Progressive Pilgrims

Dear Pilgrims,

We are coming into the beautiful Season of Lent and Easter. Tradi-tionally this was a time in the life of the church when people who were being drawn to the Christian community would spend the weeks of Lent with a focused introduction and invitation into the life of the faith community. The stunningly beautiful and meaningful service of the Great Vigil of Easter, held during Saturday night and Sunday early morning hours was the time of baptism for the new members.

During the Lenten Season at Pilgrim this year, we have the op-portunity for personal study and spiritual growth in both study fellowships and worship times. Wednesday evenings will be a time for all members of our community, young and mature alike, to gather for fellowship and study. We will meet at 5:30pm to share a simple supper of soup and bread then break into classes for adults and

youth until 7:30. This is a great op-portunity to learn more about your Christian faith.

The worship service will be an invitation to step back from our busy lives to assess who we are as spiritual beings. We will have the opportunity to discover a variety of spiritual practices that will move each of us in different ways. We each have our own rhythm and way of learning and growing. We will begin by considering what fits each of our styles. There are four patterns of action that show up in our lives and our worship. If you move through the world with “things to get done,” making lists and moving with purpose and goals, your home pattern is “Thrust” energy. If you move with reserve and are perhaps careful in your placement, if you like for things to be organized and in order, if you like to find a way to do something and repeat it, your home pattern is probably “Shape.”

If you love to move from “this to that” and are interested in many things, finding yourself swaying easily to whatever rhythms present themselves, energized by interac-tion, your home pattern is probably “Swing.” If you “go with the flow,” moving in easy and fluid move-ments and can simply “be” with others without the need to interact in a direct way finding energy in meditative environments, your home pattern is probably “Hang.”

We are all different in the way we use energy to interact with the world and with the divine. Let us explore together how we can expe-rience and celebrate many worship styles as we allow ourselves to grow into our Christian faith.

joined by Donna & Leon Nelson, Diane Hepburn, and, for a while, Liam Gibbens-Egolf learned the dry-ing trade from Rick. Heather kicked me out soon thereafter.

And, oh yes, about 8:30 that eve-ning, Ann Corrin got a panic phone call, which she took in stride . . . and walked over to the Church and turned the stoves off. All became well! Much thanks to everyone.

Financial Report

All totals below are as of January 31, 2014.

1. General Fund $ 4,7652. Restricted Fund $ 10,5443. Building Fund $ 16,1864. Reserve Fund* $ 3,9345. Income, Jan. $ 13,6426. Expenses, Jan. $ 17,286*Held in general fund

January is one of the months when our expenses are high because of quarterly payments for insurance, so our expenses were much higher than our income.

There are some changes in our financial group. Cynthia Turbin has resigned as financial secretary. A very big THANK YOU to Cynthia for all of her work dur-ing the last couple of years. Bob Cross has taken on the job of Financial Secretary and Glenn Hoxie is taking Bob’s place as a finance Co-Co.

Ed Bier put on a great Swedish dinner on Sunday, February 23rd, as a fundraiser for our general fund. This was a huge gift of time, energy, and expense to our church. We owe Ed a debt of gratitude. It was a great social event for our church.

We are starting the new year in good condition financially. Keep up the good work.

the UCC ‘Seasons of the Spirit’ curriculum which coin-cide with the lexionary texts used for our worship services each week. Robb Lightfoot and Kaarin Brooke have been the February teachers. Michelle Martin-Streeby will be the March teacher.

The children and their families will be involved in the Whole Earth/Watershed Festival on April 26th.

The Swedish dinner on February 23rd was an enjoyable event and a successful fundraiser for Pilgrim Church.

Working with such wonderful people and their ideas is what made it especially fun. Alice Anderson and Elizabeth Betan-court got together and baked all the Swedish Rye bread. Linda Lack shopped for the dinnerware and plates we needed, as well as ensuring the Fellowship Room tables were set up with table-cloths. Betty Gronwoldt showed up early and made coffee. Pam & John Crowe and Alice com-pleted the setting up work. Berny Patchen and Rosemary Thomas cheerfully took in money and did the accounting. And then, when a lot needed to get done, miracles happened. Heather Hennessey did everything that was needed to be done, when it was needed. Maria Angwin jumped in and prepared the pancakes. Alice sliced loaf after loaf, then helped at the food table. Lynn and Rick Bonetti hoisted the heavy soup pots out of the kitchen and ladled out bowl after bowl. Elizabeth Betancourt served the pancakes and Heather relieved Maria so she could eat. The next thing I knew was that Joriana Gibbens-Egolf was help-ing Heather. As the eating frenzy subsided, I found the Bonetti’s doing dishes, and they were soon

Worship Co-Coordinators

March 5, Ash Wednesday, marks the beginning of Lent. Pilgrims will be observing the start of Lent in a joint service at 7:00 pm with First Chris-tian Church and the Methodists. This year the rotation takes us to the First United Methodist Church at the corner of South and East Streets in Redding.

