PREFACE The projects in this portfolio are a selection of works that I developed during my years of study at the Acad- emy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart from 2003 till 2006. All projects displayed in the portfolio are in a way the result of team work. I see architecture as an operat- ing field where discussions, diverging opinions and knowledge are crucial in order to come up with mo- mentous questions and to eventually take the best decisions and work out sophisticated solutions. Certain issues kept coming back to me frequently dur- ing my studies. In my portfolio the projects are catego- rized by six topics which function as sort of umbrella term for the respective issues.

  • LAUGARNES REYKJAVIKINTENSIFYING LOCAL FORCES

BACKGROUNDThe proposal for Laugarnes was my diploma project at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart. The topic and the site were chosen by myself. The following is an excerpt from my diploma agenda:

In brief the Proposal seeks to investigate national and site inherent phenomenons by analyzing back-ground and meaning of the site, as well as its spa-tial qualities and disadvantages in order to develop a site specific program and appropriate design-filter, leading to a site specific approach and identity form-ing architecture. Because of its interwoven historical and environmental layers, Laugarnes in Reykjavik is an ideal ground for experimental intention.

PROPOSALThe Design aims to invigorate Laugarnes in its role as a recreation area as well as a site of national heri-tage. National and local phenomenons or forces are analyzed and conceptually transformed into a force field, where the so called Minjar Points are the repel-ling forces. The resulting differentiated field divides the site into zones of preservation and intervention. The zones of preservation are left untouched, while the zones of intervention densify into volumes that host the site specific programs, such as the Laugar-nes Spa, the Laugarnes space of Intervention, (an in-stitution responsible for informing visitors of the area as well as organizing events and interventions), the extension of the at Laugarnes located Academy of Arts and the curved-in, green datacenter. At the tran-sitions of the two zones the design aims to underline the different matters (Sand, Turf, Stones) of the site and to support the interaction between the visitor and the manipulated environment.

The Republic of Iceland is a European island country located in the North Atlantic Ocean. The island has its own government, a population of about 320,000 and a total area of 103,000 km. The official language is icelandic. Its capital and largest city is Reykjavk, whose surrounding area is home to some two-thirds of the national population.

Laugarnes is the last piece of land at the north coast of Reykjavik that is barely tilled. One of the reasons why Laugarnes is more or less untilled, might be that a huge part of the site is placed under preservation order as it contains both historical heritage and places of historic interests. In a survey report from 2001, Laugarnes is considered to be one of few sites in Iceland where the history of the nation can be traced without a gap. Even though Laugarnes seems to be rather prominent it currently serves as a local recreation area.

Where in the world would people place an old vegetable garden under preservation? - Probably only where the popula-tion density is as low as in Iceland! Bringing the places of preservation in relation to the population density of the country and in relation to the building density of the site leads to a new perception of the site and to the idea of a force-field as a design-filter which to look through in order to intervene in the logic of the site.

  • ADD ON WINTER / ADD ON SUMMERTRANSFORMABLE LEISURE EXTENSION

BACKGROUNDThe concept and design of the add-on was a part of an exercise at the seminar Theory of Building Design and Building Typologies supervised by Prof. Nico Fritz and his assistant Martin Nauman in the winter semester 2006/07 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart. The position of the add-on was given in the exercise. It was supposed to be situated on a 65m roof of a backyard workshop, a fire division wall on the west side of the roof had to be maintained. The roof was accessible from a flat on the 2nd level, which belonged to a house in wilhelminian style.

PROPOSALHaving a closer look on the flat and its situation, the inner space seems very separated from the outside. Only a small balcony allows the inhabitants to step outside and have a chat with a neighbor or to keep track of the environment, of the weather and of the growing plants and greenery. The proposal aims to create an extension that opens up the possibility for the inhabitants to be closer to their surrounding and to dwell in a lighter, more open and communicative space, somewhere in between the inside and the out-side. To enable an all-season usage the extension is intended to be transformable going from a winter con-dition (more closed, with a sauna) to a summer condi-tion (more open, with an outside basin).

  • IN BETWEEN A BLANK TYPE AND THE CITYA SMALL OFFICE AS AN INTERFACE

BACKGROUNDThe concept and design of In Between is a part of an exercise I did with my colleague and friend Beatus Kopp at the seminar Theory of Building Design and Building Typologies supervised by Prof. Nico Fritz and his assistant Martin Nauman in the summer se-mester 2008 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart. The task was to find a spot and create a solution for a small architectural office (for two people) at an inter-esting place in the city of Stuttgart.

PROPOSALBrainstorming about possibilities of positioning, brings us to the idea of using the Breuninger, a department store in the center of the old part of the city, as a frame-work for our office. As a blank type, the Breuninger-building has a glass facade, i.e. display windows on the ground floor, but except for those windows there is no visual connection to the outside, which makes the building quite uninflected and clumpy to look at from the market square it is standing at. Currently the two sides showing towards the market square are wrapped up with banner advertisement. Our sugges-tion is to fill up some of the space between the blank type and the banner advertisement with a small con-ference and office space. The spot at the Breuninger is perfect for an office, that likes to play with the urban situation by interacting with its surrounding and the inhabitants of the city. While offering a very prominent and central situated spot for a small office, the Bre-uninger also benefits as its advertising becomes more interesting, being partly lightened, 3-dimensional and liven up by the space behind it.

BACKGROUNDThe concept and design of Princess Serendip - a bookstore with an integrated caf is a short project I did with my colleague and friend Sandra Meireis in the framework of a seminar called Linger on! - Coffee House Workshop supervised by Prof. Nico Fritz and his assistant Martin Nauman in the winter semester 2006/07 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart.

