Current Workbench Setup
Project Background
Problem DescriptionHigh volume unitUndergoes preliminary testing
process– Semi-automated through CalTrak® – Technician still required
Project Mission
Mission StatementInvestigate viable methodologies and approaches to automate the“as received data” calibration process for the Fluke 80Series multimeters.
Project Description Build a working prototype to
– Automate the reading process– Toggle the push buttons– Switch between test leads– Rotate the VOM rotary switch
Final Assembly
Driving Components– Camera placement
– Solenoid actuator stroke length
12” x 12”x ½” 6061 Aluminum base plate
¼” Plexiglas case– Encloses components
– Multimeter placement and constraint
Rotate the VOM rotary switch
Hurst Series ABS Geared Stepping Motor
Rated Torque 132.6 oz-in Step angle 0.1 Custom made rotary dial
fixture
Polypropylene plastic construction– Easily machine-able– Non-conductive
3 banana plugs– mA, COM, and VΩ
Banana Plug Assembly
Independent Amp Terminal– Mini polypropylene block
– Utilizes a sliding rail bearing
– Provides insertion / extraction
Finished Banana Plug Assembly
Banana Plug Assembly
Solenoid Fixture
3 solenoids used to depress multimeter buttons, allowing for automation of calibration and mode selection.
70155K12 push style continuous duty linear solenoids from McMaster-Carr selected for application.
Design of Bracket
Design had to account for ideal striking distance of solenoids themselves, button arrangement, size constraints.
Mounting had to accommodate clear LOS for camera, while remaining adaptable to location of stepper motor assembly.
System Control
PIC18F8720 Microcontroller
-Dual UARTS
-52 I/O’s (14 used)
Control Programming
-CalTrak Command Strings
-“conf,XXXX
-“flt,ave,#times,%tol”
-“read,value”
Camera Captures the image On-Board processing
Image Analysis Breaks image into pixel arrays Calculates average color
Display Analysis
Driver Circuits
Stepper Motor Driver Circuit
-UCN5804 Chip
-4 I/O’s used per chip
-1.25Amp continuous output
Linear Actuator / Relay Driver
-N-Channel MOSFET
-1 I/O used per driver
Finished Assembly
