    INDUSTRY PROFILE

    Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG)

The India FMCG sector is the fourth largest sector in the economy with an estimated size

of Rs. 1,300 million. The sectors has shown an average annual growth of about 11% per annum

over last decade. Unlike the developed market, which is prominently dominated by few large

players, Indias FMCG market is highly fragmented and considerable part the market comprises

of unorganized players selling unbranded and unpackaged product. There are approximately 12-

13 million retail sectors in India, out of which 9 million are FMCG Kirana Stores.

Indian FMCG Sectors significant characteristics can be listed as strong MNC presence,

well established distribution network, intense competition between the organized and

unorganized players and low operational cost. Easy availability of important raw materials,

cheaper labour cost and presence across the entire value chain gives India a competitive

    advantage.

Products which have a swift turnover and relatively low cost are known as fast moving

consumer goods. FMCG items are those which generally get replaced within a year. Examples

of FMCG commonly include wide range of repeatedly purchased consumer product such as

toiletries, soap, cosmetics, oral care products, shaving product and detergents, as well as other

non-durable such as glassware, bulbs, batteries, paper product, and plastic goods. FMCG may

also include pharmaceuticals, consumer electronic packaged food products, etc

    HISTORY OF FMCG IN INDIA

In India, companies like ITC, HLL, Colgate, and Nestle have been a dominant force in

the FMCG sector well supported by relatively less competition and high entry barriers (Import

duty was high). These companies swere, therefore able to change premium for there products.

In this context, the margins were also on the higher side. With the gradual opening up the

economy over the last decade, FMCG companies have been forced to fight for market share. In

the process, margins have been compromised, more so in the last six year (FMCG sector

    witnessed decline in demand)

    CURRENT SITUATION

The growth potential for FMCG companies looks promising over the long term horizon,

aspercapital consumption of almost all product in the country is amongst the lowest in the

world. As per the consumer survey by KSA-Technopark, of the total consumption expenditure,

almost 40% and 8% was accounted by groceries and personal care product respectively rapid

urbanization, increased literacy and rising per capital income are the key growth drives for the

sector. Around 45% of the population in India is below 20 years of age and the proportion of the

young population in India is below 20 years of age and the proportion of the young population is

expected to increase in the next five years.

Aspiration levels in this age group have been fuelled by greater media exposure,

unleashing a latest demand with more money and new minds. IN this backdrop, industry

estimates suggest that the industry could triple in value by 2015 (by some estimates, the industry

    could double in by 2010)

In our view, testing time for the FMCG sector are over and driving rural penetration willbe the key going forward. Due to infrastructure constraints (this influences the cost-effectiveness

of the supply chain), companies were unable to grow faster. Although companies like HLL and

ITC have dedicated initiatives targeted at the rural market, these are still at a relatively stage.

The bottlenecks of the conventional distribution system are likely to be removed once

organized retailing grows in scale. Currently organized relating accounts for just 3% of total

return scale and is likely to touch 10% over the next 3-5 years. In our view, organized retailing

result is discounted prices, forced buying by offering many choices and also open up new

avenue for growth for the FMCG sector. Given the aggressive expansion of plans of players like

plantation, trend, shoppers, stop and Shoprite, we are confident that the FMCG sector has a

    bright future.

    THE FUTURE OF FAST MOVING

    CONSUMER GOODS

Fast moving consumer goods will become Rs. 4,00,000 crores industry by 2020. A book

and company study finds out the trends that will shape its future.

The report estimate the FMCG sector witnessed robust year on year growth of

approximately 11 percentage in the last decade almost tripling in size from Rs. 47000 crore in

2000-01 to Rs. 130,000 crore now (it accounts for 2.2 percent of the countrys GDP) growth waseven faster in the past five years almost 17 percent annually since 2005. It identifies robust

GDP growth, opening up of rural market, increased income in rural areas, growing urbanization

along with evolving consumer lifestyle and buying behavior as the key drivers of this growth.

The report further estimate the FMCG industry will grow at least 12 percent annually to

become Rs. 4,00,000 crore in size by 2020. Additionally, if some of the factors play out

favorably, say, GDP grows a little faster; the government removes bottlenecks such as the

Goods and Service Tax (GST), infrastructure investment pickup, there is more efficient

spending on government subsidy and so on, growth can be significantly higher. It could be as

high as 17 percent, leading to an overall industry size of Rs. 620,000 crore by 2020.
