2019 sectoral approach
Following the decision of the
SBS Board of Directors on
September 26th, EFESME was
awarded the call for proposals
for the SBS sectoral approach
for the lift sector. For the third
year, our Federation will
undertake on behalf of SBS ad
hoc actions aimed at enforcing
the representation of lift SMEs
in the standardisation process,
as well as representing SBS in
the relevant technical groups
other than CEN and ISO.
With the 2019 proposal,
EFESME intends to consolidate
the positive work started in
2017, when the sectoral
approach on lifts has been
established. The whole SBS
project, including the sectoral
approach, has recently
received positive remarks on
occasion of the management
meeting held between the
consortium members and the
European Commission.
The Secretariat will keep you
informed on the activities
through the newsletter and the
publications on our webpage
and the social media.

European Lift Congress - Heilbronn
This year, the European Lift
Congress Heilbronn 2018
took place in Villingen,
Germany, on October 16th-
17th. Representing EFESME
was one of our experts, Mr
Giuseppe Iotti, author of the
summary below.
Elevators are progressively
becoming a part of the cities’
"logistics"- they are inside
the buildings, but they are
a l so co nne c t ed w i t h
horizontal and/or inclined
public mobility systems.
The issues dealt with during
this year's edition have
therefore been inter -
disciplinary, concerning both
the regulations and the most
advanced technologies. These
expert i ses a re today
particularly influenced by
digitization, by robotization
and its connections with the
"cloud" (also known as
Industry 4.0), and by the
growing connections between
interacting components
( In t e rne t o f Th i ngs ,
abbreviated in IoT).
The main topics, then, were
preventive maintenance,
control of passenger and
material flows to, inside and
from buildings, and the use
of virtual reality techniques.
These technologies are being
developed by elevators and
e l evat o r s componen t s
m a n u f a c t u r e r s , a n d ,
consequently, a large amount
of data must be processed.
We can see here the theme
of "big data" and their
problematic management -
Will such management of
data be as safe as traditional
technologies, and how will it
work? The attention to the
issue of information security
was one of the main topic of
the conference.
Coming to the specifically
elevator-building techniques,
during the conference new
plant traction philosophies
have been discussed, in
particular those that will not
use suspension means,
which, in one way or another,
have always been present
from the invention of Otis
until nowadays.
Hence, in this context
ThyssenKrupp Elevator seized
the opportunity to illustrate
both in theory and in practice
its innovative concept of
construction of light cabins;
these cabins can travel not
only in the vertical direction,
but also horizontal, thanks to
a magnetic field traction. This
concept has been shown in
practice during a whole
afternoon spent by the
congress participants in the
test tower built by the
German company in the
nearby city of Rottweil.
In add i t i on t o th i s
experimental installation, the
tower houses a series of
TWIN plants, which are
already a commercial reality.

This solution consists, as
already known to the market,
in two cabins travelling
vertically in the same well,
suspended with ropes at two
different machines, one set
over the other.
These demonstrations took
p l ace i n a rea l i s t i c
environment, being the tower
245 meters high, thus
simulating a real skyscraper
from the point of view of
elevator motion and number
of stops.
Vlillingen proved to be a
welcoming place for congress
participants, who were
offered a perfect gala dinner,
and this was also a useful
moment to exchange
opinions and experiences
between the participants and
the speakers. Indeed, these
speakers represent the best
the elevator world offers
today for what concerns
experts in the field; they
work both in large companies
and in those realities dealing
with consultation and security
checks, as well as in the
associative world.
This latter sector includes
EFESME, which I had the
honour to represent in this
important pro fessiona l
environment.

SBS Lift Forum on Digitalisation Lifts reaching the Cloud
On December 18th, EFESME
organised the SBS Lift Forum
on Digitalisation, in the
framework of the 2018 SBS
sectoral approach. Its’ also
the second forum of this
kind, after the successful first
edition last year, when the
agenda was focused on
standardisation itself. This
year event, moderated by Mr
Eugenio Quinteri from EBC -
E u r o p e a n B u i l d e r s
Confederation, gathered
experts, both from the
European Commission and
for the lift sector, national
stakeholders and members of
different organization.
After the welcoming address
by Mrs Christel Davidson,
SBS Director, and Mr
Massimo Bezzi, EFESME
President, the first of the two
sessions of the day, more
purely focused on the
Digitalisation, began with the
presentation of Mr Luis Carlos
Busquets, Policy Officer at
the European Commission,
DG CONNECT, Unit E3 (Cloud
and Software). Mr Busquets
presented the Cloud Policies
of the European Union,
underlining the importance
and potential of the free flow
of data and of the Cloud
s y s t e m i n r e s e a r c h
programmes.
The first session continued
with Mr Véronique Willems,
S M E U n i t e d S e c r e t a r y
General, who spoke about
the digital transformation for
SMEs, the challenges that
this process poses to small
and medium-sized European
companies, and which might
be the best approaches in
this regards. Mrs Willems
also made available to our
guests an valuable SMEUnites
position paper on digitization.
Fo l lowing SMEUni ted ’s
presentation, the forum went
more into details with Mr
Vesa Katajisto, Policy Officer
at the European Commission,
DG GROW, Un i t C3
(Advanced Engineering and
Manufacturing Systems).

Mr Katajisto, who is the EC
contact point for SMEs for
what concerns the Lift
Directive and the Lift sector,
explained the Commission
Standardisation Request
M/549 to CEN, its and its
Annex.
The second session, on the
other hand, saw two
presentation, one from Mr
José María Compagni and the
other from Mr Luciano
Faletto.
Our first speaker, Mr
Compagni, is Academic
Director at Docensas,
associate professor at IE
University, as well as
Coordinator of FEPYMA, the
Spanish federation of SMEs of
elevators, has a long and
valuable experience in the lift
sector. He decided to focus
his presentation on the
Spanish national register,
introducing our guests to the
two Spanish lift registers: the
Public register of elevator
companies and the elevator
equipment registration. The
data concerning lifts available
in these registers are
submitted by electronic
means, hence underlining
again the growing importance
and potential of Digitalisation
for the lift sector.
Finally, Mr Luciano Faletto,
EFESME Secretary General
and ISO expert, showed the
importance of shared and
available instruction for use,
presenting as a poignant
example of the lack of shared
standards the disastrous
consequences of the 1904
Baltimore fire, which led to a
nation-wide standardisation
of firefighters equipment
around the United States.
This example served Mr
Faletto to introduce the topic,
and to underline the need of
instruction for use and how
to improve their availability.
After the end of the
presentations, which are
already available on the
EFESME website, the Q&A
session offered positive
inputs for reflection, which
were used by the speakers to
go more in detail on certain
topics.
EFESME and SBS thank all
speakers and participants
and invite all interested
people to the 2019 edition of
the SBS Lift Forum.
