EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The main purpose of “Direct Awareness Campaign” was to inform and educate families,

religious leaders, area Wakil-e-Guzar and elders in key regions of ‘Khoshal Khan Mena,

Rahman Mena, Parwan 2, 3 and Deh Now-e-Deh Bury’ to get connected with new water

supply for Kabul, to pay registration fee, to improve application procedures for house

connections and knowledge of the residents towards drinking water, health and sanitation

habits and to build and restore the confidence of people towards the water distribution

system and improved the consumers knowledge to close the tap, protect the meter and pay

the bills.

The first component was to educate families on formal petitions for new water connection in

order to get connected with Kabul Strategic Business Unit (KSBU) and the activities sought to

enable relevant residents to follow their application procedures with Kabul Strategic

Business Unit.

The second Component was to educate households on the side effect of using common

types of wells water, hygiene and differentiation, and the importance of tap water with the

stream.

The project was ended in 31st of December, 2013 In relation to the objectives set for its core

activities. ‘Direct Awareness Campaign’ implemented successfully in close coordination with

Afghan Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Corporation (AUWSSC), Kabul Strategic Business

Unit (KSBU) and Water for Kabul Consultants.

During door-to-door campaign homemakers, elders and female students were trained by 8

women team through promotional materials, focus groups, and stakeholder workshops.

This success is reflected in the achievement of the Goals and Objectives of the project as well

as the overall impact of the project. These were divided into five themes; Training of female

Trainers (ToT), assessment survey, door-to-door campaign, stakeholder Workshops, Focus

groups and training of female students, promotional materials and educational Notebooks

TRAINING OF FEMALE TRAINERS

ACTIVITY STATUS

Hold 1x2 day practical and technical training of female trainers by WHMO and FICHTNER office.

For the purpose of ‘Direct Campaign’ WHMO along with Water for Kabul Consultants trained eight female on technical and hygiene issues as set forth: 1. What is water meter 2. Protecting water meter 3. Pay water Bill, tap booklets 4. Reading water meter and filling household

forms) 5. Sources of pollution/contamination:

o Households (sewage and excreta) o Commercial enterprises, e.g. car

workshops (oil, other chemicals) o Agriculture (fertilizers, pesticides)

6. Differentiation of tap water and common good water, hygiene and sanitary issues.

The training was organized on 24th of May, 2012.

ACTIVITY STATUS

Hold 1st female door to door visit:

The first component of the campaign was organized Simultaneously in project targeted regions by 8 trained female trainers. Within the first year of the project the below households were trained:

1. 2,858 households trained in Khoshal Khan Mena,

2. 1,659 households in Rahman Mena, 3. 1,569 households in Parwan 3 and 4. 1,040 households in Deh Bury regions,

And totally 7,127 households and 49,889 male and female were trained regarding what is project’s objective? Training promotional materials, (what is water meter, protecting water meter, pay water Bill, tap booklets, reading water meter) introducing a formal procedure, distributing materials and filling the relevant forms of the project.

Hold 2nd female door to door visit: The second visit was the complementary process of the first. The campaign held in the targeted region and within this phase WHMO female team trained the below households:

1. 1,652 households in Rahman Mena, 2. 950 households in Deh Bury, 3. 2,874 households in Khoshal Khan Mena, 4. 1,652 households in Parwan 3. This phase was conducted on application procedures, pollution of the environment, and comparison of tap water with common wells water, watering plants and greenery and waste of tap water. During application procedure, the owner of the property was registered and the formal applications of households were signed by property owners. And totally 6,565 households and 45,955 male and female trained regarding project objectives. WHMO established Telephone wire system in order to solve its beneficiary’s problems and other relevant technical problems of the project and relevant problems were reported to Water for Kabul Consultants.

Hold 4x1 day opening stakeholder workshop for

1. Rahman Mena, 2. Khoshal Khan Menn, 3. Deh Bury, 4. Parwan 3,

WHMO in coordination with Water for Kabul Consultants, Afghan Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Corporation (AUWSSC) and Kabul Strategic Business Unit (KSBU) organized project opening stakeholder’s workshop in four targeted regions. Each workshop participated more than by 50 area Wakil-e-Guzars, religious leaders, street representatives, teachers, police officers and community elders. The key themes of workshop were discussed by

2. Mr. Eng Latif Muzafarkhil the head of Kabul Strategic Business Unit (KSBU),

3. Mr. Friedrich Fahrlander and Mr. Wahab Karimi.

The main purpose of these workshops was too aware area people on project objectives and advantages of tap water and stimulate elders to support WHMO female team during campaigning in their regions.

ACTIVITY STATUS

Hold 1x1 day focus group for Khoshal Khan Mena.

The training was held for religious leaders of Khoshal Khan Mena, which was participated by 15 participants At the end of this training, the religious leaders discussed that they would sermon about importance and value of water in the view of Islamic beliefs through Masques loudspeakers during Friday prayers. The FG was held on 18th of October, 2012.

Three training was organized for female Students and teachers of Khoshal Khan Mena. The key issues of importance of clean water, keeping cleaning water in a particular container, wishing hands after and before a meal, pollution environment Water Supply System, registration process and conditions, water value and source of tap water, water based on Islamic principles discussed by trainers.

Hold 4x1 day focus group for Khoshal Khan Mene elders and Wakil-e-Guzars.

The training was participated by Wakil-e-Guzar, Street's representatives and elders of Khoshal Khan Mena. The key issues of Water Supply System objectives, elders responsibility against this process, registration process and conditions, water value, the source of tap water, water based on Islamic principles, waste of water were discussed. The elders committed that they would discuss this issues with others in the community and would inform the inhabitants on New Water Supply System. The FG was held on 07 July - 16, 24 October – 01 November 2012.

At the end of the project, WHMO in corporation with Water for Kabul Consultants, Afghan Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Corporation (AUWSSC) and Kabul Strategic Business Unit (KSBU) organized stakeholder’s workshops for Khoshal Khan Mena, Parwan 3, Rahman Mena and Deh Bury Elders and Wakil-e-Guzars in order to complete project registration process of their relevant households and get connected with Kabul Water Supply.
