design concept:

taking the mobility of the project into consideration, the concept for the mobile museum is very simple. quick assembly and deconstruction dictate the design of the museum. circulation divides the building into three segments: the cafe, gallery/exhibition, service space. pods are inserted into the “larger” space to service programs such as the restroom and offices. the ribbed-like frame allows for the museum to be open throughout the building allowing maximal views for the visitors.

design issues:

1. temporary site conditions: landscape, parking2. relationship between metro and museum3. public entry and circulation through museum4. cafe/exterior seating relationship5. relationship between pods and interior ceiling6. exterior/interior facade material selection7. natural lighting for gallery spaces8. multiple entry points for different services9. artificial lighting for exterior facade10. ballard designs within landscape11. iconic expression of building from exterior12. mechanical design for three service spaces13. mechanical design for selective vitrines14. sequence of building assembly15. sequence of floor systems16. drainage design for flooding17. relationship of building to the site18. modular design versus site adaptability19. indoor/outdoor spatial design20. slope form dependent on site location

design resolution: 1. position the building to the far left, allowing for maximum open lawnn for outdoor exhibitions. having the minimal required parking to the far left allows on coming traffic from main street as well as the metro to see the museum in its entirety.

2. entry and exits run only east to west, to keep within the form of the modules as well as maintaining the idea of open gallery space with as little partitions interferring the space.

3. programs run north to south, whereas circulation runs east to west, keeping the design as minimal and simple as possible.

4. exterior and interior cladding was resolved by sandwiching two sheets of polycarbonate with insulation in between. this design allows for natural light to be diffused through three levels minimizing the amount of sunlight that enters the gallery space, allowing artificial light to control the visiblity of the art displayed.

5. floor is raised to allow for the mechanical ducts run underneath supplying air for all three areas as well as individually for the vitriines located in the gallery space. each of the three spaces have their own mechanical room allowing for individual control.

6. structurally, the museum is built in multiple sequences, that allow for quick assembly as well as fast deconstruction, allowing the multiple parts to transported efficiently through trailer trucks from site to site all around the country.

historical tradition and global awareness:

The Pompidou Centre is a cultural institution in Paris that focuses on modern and comtemporary art, varying from theatre to music to cinema or literature. Designed by Renzo Piano, the Pompidou Centre opened in 197, hand as since had a fundamental mission of cultural decentralization with an active organization of exhibitions and contacts outside of the main institution in Paris. The Centre Pompidou-Metz was created as an extension of the Centre Pompidou, becoming the first large national cultural institution to be decentralized.

The Centre Pompidou Mobile is to give new force to the Centre’s origninal purpose. The driving force behind designing the Centre Pompidou Mobile was to make the Museum more accessible to new audiences. The free exhibit is was devised to integrate the everyday people with the masterpieces of one of the two largest collections in the world. The programs were divided according to the level of privacy. The main exhibition and gallery spaces separate the cafe from the service and office space for the workers. The public is to make their way through the exhibition and have the option of leaving or continue their experience on the lawn where other expositions take place, such as live theatrical performances, or silent films. The building is constructed and deconstructed onsite every 3 or 4 months, before it moves to another location. Its use of polycarbonate sheets as the exterior facade allows for natural sunlight to be diffused as it enters the building for a softer feel, as well as create a majestic glow from afar through interior track lighting. The foreign ambience of the building will provide a unique cultural experience for the community.

the mission of the clyfford still museum is to advance the understanding and appreciation of clyfford still’s art and legacy through the presentation, research, interpretation, preservation, and stewardship of its unique collections.

the clyfford still museum is the newest addition to denver’s burgeoning cultural arts district and is located adjacent to the denver art museum in the city’s civic center cultural complex. the two story, 28,500 square foot building was designed by brad cloepfil of allied works architecture specifically to display still’s work. the museum broke ground in december 2009. upon its completion in november 2011, the museum will allow visitors to experience and understand the legacy of clyfford still, an artist whose life has been shrouded in mystery and the bulk of whose work has been hidden from the public view for over 30 years.

Concepts such as rhythm, light, materiality and geometry, inspired the project. The physical is given by the geometry and material, while light and rhythm give us their perceptual variability. Parameters that from our point of view of the fact seek timelessness built.

The project, in its relationship with the environment, is to allow the existing fleet has a visual continuity, establishing a physical connection east-west. Transversely to him and stood open geometry structure of the indoor track, which as a filter on the park and high horizontal line of support, seeks to minimize vertical presence and support the existing volume of the pediment.

The large deck looking at the strength geometric way to build your new landscape. Its shape evokes a large pergola inserted in the public, linear gates formed by six straight guideline intended to filter the linearity of the park and create a new horizon that settles the vertical component emanating from the volumetric presence of the existing building covered pediment.

