Background The customer is required to perform peri- odic calibration for a continuous tank level transmitter to satisfy regulatory require- ments and improve operational effective- ness for its animal health division. The Promass 83F Coriolis flowmeter is used as a traceable calibration standard with an accuracy greater than the required accuracy of the equipment being calibrated. Application description The customer is required to perform con- tinuous tank level transmitter calibrations to ensure FDA conformance in their plant. The calibration of level devices may require a transfer standard which can provide an accurate totalized flow value in either a mass or volume engineering unit. Many plants have vessels that use level transmitters to measure the quantity of materials within the vessel. Associating the height of material in a vessel with a mass or volume can be difficult due to dished bottoms and other equipment affecting the tank geometry. The level measurement device needs to be characterized via a strap- ping table for each unique vessel shape to ensure accurate measurement throughout the depth of the tank. A portable transfer standard was deployed. This solution conforms to the requirements for calibration in the pharmaceutical in- dustry and supplies a traceable ISO-17025 accredited calibration. Coriolis meters pro- vide highly accurate measurement of mass and volume flow over a wide operating range, allowing small, incremental totalized flow values to aid in the calibration and characterization of level transmitters.
