RASHTRIYA SWASTHYA BIMA YOJANA (RSBY)
Launched in 2008 by the Ministry of Labour & Employment.
A registration fees of only Rs 30 Facilities of treatment worth Rs 30000 ( in
patient care) per year/family Empanelled hospitals using health cards.
COMPREHENSIVE HEALTH INSURANCE SCHEME (CHIS)
- Introduced by the Government of Kerala
- It provides medical insurance to both APL & BPL households (APL households to pay the full premium).
-Success of the programme depend on awareness
To know the RSBY CHIS coverage in ward 14 & 15 of Ettumanoor panchayath.
To study the awareness of the population about RSBY CHIS
To know the util isation of RSBY CHIS among enrolled families
To study the selected factors associated with the awareness and enrollment of RSBY CHIS.
• Study Design : Cross sectional analytical study
• Study Setting : Wards 14 & 15 of Thellakom subcentre area,Ettumanoor Panchayath
• Study Period : 1 month (02-05-2014 to 02-06-2014)
Sample size : 385
(According to CHIAK,the coverage of RSBY CHIS is 80.97 % in Kottayam district.Based on this data & using the formula, 4pq/l2 ,the minimum sample size was calculated to be 385)
Study tool : Semi structured questionnaire
• The study was conducted among 336 families of the selected region which included 1447 individuals.
The respondents were asked 8 questions to assess their awareness about the scheme.

• 225 familes (out of 336) enrolled in medical insurance schemes - 175 famil ies enrolled in RSBY CHIS.
• 22.85% of the families have used the scheme at least once , majority for chronic illness
• The 2 important factors associated with enrolment are awareness level & socioeconomic status.
• 41.67 % - Good Knowledge ; 25.6% - Average Knowledge & 32.73 - Poor Knowledge
about the scheme.
• More awareness programmes• Maximum insurance amount be raised• Extend the list of empanelled hospitals• Clearly define the enrollment criteria & procedure
or APL families.• More counters,more staffs at the hospital• Include more healthcare facilities• Timely release of funds by Government to the
empanelled institutions.
• The decision maker of the family was not available.
• More APL families with high educational status in the study setting.
