1.0 Project Report

1.1 Description

Our project identified and analyzed several different online project management

certification courses. Our group began by narrowing our scope from all online

project management courses to those that offered certificates or served as PMP

preparation courses. The traditional university courses were filtered out because they

were too different from the certification courses to provide a useful comparison.

After our scope refinement, we selected all the appropriate courses and began our

online research. We complimented this online research through a telephone survey,

which enabled us access to more detailed unpublished data. Following the data

acquisition, our group compiled and presented our findings in a user-friendly efficient

website table. Our final deliverable can be utilized by potential students/instructors

as an easy way to compare metrics among existing online project management

certification courses.

1.2 Purpose

The purpose of our group’s project was to enable easier analysis and comparison

of online project management courses. Currently there is no centralized

documentation related to online project management courses. Because of this lack of

consolidated information, it is very time consuming to track down and compare

course offerings from different educators. One is forced to search course-by-course

looking through many different sources of online data, which is usually incomplete

2

Page 3: Project Notebook.doc

anyway. Consolidation of this data will enable students and or businesses a quick and

definitive way to choose the most appropriate course for their needs. By checking

how their most important metrics are answered on our consolidated table they can

quickly choose the course best suited for them. This data can also be used by

instructors that want to create or improve their own online project management

course offerings. Posting these results on the local MN PMI website would provide

good visibility and ensure that potential students or instructors see value in this

project.

1.3 Deliverables

The HTML enabled course consolidation table was the main deliverable produced

in our project. Throughout the semester, data pertaining to several online project

management courses was acquired. Some of this data was acquired through online

research. This required identifying appropriate online courses and then obtaining as

much data as possible from their external website. This method provided the basic

information about most courses.

We generated a telephone survey to answer several other questions that were not

addressed on the courses external websites. Combining both sets of data we were

able to create a powerful set of information. We now needed an efficient manner to

distribute this information.

Our group had planned to use some type of spreadsheet. We quickly decided that

an HTML table would provide us the most flexibility. This table would allow us to

provide a quick and clear view of the important data for each school. Several

3

Page 4: Project Notebook.doc

columns in our table which could provide more detailed information included a

hyperlink to additional consolidated data pertaining to that school. We found this to

be the most efficient method for communicating the large amount of data. HTML

was also the preferred medium for our final data because it would allow easy

integration with the local MN PMI website if they chose to post our results.

1.4 Project Management Tools

Microsoft Project 2002 was the primary project management tool used to assist

with our group’s project. We used Project 2002 to help create and organize our work

breakdown structure. Our group made detailed use of the predecessor column within

Project. Nearly all tasks were related in some manner to one or more tasks. This

helped us ensure that all dependencies were accounted for and helped us remain on

task throughout the life of the project. The use of Project 2002 helped prevent our

group from being overloaded with work at the end of the project cycle. The Gantt

Chart and Tracking Gantt Chart provided excellent visuals of how our project was

planned and how we performed throughout the project. Our group was able to

closely follow our original schedule with some extra time added to the collection of

survey data. Because of our small group size we did not utilize the resource

management utilities within Project 2002. Finally, Microsoft Word and Excel were

the primary means for our group’s project documentation. All of this documentation

is included later in our notebook.

4

Page 5: Project Notebook.doc

1.5 Successes

There were several successful components driving our project. Our group’s most

obvious success was our ability to work effectively as a virtual team. Acting as a

virtual team could easily lead to poor communication or lopsided contributions.

However, our team established clear communications immediately through email,

telephone conferences, and meetings. This enabled our group to remain on schedule

and ensure equal participation. Another project success was our course identification

strategy. We needed to filter out courses which did not satisfy our scope, while not

missing or eliminating appropriate online project management courses. This success

helped drive our list of the top online project management certification courses. The

final success which is apparent is the user-friendly nature to our HTML table

deliverable. This not only presents all of the data collected on our courses, but it

presents the data in a very efficient and easy to read fashion.

1.6 Complications

There were limited unexpected problems that our group encountered while

progressing on our project. The largest problem that our group encountered was a

poor survey response rate. Early on we anticipated this problem and decided to

proceed with telephone surveys as a proactive measure. However, we experienced

difficulty contacting the “right” people in some cases. Additionally, we played

phone-tag or received delayed call returns from several other contacts. These

problems required our group to push out our schedule for our completed survey

results by one week. This caused us to fast-track several tasks that had this data as a

5

Page 6: Project Notebook.doc

dependency at the beginning of our project. Finally, we experienced schedule set

backs because of team member’s illnesses and vacations. These set backs were

compounded by our groups small size, only three members strong. Despite these

complications our group was able to successfully complete the project we began at

the beginning of this semester.

1.7 Lessons Learned

Our group has already alluded to several important items that we have learned

throughout our work on this project. Some of our groups learning has been though

our successes and other portions have been the hard way, though our problems. We

learned that we needed to be even more proactive or aggressive with our survey data

collection. Although, the accelerated schedule of this project would have made that

difficult to improve. Our group learned first-hand the effectiveness of

communication among a virtual team. This is a very important lesson in today’s

business environment. Especially in larger corporations there is constant cross-site

development. Communicating effectively between team members in different states

and countries is an important skill to have. Finally, our group learned and followed a

very organized Project Management oriented project. This was evident when

compared to some of the poorly managed/disorganized projects that we have seen in

our careers.

Project Title: Online Project Management Courses Research

Project Start Date: 10/14/03 Projected Finish Date: 12/09/03

Project Manager: Matthew Ellavsky, (507)-292-5902, [email protected]

Project Objectives: The objectives are to research current online project management

courses, placing emphasis on short duration courses which provide training to pass the

PMP examination. The analysis will include data metrics on what the cost of each

program is, how many hours of training are provided, how many students are in each

class, how many hours of training (if any) are done in person, how testing and grading is

done if applicable, and is there any supplemental information like software, CD’s, or

videos related to the courses. There will be additional focus on acquiring qualitative

information from instructors on what they like and dislike related to the online nature of

their courses. The information we compile can be used to help create or enhance an

online project management course into an efficient and user-friendly learning

environment.

Approach:

Create survey and send to current online project management course contacts to obtain quantitative and qualitative information about their courses.

Research online documentation and information on current project management courses through internet searches.

Present compiled data on current courses in a user-friendly environment from our team website.

2.2 Scope Statement

Project Title: Online Project Management Courses ResearchDate: 10/20/03 Prepared by: Matt Ellavsky

Project Justification: Kathy Schwalbe, the project’s sponsor, proposed this project because of the growing demand to learn about project management. More and more employees and individuals are focusing on the project management field. Employees are driven by employers who want them to have PMP certification. Individuals are driven by the growing demand for certified project management professionals in the job market. Several colleges and private companies have started courses designed to introduce people to project management. Many of these courses are geared towards helping the students receive the 35 training hours and information needed to pass the PMP exam. Our sponsor would like our team to analyze the market related to current online project management courses. We will be compiling both quantitative and qualitative data on these existing courses. This will provide our sponsor with the best and most effective attributes from the existing online courses. This information can then be provided to any organization interested in creating or altering their online project management course.

Product Characteristics and Requirements:

1. Compile quantitative data (generated from online research):o how much each course costso how many hourso how many students per courseo is it entirely onlineo is there any supplemental info (software/videos/etc)o how is testing/grading doneo is the course accreditedo etc

2. Compile quantitative data (generated from a survey):o how much student/instructor interaction is thereo what do instructors like most/least about their online courseso what do students like most/least about their online courses

3. Create website for project notebook and as a means to display all required presentation data.
