Architects, engineers, constructors, geospatial professionals, owner-operators, and governments improve quality of life for all by creating and operating the buildings, roads, bridges, airports, water and power distribution systems, plants, and other structures and systems that help sustain society, the environment, and economies around the globe. Nowhere is this work more evident than in the Middle East, where infrastructure projects continue to be launched to meet growing demand for services ranging from transportation to electric, gas, and water utilities; industrial processing and manufacturing; medical; cultural; communications; and more.

The infrastructure professionals in this region tend to be early adopters of advanced information technologies, including those that facilitate information mobility across multiple disciplines and the infrastructure lifecycle. They recognize that information mobility can lead to improved asset performance by enabling them to leverage information modeling through integrated projects for the creation and operation of intelligent infrastructure. Intelligent infrastructure is more resilient to natural disasters, safer to work and live in, and more energy efficient and sustainable – all while providing owners with a greater return on investment.

This Middle East Project Showcase provides examples of their inspiring and innovative project work, including:

• the USD 3.2 billion, 750,000-square-meter Midfield Terminal Building at Abu Dhabi International Airport;

• Imarati Engineers & Consultants’ use of i-models to implement BIM-based program management from the initial design phase through facilities management;

• Saudi Electricity Company’s kingdom-wide engineering document management system based on the ProjectWise system of collaboration servers and services in support of high availability, load balancing, distributed processing, and open standards; the system was implemented by Nahil Computer Company;

• the USD 18.9 million Qatar Petroleum project to create intelligent as-built models of offshore facilities using laser scanning and engineering drawings for enhanced asset management and maintenance;

• the General Directorate of Izmir Water and Wastewater Authority’s IZSU geographic infrastructure information system project that stores data on 4,200 kilometers of water pipeline, 43,770 water fittings, 2,820 kilometers of wastewater pipeline, and 74,720 wastewater fittings;

• Henning Larsen Architects’ USD 151 million project to create Two Crystal Towers (including an 18-story tower and a 26-story tower) within a new financial district in Saudi Arabia’s capital city of Riyadh.

Each of the projects shown in the pages that follow was nominated for a Be Inspired Award honoring the extraordinary work of Bentley users improving the world’s infrastructure. Collectively they serve as a testament to the ability of infrastructure professionals across the Middle East to address the infrastructure demands of this thriving region, resolving challenges – great or small – along the way using their talent and advanced technology.

BE INSPIRED AWARD FINALIST – INNOVATION IN BUILDING

Located in the heart of downtown Burj Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, the Dubai Mall will be one of the largest malls in the world. One of the major challenges in building this complex megaproject is quantifying the structural concrete works. The contract required Consolidated Contractors Company to provide detailed quantity surveying valuation sheets and bill of materials for every concrete element in the more than 30 buildings. This demanding task was budgeted to require a team of 25 members on site for at least three years to deliver an average of 360 valuation sheets per building, totaling about 1,000 pages per quantity surveying document.

Consolidated Contractors Company’s Building Information Modeling center created a Bentley solutions-based quantity surveying system to provide an accurate, efficient, and automated tool for developing monthly valuation sheets and used MicroStation VBA and TriForma to develop all the needed tools, utilities, and quantity surveying systems incorporating all the business rules and methods of measurement boundaries. The system automated production of more than 95 percent of the quantity surveying valuation sheets while drastically improving the quality and efficiency of the quantity surveying process. As a result, the cost of this task was reduced by more than 65 percent.

Qatar Civil Aviation Authority is adding capacity at the New Doha International Airport in preparation for the 2022 World Cup Tournament in Qatar. DSD Ferrometalco was tasked with fast-track delivery of steel for the EUR 80 million cargo terminal currently under construction. The company detailed, fabricated, and shipped 18,000 metric tons of steel by truck from Egypt to Qatar within 12 months, which was a company record.

The shipments included curved trusses, handrails, beams, and columns with complex configurations. Using ProSteel enabled DSD Ferrometalco to meet the tight schedule. Modeling revealed optimal designs for efficient construction and reduced waste in material and cost. Shop-welding trusses reduced bolted connections by 30 to 40 percent. A 25 percent reduction in bolts and spice plates shortened erection time.

The Arab Potash Company produces potash by processing carnallite crystals extracted from Dead Sea brine. Due to receding sea levels, a new intake pumping station was required for operations at Safi, Jordan. Challenges included selecting materials to withstand the corrosive brine, designing for a location with poor geotechnical conditions, reducing power demands of hydraulic pumps, and testing a possible 400 structural load combinations.

Dar Al-Handasah met these design challenges with the help of MicroStation and PlantSpace, which allowed the team to coordinate design by incorporating all disciplines – mechanical, structural, geotechnical, and electrical – into a single model. The model was then used to extract drawings, plans, sections, and details for the contractor. These savings in design time led to cost savings for the USD 180 million station.