The Rev. Dr. Ann Corrin has devel-oped a series of sermons for the six Sundays of Lent entitled “Busy?” Is it possible in our hectic lives to imagine learning ways to make room to give more? Why would we do that? A thought-provoking series outline is available. Remember to invite others to come hear, too.

Do mark your calendars now for the Maundy Thursday service. This service, one of the most moving ex-periences of the Christian year, will be held on Thursday, April 17th at Pilgrim Church at 7:40.

While you are planning ahead, note there will be an Easter sunrise service this year four hours before our tradi-tional service at 10:00 am. We look forward to gathering in our newly reclaimed space by Chewy’s pond.

Learning Co-Coordinators

The children of our church enjoyed being a part of the naming contest for the Slaughterhouse Creek resi-dent beaver. They were excited that Brady’s suggestion ‘Chewy’ was cho-sen! They are learning about beaver life-style, habitat, and how to be a good neighbor to him.Sunday School lessons focus on

you. Heather Hennessey also coor-dinates a monthly FCM Assembly workshop to work on simple crafts. Tell us your interest – and have fun!

VINTAGE COLLECTIBLES – Now is a great time to clean out your closets and donate your vin-tage collectibles to French Country Market! If you need help (hint, hint) let Michelle Martin Streeby know. Items to consider include specialty dishes, tea cups, decanters, silk scarves, silk ties, vintage bird cages, vintage cookwear and fabric. Just bring your vintage collectibles to the FCM room in the basement and leave them on the “donation table.” SOUP TIME – The FCM Assembly Group will create jars of our French Country Market Soup and we need donations of dry soup items. We need: bags of split peas, black beans, navy beans, red beans, pinto beans, black eyed peas, garbanzo beans, lima beans, lentils and barley.

This soup is among our best sellers, so please pick up a couple of bags when you are grocery shopping.

BAKERS – If you like to bake, tell Micki Forell. We will need sweet breads, cupcakes, cookies, French bread, fudge, candy and some French pastries. We will provide all the packaging - you just need to make the yummy items!

Each month, we let you know of more ways to get involved. EVERY-ONE can touch this event – even donating dried beans or gift cards count!

Merci Beaucoup!Michelle Martin Streeby

The next Vegetarian Potluck will be held at 5:00 p.m., Saturday, March 15, in the Fellowship Hall. Consider this a personal invitation to all mem-bers and friends of Pilgrim Congre-gational. Bring a vegetarian dish to share along with the recipe and your own table service. Come prepared for a delicious meal and warm fellow-ship.Call me at 357-5557 with any ques-tions.

Y’all come now!Alice

We’re starting to work on French Country Market and we hope every-one in the church can lend a hand. We’ve got something for everyone!

French Country Market will be Saturday, Oct. 4. Over the past 3 years, we’ve raised thousands of dollars, which we give to several deserving service organizations. In addition, we have replaced the toilets in the upstairs bathrooms, purchased lightweight 6 foot tables that we use weekly in the fellowship hall, fixed the range in the kitchen and replaced the refrigerator. Most of all, we have lots of fun working on a project together and we get to know each other better!

Our FCM core committee meets regularly to prepare for this year’s event. Our goals are to let everyone participate in big and small ways, to have fun with our guests, and to raise money to benefit our social concern interests and the church.

Here are some ways you can get in-volved. We hope you find something that interests you!

GARDENERS – We need 4” and 6” pots of house plants and suc-culents! We also need big and small pumpkins and gourds, plus 6” pots with French herbs (French tarragon, thyme, chives, rosemary, oregano, etc.). If you plan to help with your green thumb, please tell Jim and Mary Carr and Larry Solberg.

CRAFTERS – Val Scarisbrick has several “craft kits” and “simple sew-ing projects” in the FCM room for you to look over and see what suits

Special Request: As Lent ap-proaches, those of us on the decorat-ing committee have a special request for all of you. We want to gather special rocks that you may have col-lected while on vacation or in your own backyard or that you may have found down in our own Slaughter House Creek. Be sure your name or initials are on the bottom of your rocks. Please bring them to the bas-ket labeled “ROCKS FOR LENT”. It will be in the Narthex on Sunday mornings beginning March 2nd.

Thank you! The Decorating Committee
