Image Set #1

Image Set #1 Review• Was the shoot successful?• I found the York photography shoot to be a success. Although the weather was not great

and I found the conditions difficult to work in, I believe I captured a good set of pictures for my final images.

• Are any of the images you produced going to be in the final set?• I have selected three photographs I captured in York to be in my final set of images.

• What post-production could occur?Final Image 1:I felt like the original image I captured was slightly dull and therefore used the sky replacement method to insert a new sky and blend it in. I also used to dodge tool to lighten the path and the burn tool on the tree branches. Final Image 2:I didn’t edit my second image too much as I felt like it was fine how it was. I did used the spot healing tool on certain parts of the photograph. I also used the dodge tool on the water to lighten the colour.Final Image 3:For this image, I adjusted the Hue and Saturation to intensify the colours and used the spot healing tool to perfect certain parts.

Image Set #2 Filey

Image Set #2 Review• Was the shoot successful?• I was able to produce some successful images from this shoot however, a factor that made

the shoot rather difficult was I didn’t have a tripod which meant capturing the images with enough light was a task.

• Are any of the images you produced going to be in the final set?• For the final set of images, I chose two photographs from the Filey shoot.• What post-production could occur?Final image 4:I felt like this image didn’t need any post production as when I uploaded the image to Photoshop and tried to edit it, I felt it looked better unedited.Final image 5:Due to the original image being extremely dark, I had to used the dodge tool to lighten the whole image. I used the same tool on a smaller scale to make each light in the background appear brighter.

Image Set #3 Scarborough

Image Set #3 Review• Was the shoot successful?• I found the shoot I did in Scarborough to be the most successful out of the three separate

shoots I did. The conditions for taking photos was the best as the weather during the York shoot was not the best and the shoot in Filey was done in the dark.

• Are any of the images you produced going to be in the final set?• I chose three images from the second image set of be in my final selection.• What post-production could occur?• I decided to do the most post production on these images;Final Image 6: I used the hue and saturation tool to make all of the colours within the image appear more vivid and also used individually selected the people within the image and make their clothing brighter. I opted for the burn tool to make the sky a darker blue and corrected some areas of the image using the spot healing tool.Final Image 7:Again, I adjusted the hue and saturation of the image to correct the dull colours, I also darkened the sky and used the paint tool on a low opacity to make the sky appear slightly pink.Final Image 8:When I was reviewing the images I had taken, this one stood out to me however the original picture was overexposed and therefore I used Photoshop to correct the colours. After doing this I decided the colours would look better even more vivid and therefore adjusted the colours once again to brighten the image.

Final Image #1

What are your initial opinions regarding this image?

- Looking back at this image, I feel like I could have edited the photo to make the colours even brighter. This image is my least favourite out of my final 8.

Final Image #2

What are your initial opinions regarding this image?

- I like the colours within this image. I feel like the clear sky makes the image seen calm as does the different shades of blue reflected in the water.

Final Image #3

What are your initial opinions regarding this image?

- Looking back at this image, I think I could have made the colours brighter by adjusting the hue and saturation even more however, I do like the image.

Final Image #4

What are your initial opinions regarding this image?

- Along with image 6, this is my favourite image. Although it doesn’t meet all the requirements to be a landscape image I still believe it is one of the most interesting pictures I captured as I like the angle in with the image was shot. To create the spooky sort of look I used the flash of the camera which worked well in creating an atmosphere.

Final Image #5

What are your initial opinions regarding this image?

- I really like this image, I think the lights towards the back of the photograph make it more interesting and the completely dark sky makes the viewer focus on the middle of the image.

Final Image #6

What are your initial opinions regarding this image?

- This is one of my favourites of the 8 final images. I feel like the whole picture feels extremely spacious and calm. I like how there is only two people in the picture and it almost feels like they are isolated. Within the image, there are a lot of leading lines which draw the eye across the scene.

Final Image #7

What are your initial opinions regarding this image?

- The bridge in the image creates a frame for the scenery in the background which I like. I also enjoy the colours within the image as they feel very naturalistic and real.

Final Image #8

What are your initial opinions regarding this image?