The Izmir Waterworks Authority (IZSU) developed the IZSU Geographic Infrastructure Information System to store infrastructure assets in an Oracle Spatial database. Existing IZSU data was migrated to Oracle Spatial and information from multiple sources was converted to the new environment. The Geographic Infrastructure Information System stores data on 4,200 kilometers of water pipeline, 43,770 water fittings, 2,820 kilometers of wastewater pipeline, and 74,720 wastewater fittings. About 300 IZSU personnel access the data through four websites.

Geo Web Publisher and ProjectWise Geospatial Management Server were used for the enterprise GIS. Bentley’s water and wastewater schema were localized and a Turkish interface was developed. MicroStation VBA was used to develop custom user interfaces for easy reporting and data entry. By reducing rework and conversions, the IZSU system reduced man-hours by approximately 20 percent.

The Federal Electricity and Water Authority (FEWA) of Ajman, United Arab Emirates, is responsible for the site supervision of installation works for maintenance of transmission lines, distribution water networks, and groundwater tanks in the Ajman water network. The utility also supervises the operation of the distribution center, develops an annual plan for scheduled maintenance, and prepares all reports and payments.

These supervisory and administrative duties have been made less time consuming through the use of WaterCAD, which accelerates information sharing and communications across project teams that include FEWA staff and contractors. As a result, project outcomes are accelerated, ensuring that FEWA’s more than 239,000 consumers are better served.

As the first multistory hotel to be built on stone, this USD 30.24 million project was to design the Shvan Hotel in Erbil, Iraq. Since optimal foundation design is created through a combination of piles, mats, and slab used with a combined stirrup between columns, Hamkar’s challenge on this project was to find an innovative way to design the 33-story tower while controlling financial factors.

Hamkar used RAM Structural System and RAM Concept to optimize workflows through the creation of a single model and to coordinate environmental, political, legal, economic, and cultural variances that can act as barriers to completing a project such as this. The software helped the design team communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and proactively prevented any potential conflicts that might arise.

The Abu Dhabi Oil Refining Company (Takreer) Ruwais refinery expansion will increase Takreer’s refining capacity by 417,000 barrels per day and double its production of transportation fuels. The USD 10 billion project is being developed in eight packages: crude distillation and sulphur recovery facilities, a residue fluidized catalytic cracker, off-sites and utilities, storage tanks, infrastructure work, marine works, and two packages for site preparation works.

GS Engineering & Construction was contracted for USD 3 billion package 2, which involves generating more than 70,000 general arrangement, piping isometric, and other drawings. MicroStation provided 3D modeling that was carried out at three locations in South Korea and India, with automatic work sharing made possible by Bentley solutions. Using MicroStation to automate the production of drawings improved production quality and efficiency.

BE INSPIRED SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARD WINNER – INITIATIVE IN INFORMATION MOBILITY

THE MIDDLE EAST PROJECT SHOWCASE

Imarati Engineers & Consultants (IEC) uses i-models to implement BIM-based program management from the initial design phase through facilities management. ProjectWise provides a collaborative environment for the client, design consultants, and contractors who are geographically dispersed across the United Arab Emirates and Europe. The use of i-models allows quick and safe project information exchange from both Bentley BIM and Autodesk Revit platforms.

IEC uses i-models for critical applications such as precise and detailed material quantities extraction using SQL interrogation. Navigator Mobile enables IEC to access and interact with i-models using mobile devices. As projects enter the construction phase, i-models provide BIM updates. On one project alone, IEC processed multiple mechanical/electrical/plumbing system i-models to generate reports in just two hours instead of the estimated 780 hours it would have taken to process the information manually.

The USD 230 million Sheikh Zayed Bridge will be an iconic gateway to Abu Dhabi Island in the United Arab Emirates. Award-winning architect Zaha Hadid conceptualized the structure to represent desert dunes, defined by continuous sweeping asymmetric arches that pass through the center of the bridge to then splay outside the deck and provide the entrance to the island.

The arches support two 24-meter-wide post-tensioned concrete decks, each carrying four-lane highways. Since the irregular shape of the structure posed engineering challenges, the extensive analysis required to investigate problems and find design solutions was performed using RM Bridge. A 4D step-by-step analysis of the construction sequence enabled swift resolution of any issues, resulting in cost savings during construction.

A collaboration between LAB Architecture Studio and ERGA Progress, the Guardian Towers project in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, is a mixed-use complex comprised of an 18-story residential tower, 18-story commercial office tower, and a two-level retail podium. The offset tower footprints break the static tradition of extruded, rectangular tower blocks.

LAB Architecture Studio used GenerativeComponents for extensive testing and visualization of the double-skinned façades and fritted glazing, which

were designed specifically for the extreme heat and humidity of the locale. The project was delivered two months early with considerable savings, and the office and residential towers are now fully occupied. Utilizing MicroStation streamlined not only the complexities of the design, but also the logistical challenges of the team of international partners.

This USD 6.5 billion design project of railway horizontal alignment, profiles, and cross sections extending from Haditha Point to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, is of vital importance to the national economy for phosphates processing as well as for transportation of industrial goods, products, and passengers. Development adjacent to the railway will advance industries to the north.