PROPOSALAs we think that Stuttgart is overloaded with very ex-troverted and extravagant bars and lounges we want to create a place that is more introverted, a place where you can have decent conversations instead of screaming in each others ears, a place that seeks to hide rather than to show all its glamour, a place where you can share your thoughts with your environment whether on stage or just one on one, a place for tran-quility in the center of the city allowing you to forget all rush and hurry. Altogether: a place that is focusing more on the inside than the outside.

    1) Hide where no one would seek

Serendipity is the effect by which one accidentally discovers something fortunate, especially while looking for something entirely unrelated. (Wikipedia) By accident (or serendipity?!) we came across this expression and thought of a strategy that might tease out this effect.

Wanting to cre-ate a place of tranquility, we seek to settle at one of the most frequented places in Stut-tgart. Der alte martz an old stationery shop has moved out and leaves an empty spot at a very central and interesting place in the city of Stuttgart.

Der Palast is a popular place in Stut-tgart, especially on long, warm sum-mer evenings. After a hot day in the city, people take a seat on the warm ground and the place, that is more or less a passage over the daytime, trans-forms into a communication platform. This condition disturbs the dynamic movement of people walking by and makes the movement slow down.

Instead of having a structure trans-forming in time, going from an active movement to a slowed down or disturbed one in cycles of daytime or seasons, we decided to have the structure transform-ing in space, going from an active level to a linger level.

  • URBANATUREPAVILION FOR THE ECO-EXPO

BACKGROUNDThe Urbanature pavilion is the final result of a series of workshops I took part in summer semester 2006 at Prof. Tom Verebes studio called Eco-Expo. In the studio agenda Prof. Verebes wrote:This studio assumes all design constructs to be deeply connected, integrated and inseparable from the time-varying performance of environmental sys-tems. This studio will focus on the complexity inher-ent in dynamic urban and climatic systems as both the basis of our design procedures, as well as the environments within which the products will be un-leashed, and the criteria by which design work will be evaluated. The studio will question the status of the categories of natural and man-made as not op-positional worlds, as nature is a linguistic and cultural construct classified by man, but rather aiming for the integration of temporal urban and environmental phe-nomenon into the product of space. In brief, this stu-dio will investigate Architectural Ecologies for an Expo proposal in StuttgartThe semester was split into four workshops:ws1 Environmental Machinic Procedures (5 weeks)ws2 Expo Analysis: Sites and Pavilions (2 weeks)ws3 Lattice Structures (3 weeks)ws4 Design Proposal for an Eco-Expo (4 weeks)

PROPOSALThe pavilion is generated by using information-based design techniques, seeking to install environmental intelligence into the design of architectural space. Dif-ferent flows, e.g. pedestrian flows, the Neckar-river, and the boats, of the existing situation are brought to-gether by the pavilion, as it also offers a connection across the river. By generating a lattice structure for different levels of speed and implementing it to the flow diagram, the pavilion emerges as a landscape of movement- or speed-zones, offering visitors a direct connection from one side to the other as well as a lounge situation and refreshment at the bar or at one of the transformable water-interactions.

  • HOW TO CUT A CARAVAN...TEMPORARY PLATFORM OF THE ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS IN STUTTGART

BACKGROUNDEvery year in December the traditional platform of the Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart - Department of Architecture takes place somewhere around the Kunstmuseum. The platform is co-hosted by the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart and the cooperating o.T. Bar. In 2008 two caravans parked outside of the museum for four weeks, not only showing the citizens of Stut-tgart How to cut a caravan... but also

How to play it save (poker evening)How to be a movie star (short film evening)How to be a bon vivant (wine tasting event)How to be the puppet master (puppet theater)How to play the music (experimental sounds)How to be on stage (improvisation theater)

How to draw attention (drawings of the audience)

The mobile-architectonic Intervention was conceptu-alized, planed, build and organized in four weeks by 17 students from the Academy of Fine Arts in Stut-tgart and supervised by assistant Martin Naumann and assistant Peter Weigand.

PROPOSALThe German word Schnittstelle is an ambiguous term as it can both mean interface and cut surface / edge. Wanting to put the emphasis on converging matters, the term Schnittstelle becomes our con-cept, both for the interaction as such, as well for the modification of the caravans. By using an imagined cutting plane, the two caravans are modified into a micro exhibition space, sitting area and a micro stage. By taking the caravans to the center of the city, they become the interface between the Academy and the citizens of Stuttgart.

In the following four weeks the caravans became very popular among the citizens of Stuttgart and we received a lot of attention, praise and curious questions about the Aka (the Academy) and its depart-ments. Altogether the project was great fun and quite successful.

  • INTERFACE FLORSTUDENT COMPETITION

BACKGROUNDInterface Flor was a student competition in 2008 in which my colleague Alexander Merkel and I took part in and won the 2nd price. The proposal was also pub-lished in the April issue of Wettbewerbe Aktuell.

The suggestion we sent in was based on an earlier study we worked on at a workshop called Maya - Fluid Surfaces which was supervised by Prof. Tobias Wallisser, his assistant Martin Schroth and the visiting lecturer Grischa Fischer. The workshop took place in the winter semester 2007/08 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart. The subject of the workshop was to generate forms by setting up a dynamic system in Maya (software by Autodesk).

PROPOSALAt the workshop we used a tool called n-cloth to simu-late hanging models. By varying the position of the fixing points and the perforation pattern of the cloth we generated different spatial elements.

As Interface Flor produces carpet tiles we suggested to use their carpet material to make different hanging models for their stand at a trade fair. This would bring the material closer to the customer, use the material in a unconventional way and place the emphasis on the interface of Interface Flor as it can be seen as an interface between the horizontal and the vertical.
