Organic Gardening
The definition of organic gardening is gardening without synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. It is also a philosophy of gardening that supports the health of the whole system.
Understand the importance of organic farming and gardening
• It aims to produce food while balancing the ecology to conserve soil fertility and to prevent pest problems.
• In regular farming, synthetic fertilizers and pesticides are used, causing groundwater pollution. But in organic farming, organic fertilizers are used. This enhances the soil structure and water infiltration too.
• Organic farming reduces non-renewable energy use as well as the greenhouse effect and global warming.
Growth mechanism of organic vegetation The organic compost/manure is made and then it’s
scattered on the ground. Then it is absorbed by the ground. Oxidative decomposition takes place within the ground and then mineralization takes place, in which the minerals are released. This is how plants get healthy nutrients, how we stay alive, and this is how we can reduce problems associated with the weather and natural resources.
Composting and preparing of organic manure
Compost can be prepared from a wide range of organic materials including dead plant material (forest litter, crop residues, weeds etc). Compost making is an efficient way in converting all kinds of biomass into high value fertilizer that serves as a good alternative to farmyard manure.
Ways to conserve the environment• Use a compost bin as this helps to recycle food
waste and biodegradable material.• When going shopping, make it a habit to use your
own eco-bags.• Try carpooling to work, events, errands and school.• Reduce emissions from car by walking or cycling.• Try using public transport for everyday travel.
How organic agriculture helps in reducing global warming
Organic agriculture relies on the techniques such as crop rotation, green manure, compost, and biological pest control. These techniques are eco-friendly, as no chemicals are used in them, which contribute to the increase in temperature causing global warming. And also, no carbon is produced.
The benefits of organic gardening• It helps to protect our families from toxic pesticide residues
commonly found on fruit and veggie skins.• Organically grown food is significantly higher in the essential
vitamins and nutrients that our body uses in it’s defense against cancer.
• This is also a way in which we can exercise and feel relaxed too.