- I like the sense of space captured within the photograph. Looking back, I feel like I selected the wrong colours for the image as they don’t feel very realistic.

Evaluation - Composition• Discuss elements of visual language that refer to the composition and image

constructionThroughout my work, particularly during the Scarborough shoot, I noticed a large amount of leading lines which guide the viewers eyes through the photograph. This can be through geometric shapes such as the bridge in image 7 or organic shapes such as the shape of the sea in image 8.In image 7, the bridge creates a frame for the scene behind it which I think makes the image much more interesting. I feel like the similar colours of the sky and the sea work extremely well as they contrast with all of the unnatural colours of the city.

Evaluation - Audience• Does your project meet the identified audience in the proposal? What social groups and

genders should view this work?

In my original proposal, I mentioned that I wouldn’t be targeting a particular group of people as the work will be rather neutral however women may show a wider interest. I believe the images I created meet this criteria as they don’t appeal to only one particular gender of age bracket or a particular social group.

• Does it contain political views that would appeal to an audience?Throughout my work, I didn’t want to include any political views that may put people off my work.

Peer ReviewI like all the photos. I like image 6 the best because the image feels really calm and this make the photograph appealing. The image of the trees is interesting as it is different to all of the other final images which I like, the angle of the picture makes the trees look even larger than they are.

Evaluation - Context• What previous work has influenced your project? • I believe the tasks we have previously done have influenced my work, such as the photo

montage task where we had to complete a sky replacement. This technique was used in some of my final images.

• Has it been influenced by race, religion or politics? The work I did was not influenced by any factors such as race, religion or politics as I wanted to keep my work open to a large audience.• Do the contexts identified in the proposal meet your finished project? I believe I managed to meet all the contexts that I mentioned in my proposal in image final images.

Evaluation – ContextDiscuss each of the following as a future use of your imagery Blogs – using blogs as a way of distribution would be good as people who are searching for a particular thing e.g. landscape photography would be able to view my photographs.Photo sharing website – websites such as Tumblr would be ideal for my images as I believe many people would see and share them.Stock images – I’m not sure of the success that my images would have being classed as stock images as they are not specific.

Evaluation• Have you achieved what you aimed to do with your images? If so, how? If not, why?Yes, I wanted to produce landscape image that would be interesting to a wide range of people which believe I have done.• Are the images fit for purpose? Could they be entered into a competition?I feel like the images I have produced could be entered into a photography competition as I believe they are professional and fit for purpose.• Have you received negative or positive feedback? Give examples and be critical regarding

any further changes that may be necessary.I received positive feedback from a peer talking about two images in particular. I have been critical of myself on not using a tripod to capture images at night and not editing the images correctly.• Consider the technical qualities of the images – How well has exposure, depth of field and

post-production been controlled?I believe I could have made the images at Filey more of a success if I had used a longer shutter speed to allow more light into the camera however, not having a tripod meant I couldn’t hold the camera still and the images were coming out blurry.• Consider the visual impact of the images – How artistic? Are they black and white or

colour? Justify your rationale behind your choices.• I believe my images have quite an impact as they locations I shot on are extremely

beautiful. I have kept all of my images in colour and have no monochrome images although image 4 looks as though it has been altered.

Evaluation• What skills and knowledge have you gained from the project?I believe I have widened my editing skills as I have learnt a great deal of techniques I didn’t know before which I will be able to apply to projects in the future.• What can you do now that you could not? Is there anything else you need to learn about?I can now use techniques such as colourising an image which I didn’t know how to, this skill may be useful for other projects. I can also perform things such as a sky replacement on an image and am able to make it look natural.• Do you feel that you managed your time on the project well?I think time management is one of my main problems however I was able to mostly keep on track throughout the project, I ensured I did the York task when the whole class went to do it and the Filey and Scarborough shoots in my own time.• And finally, self-evaluation on any other comments, notes, production logs, sketches, trial

shots.• If were to do the project again, I would use a tripod with the night photography section I

did in Filey. This would allow me to set the camera to have a longer shutter speed and therefore more light would be allowed into the lens and the image would be light and therefore require less editing.

• I would make more notes and sketches before shooting to get a clear more thought out idea of what I am wanting to produce.
