Project SHARE Fall 2012 Making a difference….after school – every day!
Seek the lofty by reading, hearing, and seeing great work at some moment every day. -Thornton Wilder
SHARE is beginning it’s 6th full year…..and what
full years they have been! I want to personally
thank each of you who have committed to
sharing your life with children. And a special
thanks to those who have been with us since
the beginning. Because of you, our students
receive the care, love and attention necessary
to help them become productive adult citizens.
Each year we offer a variety of opportunities for
students and this year will be no different. Take
advantage of these opportunities and the
professional development that is offered. You
owe it yourself and to your students!

Program SpotlightNorth Woods Discovery School Becomes a Cer fied Healthy Behaviors Learning Center
The team at North Woods Discovery School has been hard at work implemen ng the Healthy Behaviors Ini a ve at Project SHARE! This ini a ve calls for programs to demonstrate exemplary efforts in making physical ac vity and nutri on part of their core mission, teaching students about healthy behavior habits, and increasing food sustainability for students and families.
Over the last year, North Woods has started the “Super Snack” program, gardening projects, cooking clubs and increased organized physical ac vity! This has been a daun ng and challenging process for Diana and her team, but their hard work paid off on October 10th, when the SCOE Board presented Diana and her team with a plaque and achievement award, cer fying them as a Healthy Behaviors Learning Center! Congratula ons Diana, Sherry, Reanna and Jessica! Well done!!!
Chrysalis’s Awesome Olympics Week
Let’s give it up to Sarina Leitz for her super crea ve Olympics Week club at Chrysalis Charter School! Throughout the week students would choose a country to research and learn interes ng facts about. Then they would represent “their country” compe ng in various Olympic events! What a great way to teach students about an important current event in a fun, engaging and interac ve way – all while the Olympics were happening in London! Great job, Sarina! Keep it up!

Last year robo cs was a great success! Project SHARE reached an all‐ me high in par cipa on program wide, bolstering a great turn out at the Robo cs showcase with 10 sites represented. This year we are looking to recharge the robo cs program in hopes of building on the successes of last year and even surpassing them. The realiza on of this goal will be accomplished through three major changes taking place within the robo cs program. The first of
such changes is the addi on of two robo cs veterans to our robo cs team, Ben Murray and Ryan West both seniors currently compe ng on Shasta High Schools robo cs
team. The second change will be to create an atmosphere of true compe on at this year’s showcase, recognizing winners in each category of compe on. The last of the changes being made is the addi on of an
en rely new compe on at this year’s showcase. While we cannot disclose all of the details as the robo cs team are s ll working out the frame work, we can tell you it will be based in naviga on of a bot via a wireless remote. While the focus of robo cs this year is recharging through change, it is important to recognize the most important determining factor in the overall success; the hard work and dedica on being made day in and day out
at sites. Let’s make it another great robo cs season! ‐Austin

We are thrilled to be in our pilot semester of a new service learning partnership with Shasta College. Certain Project SHARE sites have had the privilege of working with a college student advisor each week. The college student leads a service learning club and guides younger students through the process of planning, implemen ng and evalua ng a service learning project. Project SHARE students are an integral part of the project as they choose what community needs they are interested in learning more about and then plan what ac ons to take to meet the need. The college advisors are developing leadership skills as they serve our children. A number of exci ng projects are already underway. West Co onwood School is involved with a project to raise money for Haven Humane. Bella Vista students are concerned about the nega ve effects of smoking and have designed a no‐tobacco campaign. Shasta Union Elementary School had a lake clean‐up day and enjoyed helping the park rangers. Meadow Lane School students are par cipa ng in a campus clean‐up project. These are just a few of the community needs our students care about and are involved in. We are excited to con nue this valuable partnership with Shasta College in order to enrich the meaningful learning experiences we offer for students.
