  • Compressed air quality

    ensures good quality food!

    The quick and clean way

    for safe food production:

    Service unit combinations

    ex stock, consisting of

    MS-series modules

    Systematically modular: MS series

  • Systematically more modular

    the MS-series

    Consistent modularity and a

    winning design put the MS-series

in a class of its own. Combined

    with a wealth of functionalities

and air qualities, the only thing

for you to define is the desired

    compressed air quality.

    However, Festo offers far more

    than just quality components.

    Festo means all-round support

    with Industrial Services.

For example, for all those users

    who cannot find a suitable

    combination here because their

    requirements are too specific:

    the configurator in our electronic

    catalogue:

    http://www.festo.com/catalogue

    Different systems require

    different compressed air

    qualities and flow rates.

    Special functions and a design-

    optimised environment are the

    ideal application area for the

    MS-series. Flow values of 700

    to 5100 l/min meet virtually

    any challenge.

  • Dirt and rust particles:

Solid particles occur in the form

of dust (carbon, rust particles )

    and are present at build-up

    points. Coastal areas are

    generally less dusty, but instead

are subject to salt particles from

    evaporated sea water droplets.

Dust is divided into the following

    categories:

    Coarse dust (> 10 m),

    fine dust (1 10 m)

    and superfine dust (< 1 m).

    Oil contamination:

    Even if oil-free compressors are

used, oil particles are drawn in

from the ambient air. Since this

    oil is generally not specifically

    intended for the lubrication of

    pneumatic components, there

is a risk of damage to delicate

components and in a worst case

    scenario the contamination of

    food.

    Air humidity and condensation:

    The maximum water absorption

    capacity of air greatly depends

    on temperature, irrespective of

    pressure. The volume of air

absorbed is specified in g per m3.

    With increasing temperature,

    the quantity of water absorbed

    increases. Conversely, large

    quantities of water are released

    if the temperature cools down.

    This leads to corrosion and

    damage in the compressed air

    system and on the components

    connected. The use of compres-

    sed air dryers eliminates such

    problems from the outset. In

addition to this, the use of a

    compressed air dryer is recom-

    mended for the processing of

    dried food.

Air is not always as clean as it

    appears to be! Particularly when

used in the food and packaging

    industry, a further important

    point needs to be considered

since, as part of an HACCP audit,

    compressed air also comes under

    the scrutinity of the certificating

    authority!

Why the need for compressed air preparation?

  • The following applications have

    particularly high requirements

    regarding compressed air in the

    food and packaging industry:

    Non dried foods

    Compressed air comes into

    direct contact with non dried

    foods (e.g. drinks, meat,

    vegetables etc.)

    Compressed air is used for

    transporting, mixing or for the

    production of food in general

and is therefore in direct contact

    with food.

    Compressed air quality is

    generally categorised into the

    following quality classes in

    accordance with DIN ISO 8573-1:

    1. Quality class of solid

    contamination

    2. Quality class for water content

    3. Quality class for overall

    oil content

    Packaging machines

    Compressed air comes into

    direct contact with packaging

    materials which are subsequently

    filled with food. The packaging

    material therefore becomes part

    of the food zone.

    For both instances the following

    classification applies for

    compressed air quality in

    accordance with DIN ISO 8573-1:

    Dust: Class 1

    Water: Class 4

    Oil: Class 1

Compressed air qualities to DIN ISO 8573-1:

    specified specified

This recommendation applies to all air compressors, regardless of com-

    pression method or mechanical design.

A simple rule of thumb applies

    for the definition of compressed

air quality in the food and packa-

    ging industry:

    The compressed air must

be so clean as to damage neither

the product or in the worst case

    scenario, the consumer.

Compressed air qualities in the food

    and packaging industry

  • If compressed air quality 1.2.1

    is required, we recommend the

    use of compressed air quality

1.4.1 generated with the aid of

    one of the combinations of

    devices described here, using

    the Festo adsorption dryer

type LDF for drying. The dryer

    should be interconnected down-

stream of the filter regulator LFR

    or branching module FRM and

    upstream of the microfilters.

    A typical service unit combi-

    nation for the processing of

    non dried foodstuffs:

    LFR: Filter regulating valve

    FRM: Branching module

    compressed air

    LFM: Microfilter (fine filter)

    1 m grade of filtration

    LFM: Microfilter (finest filter)

    0.01 m grade of filtration

    Classification in accordance

    with ISO 8573-1:

    Dust: Class 1

    Water: Class 4

    Oil: Class 1

Examples of predefined service units ex stock

    Maximum possible safety

    Compliance with the compressed

    air qualities listed here is

    imperative in order to ensure

    the maximum possible safety of

food and to protect the health of

the consumer true to the motto

    of food producers: Protecting

    the brand!

    Dried foods

    Compressed air comes into direct

    contact with dried foods

Compressed air is used for the

    transporting, mixing or for the

    production of food in general

    and therefore comes into direct

    contact with foodstuffs. However,

in this case even more stringent

    requirements apply since air

    humidity plays a major role!

    For such applications the

    following classifications in

    accordance with DIN ISO 8573-1

    should be considered:

    Dust: Class 1

    Water: Class 2

    Oil: Class 1
