The project will also replace and upgrade existing signs on the mainline and on exit ramps, upgrade ADA ramps and replace the median barrier on the Hayden Island Bridge and near the North Broadway exit. Project Need The pavement along Interstate 5 between the Interstate Bridge and Moda Center has deteriorated. The roadway surface is showing signs of raveling and patching. Repaving will maintain the roadway and avoid complete replacement. It was last paved approximately 15 years ago. Project Elements Include • Repaving approximately six miles of Interstate 5 between the Interstate Bridge and Moda Center. • Repaving exit and entrance ramps along I-5 in the following areas: Northeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard/OR 99E (near Marine Drive), North Victory Boulevard, North Lombard Street, North Rosa Parks Way, North Going Street, North Winning Way and Northeast Weidler Street. • Sidewalk ADA ramp improvements. • Improved signage, sign relocations and more visible street names along the project corridor. • Median barrier replacement. Major closures to Interstate 84 ramps connecting to Interstate 5 this summer ODOT is replacing the concrete and steel on the ramps that carry 147,000 vehicles on an average day. This work is needed to keep these bridges functioning for you for decades to come.
Why do the bridges need to be closed for two weeks?After crews complete repairs to the bridge joints and remove existing concrete, the new concrete will need time to cure before traffic uses the bridges. Currently, we expect curing time to take at least three days. Placing traffic on the bridge before the concrete has time to cure will result in rapid deterioration of the new surface. That results in wasted time and funds and more closures in the future.
How will these closures affect my commute?During the closures, we expect delays from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. on I-84 and surrounding interstates. Travelers should consider alternative transportation.
Will city streets see congestion during the closures?City streets will also see delays due to people avoiding the backups on I-84. Even if you do not use I-84, expect to see congestion on the city streets that you depend on every day.
What is ODOT doing to help deal with the expected gridlock?We are working with the City of Portland, Multnomah County, TriMet and C-Tran to address the increase
in congestion on alternate routes. Details about how we plan to help our streets work better during the closure will be available in early summer.
I absolutely must drive this route and plan to sit in the traffic. What are the detour routes?During the ramp closures, travelers do have the options of following detours that will take you to your destination using the available ramps and Interstate 405. But it will be a long, frustrating drive.