As a second element of the project would look at the surrounding urbanization which, although intended as a continuation of the previously built green area, we understand that the inclusion of this new volume generates physical stresses on the surface that supports two levels: The horizontal turns pedestrian in a sinuous line and the vertical plane, with the formalization of a new topography "artificial" in the formaliza-tion of the green areas. The material, wood covered with a "veil" or copper pigment, aims to establish a dialogue with the light and the passage of time. Witness and part of it.

based on the minimal square footage of the program, the museum can easily be built as a one story building located anywhere on the site. it is also recommended that the building be one story due to the restraints of designing a mobile museum that needs to be constructed and deconstructed in a short amount of time.

volume analysis:

taking a different approach to the project, most of the programs are open and free throughout the building, with only the necessitys placed into pods that sit within the frame of the building. the idea mimics the function of a vitrine but on a much larger scale. the building is virtually a vitrine with the pods acting as the works of art within the open space.

sectional relationships:

in this longitudinal section, the 11 bays are visible, and are broken up according to the program. with the three phases set in place, each phase is separated by a void that serves as circulation through and around the building.

in this cross section. the pods are visible as they sit on the 4 foot raised floor system. the pods symbolizez the artifacts that go within a virtrine. the structural frame that is enveloped in a transparent material represents the glass of a display case.

construction process

the mobile museum is a traveling museum that takes place in different cities roughly three to four times a year. because traveling is such a difficult and time consuming process, the museum must be designed to be assembled and disassembled quickly and efficiently so that they can be delivered from location to location in a efficient timel manner.

phase I : foundation a. the existing parking lot is purely asphalt that can be releveled to create an even field for the museum b. if the site permits, creating footings for each of the points the building reaches the ground may be necessary, if not, they may rest on an adjustable steel plate that allows for an even surface

phase II: structure a. the frame of the structure is a flitch beam, made up of two layers of lumber sandwiching a steel plate for rigidity. the frame is pre fabricated into four pieces allowing for the parts to be loaded into trucks when delivered b. spanning the distance of the structure of 96’ on center, will be a vierendeel truss, allowing for mechanical ducts to run smoother through the floor system

phase III: floor system a. after the truss has been installed, joists will run 3 feet on center between the trusses allow-ing for ample room for ducts b. the hvac system will run through the floors with two air handlers outside of the building, there will be 3 separate mechanical rooms running for each of the three services c. once the ducts are put in place, the 6’x6’ pre-fabricated floor panels will be installed througout the museum

phase IV: glazing a. the beams/joist are set in between each of the structural frames creating lateral support

b. double pane polycarbonate sheets are pre-fabricated in 4’ and 6’ modules to enclose the building. c. a downspout has already been installed into the structural frame on the lower end for drain-age, but the gutter system will the be installed to collect rainwater to drain out of the building

construction process

phase V: interior a. pre-fabricated modules are inserted into the open space that allow for specific programs such as restrooms and mechanical rooms. they can be placed anywhere, as the floor panels are flexible enough to run ducts throughout the space b. vitrienes are to be installed in the exhibition space, and are specifically climatized according to the piece of art

c. temporary wall partitions are brought into the space to hang works of art d. tracklighting is also pre-installed into the bottom side of the structural frames that allow for quality control of artificial lighting for the exhibitioni as well as the staff spaces and cafe

phase VI: enclosure a. the gallery will be enclosed on both ends with double pane glass that may or may not be insulated according to preference b. the staff spaces will also be enclosed on both ends with double pane glass that allows for visibility through out the space c. the cafe will not be enclosed allowing for the space to be covered above but allow for natural ventilation throughout the space and more interaction with the exterior space

phase VII: landscape a. depending on the choice of site, their may be a lawn available for exterior exhibitions, if not, atificial turf or grass may be installed temporarily on the exterior portion of the museum b. as a way of sinage, ballards are installed that line up with the entrance and exits of the building to show a continuation of circulation

methods

1. orientation of building

the orientation of the building can help minimize the amount of sunlight that comes into the building as well as provide more shading to a particular area of the exterior seating. the program is adaptable to the space allowing for different varia-

2. slope of the building

the minimal slope of 1/2” to 12’ was selected to create a simplistic but elegant form. the slope also allows for water collec-tion from rainy days that may be stored for future use on existing landscape. the slope also allows sunlight to be reflected off indirectly

3. type of glazing

the cladding of the building is made up of three layers, the interior layer is a polycar-bonate sheet, the insulation is layered inbe-tween and the exterior layer is another poly-carbonate sheet. the three layers provide maximum insulation as well as diffusing the natural sunlight from disrupting the exhibition space

4. hvac system there are three separate mechanical rooms feeding each of the three spaces. because each space requires a different type of temperature, each one is climatized individually. two air handlers are also located on the exterior of the building, preventing interference of sound or space

project summary

CENTRE POMPIDOU MOBILE

The public is to make their way through the exhibition and have the option of leaving or continue their experience on the lawn where other expositions take place, such as live theatrical perfor-mances, or silent films. The foreign ambience of the building will provide a unique cultural experience for the community.

project summary

CENTRE POMPIDOU MOBILE

The public is to make their way through the exhibition and have the option of leaving or continue their experience on the lawn where other expositions take place, such as live theatrical perfor-mances, or silent films.
