Ma On Shan Sports Centre and Ma On Shan Public Library
Ma On Shan Sports Centre and Ma On Shan Public Library at the junction of On
Chun Street and On Yuen Street in Ma On Shan was completed in July 2004. Built
on a 10,336 sq m site next to an existing swimming pool complex and town park,
the indoor recreation centre and library will help to create a focal point of
community facilities for local residents.

TThe 6,701 sq m Ma On Shan Sports Centrefeatures a multi-purpose design thatincludes two basketball courts, one tennis
court, eight badminton courts, two volleyballcourts and a handball court. Other social andrecreational amenities include a table tennisroom, an activity or dance room, a fitnesstraining room, a children’s playroom and achess or reading room.
The roof of the recreation centre is the mosteye-catching feature of the project, rising 22.1metres and adopting an oval-shaped design.The sports arena occupies an area ofapproximately 62.4 m by 36.7 m and has afixed seating capacity of 1,000 and 256moveable seats in the main arena. The roofspans 70 m end-to-end, is supported by twosets of structural steel trusses and is clad with

aluminum roof sheeting. The roof is indentedin the centre, ensuring that the structure doesnot create a bulky appearance when viewedfrom neighbouring buildings. The indentedsection also features a skylight to admit naturallight into the sports arena and to dispersesmoke in case of fire.
The 3,450 sq m Ma On Shan Public Libraryis a two-storey structure rising to a height of15.4 metres. The building is formed by twoadjoining blocks, circular and rectangular in

shape, to house various functions and services.On the ground floor, the circular-shaped sectionis the Children’s Library and a newspaper andperiodicals room is also included. The firstfloor of the circular wing is the Adult’s Library.The rectangular-shaped section comprises themain entrance, an exhibition area, two activityrooms and a computer and information centre.Users can gain access to the first floor viastaircase or lift. The block also houses a staffroom, a reading room, a computer andinformation centre and an audio-visual room.

The circular shape of the library was selectedto provide easy and efficient access to differenttypes of books and periodicals. Visitors standingat the centre of the library can easily see aislesand bookshelves at a glance. the penetration of natural light and glazedwalling is used on the external walls of theAdult’s Library on the first floor.
A sitting out area has been provided in theproject’s landscaped public open space tosupplement the two structures and enhance theoutdoor environment.
