This is a story that is not part of today’s American History curriculum. It is a story of pride and accomplishment that has been kept hidden away for centuries.

Veteran stage/film/tv actor - Jason Allen Carvell serves as host/narrator of “America’s Untold

Journey .” !

Jason’s credits include - The Blacklist, Mysteries of Laura, Person of Interest, Nurse Jackie and this fall the new NBC drama - “BlindSpot.”

!He has also appeared in numerous theatrical

productions and television shows in the United Kingdom for

the BBC.

!“America’s Untold Journey” chronicles the 450 year

arc of continuous African American history beginning in 1565 in Spanish Florida and continuing to the present day. The story reveals startling untold facts about the importance of African-American involvement in the creation of our country and the role they and their ancestors played in our history and ultimately the passing of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

From the founding of the first integrated settlement The first school where black children were taught to read and write. The creation of the Underground Railroad The first middle class black neighborhood where white and blacks lived side by side and businesses prospered.

!! In 1964 at the Monson Motor Lodge an event so horrific and shocking would take place before the world press. This act on wonton hate would reach all the way to the White House. Two weeks later, it would prove to be the catalyst that would get the stalled Civil Rights Act passed by the U.S. Congress. !!!

New Historical Facts!In 1565 a contingent of 800 explorers land in the new world; 400 of which

were Free Black soldiers, sailors, farmers and translators. !

They would establish Fort Mose in the land called La Florida. La Florida stretched from the Keys to the Chesapeake Bay to the Mississippi River.

!Fort Mose was the first documented multi-national, multi-ethnic and

multi-racial settlement. !

In 1594 the first documented inter-racial marriage occurs at Fort Mose. !

In 1606 the first Free Black child is baptized at Fort Mose. !

The Spanish crown creates the Edit of 1693 and offers sanctuary to runaway slaves who can reach Fort Mose.

New Historical Facts!

In 1740 the first recorded defeat of the British army occurs in the new world it is led by a contingent of Spanish soldiers, Black Mose Militia

and Native Americans at Fort Mose. !

In 1867 the Sisters of St. Joseph create the first Black school to teach freed slaves to read and write.

!1n 1906 the black residents of Lincolnville form a funeral procession for

one of the original Sisters of St. Joseph in the pre-dominantly white section of the city and escort the casket to the cemetery.

!In 1950 Otis Mason is denied admission to the University of Florida because he is Black. He would become the first Black Superintendent of

Schools in St. John’s County Florida.

In 1962 Robert Hayling, a World War II veteran and the President of the Florida Association of Dentists is denied admission to his associations’

conference because he is black. !

Two years later, he would play a pivotal role in the horrific events that would occurred before the world press. Events that will lead to the

passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. !
