Project Practical Completion Report PROJECT DETAILS Title Sewer Pipe Bursting – Tozer to Dudley Streets, West Kempsey Scope This project replaces an aged and damaged sewer main located in the Wigay Aboriginal Cultural Park. This site was once an old landfill site but has been capped and abandoned. The site is now the Wigay Aboriginal Cultural Park, which boasts numerous native food flora of importance to the Aboriginal people. Due to this cultural importance the pipe bursting method was deemed to be the best method of renewal of this asset. Due to issues occurring during wet weather events in the localised area (particularly Dangar Street) it was also deemed appropriate to upgrade the size of the sewer main from 150mm to 315mm. Pipe bursting consists of using a hydraulic pulling machine attached by steel rods to a bursting cone that is pulled through the existing pipeline breaking it and pushing the existing earth out to incorporate the larger pipe diameter with the pipe being dragged behind the bursting cone. The process utilises minimal ground disturbance with only 4 excavations required for the process to be completed. The replacement pipe is 315mm polyethylene which should give the new pipeline a theoretical lifespan of 100 years as well as increasing capacity in the network. undertaken to alleviate impacts of moisture ingress into the pavement to ensure appropriate pavement moisture levels could be achieved. Stabilisation work was highly successful.

2 Subsoil drainage was required in selected locations in order to further relieve subsoil moisture and improve pavement drainage.

3 Wet weather impacts resulted in lost time of approximately 2 weeks.

4 Project program was impacted due to COVID-19, mainly due to scheduling difficulties during April / May 2020.