Using InRail (now Bentley Rail Track), the design team optimized the earthworks to reduce embankment/excavation and minimized environmental impact on adjacent properties and facilities. Comprehensive surface editing, profile creation, and cross-section tools provided flexibility in the design of ballast, formation, roadway, and earthworks. Ultimately, the railway will reduce air pollution and car accidents, save travel time, and facilitate clearance in ports.

In order to achieve the sulphur recovery efficiency of 99.5 percent required by Qatar’s environmental regulations, Larsen & Toubro was retained to upgrade an existing sulphur recovery unit that extracts/recovers sulphur from two acid gas removal unit trains and a proposed third train.

The project team only had a short time to develop a conceptual design and release preliminary material take-offs. PlantWise automatically created piped 3D plant concepts so the project team was able to estimate the exact location of pipes coming from another unit to avoid interferences in pipe routing. The toolset improved the project’s productivity and efficiency.

Abu Dhabi Gas Industries is conducting a pilot test of gas recovery and injection at the Habshan Gas Processing Plant north of the United Arab Emirates’ capital city. The USD 90.7 million project must be completed within 34 months. To bid on the lump sum turnkey project, Larsen & Toubro performed detailed engineering and construction modularization using Bentley solutions.

PlantWise expedited the pre-bid engineering package development, AutoPIPE calculated loads on critical lines, and STAAD.Pro checked the

structural feasibility of piping runs. PlantWise generated annotated general arrangement drawings to ensure no clashes. Interoperability enabled fast and efficient 3D model generation, data sharing among disciplines, and shorter review times. Compared to other platforms, 3D modeling cost 2.25 times less using Bentley solutions.

The Lootah office towers are two high-end commercial towers, each with 23 floors of office space, underground parking levels, and a ground floor with landscaped gardens. MSN Prestressed Concrete was retained to design the post-tension slabs and suggest possible cost-saving modifications to the structures. The total capital cost of the project is USD 85 million.

RAM Concept accurately calculated and displayed the precompression in the slab, which helped select the size and location of an expansion joint and the pour strips required to minimize any shrinkage cracking. The parking and ground floor, each 10,000 square meters, were post-tensioned to save costs. Due to the size and presence of retaining walls, careful analysis was undertaken to ensure effective precompression of the concrete.

In association with Gulf Consult, Mouchel was commissioned by the Ministry of Public Works in Kuwait to undertake the study, design, and construction supervision for the construction and maintenance of the Regional Road South Part (Section One). The regional road will form part of the international Middle East Arab highways network under the Development of the Integrated Transport System Program.

Over 40 engineers and an additional 50 experts across all civil engineering disciplines collaborated on this USD 11.3 million project. Qatar Petroleum facilities on three offshore platforms and one island had no as-built master engineering records. This USD 18.9 million project created a consolidated as-built 2D/3D master engineering record for asset management and maintenance. Qatar Petroleum converted all P&IDs to intelligent 3D models and extracted and updated as-built inspection isometrics, piping general arrangement drawings, and layout drawings. Logistical restrictions included working in highly congested and potentially hazardous offshore facilities.

Qatar Petroleum reverse-engineered the facilities through 3D laser scanning, intelligent modeling, and 2D drawing verification. The scalability and intuitive interface of AutoPLANT products allowed for quick deployment. PlantWise saved time extracting 2D drawings. Bentley Navigator, ProjectWise, and Bentley i-models facilitated reviews and data sharing among contractors. Qatar Petroleum completed the project in 43 months.

Plans for Saadiyat Island in the United Arab Emirates include residential, retail, commercial, hospitality, entertainment, cultural, recreational, and public facilities as well as landscaped open space. The Stone Towers business park planned for a 180,000-square-meter site in Cairo, Egypt, will combine world-class office facilities with retail stores, food and beverage facilities, and a five-star hotel. The towers comprise 550,000 square meters above ground and another 600,000 square meters below ground. Inspired by the patterns and textures of ancient Egyptian stonework, the tower facades will be covered with recesses and protrusions that capture the effects of light and shadow.

Bentley’s design software resolved initial concerns regarding collaboration among the project team and other consultants in the United Kingdom and abroad. The file-referencing system and streamlined workflows among multiple disciplines allowed the team to cross-reference complex 2D and 3D information to efficiently produce a fully integrated and coordinated design.

Saudi Electricity Company was established in 2000 with the merger of dozens of electricity producers throughout Saudi Arabia. At a cost of USD 2 million over 12 years, eight subprojects consolidated and standardized Saudi Electricity’s information infrastructure in an enterprise-level engineering document management system (EDMS) based on ProjectWise.

ProjectWise enabled Saudi Electricity to support high availability, load balancing, distributed processing, and open standards, which allows integration with other enterprise systems. Nahil provided the software, implementation, training, support, and backlog conversion and migration of all technical documentation into the EDMS. Nahil is also the Bentley SELECT support partner providing kingdom-wide support.
