Project management within the construction industry

description

This was a presentation given by Mike Paterson, Operations Director at Bancon Construction, to the APM Aberdeen chapter membership on Thursday 30th October. When you consider it, the construction industry is one of the largest industries in the world. It is more of a service than a manufacturing industry, but its success affects every one of us. The provision of housing, offices, warehouses, retail parks, roads and infrastructure are only a few aspects of the industry that touch our lives every day. The goal of a construction project is to build something. Projects can be large or small, built in differing environmental conditions anywhere in the world. Time, money, labour, equipment and materials are all resources consumed by a building project. Processes within such an industry need to be dynamic, are often complex and at times can prove frustrating for both contractor and client. Construction methods have changed over the last 15 years beyond recognition. The talk enlightened the audience on the many facets of the construction industry, and how effective project management is used on a project from greenfield to key handover. The effective project manager needs to adapt to many roles and has many responsibilities to keep pace with an ever changing set of tasks. Current and future demands on the industry highlight problem areas, and the talk will also explain how these are likely to be addressed harnessing technology and manufacturing methods employed by other sectors.
