Northeastern Extension Total Reconstruction and Widening ProjectSouthern Section Construction
Mid-County Interchange to Berks Road (MP A20-A26)This six-mile construction project encompasses the southern half of the total reconstruction and widening area and includes the area between the Mid-County Interchange and Berks Road (Mileposts A20.31- A25.67). The project traverses the Townships of Plymouth, Whitpain, and a portion of Worcester, in Montgomery County.
The existing four-lane roadway (12-foot travel lanes, with a limited left-lane shoulder and eight- to 10-foot right-lane shoulder) is being reconstructed to accommodate six 12-foot travel lanes with 12-foot left and right shoulders. Additionally, the northbound and southbound Turnpike lanes will be divided by a 52” concrete glare screen.
Construction on the southern section began in early 2011 when the contractor, Walsh Construction, placed six miles of concrete barrier along the right shoulder of the northbound and southbound Turnpike, establishing a safe work zone. Work has included clearing of trees and shrubs, excavating the existing roadway including the demolition and removal of rock, installing erosion and sedimentation control measures, and laying the new pavement.
Work is underway at the mainline bridges (see graphic to the right) and, with a few exceptions, traffic will be maintained on the Turnpike and on local roads throughout the construction. Prior to mainline roadway construction, three overhead bridges (Walton Road, DeKalb Pike, and Bethel Road) were reconstructed to accommodate the widening.
When the mainline reconstruction of the travel lanes and shoulders is complete, vehicles can utilize all six lanes, and the contractor will continue with some minor work within the Turnpike right-of-way. Construction of the mainline is anticipated to conclude in late 2013.
The northern section of the total reconstruction and widening project area, located between Berks Road and the Lansdale Interchange (Mileposts A25.68-A31.5), is in final design. Early-action bridge replacements have been completed at Kriebel Road and Morris Road and the Sumneytown Pike (SR 63) bridge is currently under construction through 2013.

Wetland Mitigation - Norristown Farm ParkThe Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) is undertaking compensatory mitigation projects to make up for the loss of an estimated 1,300 feet of perennial streams and just over 2 acres of wetlands that will be per-manently impacted by the construction of the Northeastern Extension Total Reconstruction and Widening Project between the Mid-County and Lansdale Interchanges (MP A20-A31). More specifically, two separate projects are currently underway: one to establish new wetland areas and another to restore a section of Stony Creek. Both projects are located in the Norristown Farm Park in East Norriton Township and Norristown Borough, Montgomery County.
