required minimum distributions. Assuming the IRA continues to grow at 7%, his balance will total $370,073 upon his death at age 75.

Bob’s beneficiary, his daughter, Chloe, must continue the required distributions in amounts calculated as though her father were still living. For this example, distributions continue for 10 years ending in a zero account balance.

After stretching the IRA to three generations of heirs, the total amount distributed is over $1.2 million.
