What Is Surrealism?

Surrealism- A style of art in which dreams, fantasy, and the human mind are sources of ideas for the artist.

Elements of Surrealism• Disorientation‐Odd vantage points,abnormal proportions,

levitation,enlarged details• Juxtaposition- Synonymous with contrast, two objects or texts that

oppose one another• Unexpected Juxtaposition –Things that don’t usually go together• Anatomical Surprises –Human or animal features in unnatural places• Animated Inanimate Objects –Giving life to non‐living objects• Metamorphic Creatures ‐Merging objects in to one, swapping character

traits between objects• Association of Complementaries- This Looks like something else,

identifiable shapes used in unnatural circumstances, borrowing characteristics

• Non Sequitur- Seems absurd to the point of being humorous or confusing, the use of non sequitur in humor can be deliberate or unintentional. The non sequitur can be understood as the converse of cliché.

• Brainstorm ideas on how YOU can combine images that you took and images that are found into a surrealist photography project.

• Rough Sketch out ideas on how you want your image to look

• Jot down your ‘plan’ on completing the project
