Additionally, in the weeks where Basic Program teachings are held, there are also Guided Meditations offered on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9.00 am.

Meditation in the Community We also offer ongoing meditation sessions on the Sunshine Coast. Death is inevitable, so why do we pretend that death is not part of life? Death has no favourites, it does not visit only the old and the infirm. This special one-day course will look at how we can use the understanding of the certainty of death and the knowledge that we can die at any moment as a means to prepare our minds for that time. A peaceful mind, filled with compassion for others, allows us to go through this process without the intense fear, anger and other afflictive emotions that can make this

experience so traumatic.

Venerable Rigsal is currently involved in hospice work, visiting palliative care patients on a regular basis and helping those who are close to death. Join her for this one-day course as she helps us transform our minds and our view of death, so that we can be of help to ourselves and those around us.

Saturday 2nd July 9.00 am - 4.30 pm, held in the Gompa at Chenrezig Institute.

Facility fee $75.

10% discount for members and concession card holders. Accommodation and meals available separately. Meals must be booked before 10.00 am on the day of the event. All bookings can be made on our website www.chenrezig.com.au.

Venerable Lozang Rigsal studied the Buddhist Study Program at Chenrezig Institute for five years and was involved in the Cittamani Hospice since its inception in the role of counsellor. She spent a further two years at Dorje Chang in New Zealand and was Spiritual Programme Coordinator at Tara Institute in Melbourne.

Learn to Meditate with Venerable Tsondru

Meditation is a tool for learning about our mind and how we relate to the world. It is an essential component of the Buddhist path to mental wellbeing and lasting happiness because it helps to develop mindfulness, tranquility and insight. Meditation can also benefit us by helping to reduce stress and anxiety, enabling us to meet everyday challenges with a calm and positive mind.

This one-day course teaches basic Buddhist meditation techniques. You will learn about the different types of meditation, the benefits of practice, how to sit properly, and how to deal with obstacles. The weekend includes teachings, meditation sessions and time for questions and discussion.

The course doesn’t assume you are Buddhist or want to be – the practices can benefit anyone and the course is open to students from any background. If you have ever wanted to learn to meditate, this is a great opportunity!

Sunday 3rd July 9.00 am - 4.30 pm, held in the Gompa at Chenrezig Institute.

Facility fee $75.

10% discount for members and concession card holders. Accommodation and meals available separately. Meals must be booked before 10.00 am on the day of the event. All bookings can be made on our website www.chenrezig.com.au.

Venerable Tsondru is a Buddhist nun and a student of Chenrezig Institute's Masters Programme in Buddhist Studies.

Please join us in the gompa as we gather together to celebrate His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s 81st Birthday with offerings, chai and birthday cake. Last year when His Holiness was asked what he wished for on his birthday he replied:

“The same as all beings, I wish to live a happy life. We all face a lot of problems that are essentially our own creation. The real point here is with our emotions. Unless we have some knowledge of how to tackle them we’ll run into trouble.

My life is dedicated to the well-being of others. If humanity is happy, then I’ll be happy, because each of us is dependent on others.”

Wednesday 6th July. Lunch in the Big Love Café from 12.00 noon. $12.50 per person. Join us in the Gompa from 1.00 pm to make offerings, and share chai and birthday cake.

Meals must be booked before 10.00 am on the day of the event. All bookings can be made on our website www.chenrezig.com.au.

Mantras, meaning “mind protection”, are Sanskrit syllables, usually recited in conjunction with the practice of a particular meditational deity, and embody the qualities of the deity with which they are associated. They bring benefit to all who see, touch, hear or speak them.

Further, when you recite mantras with the correct motivation (the wish to benefit others), your speech becomes holy speech, capable of offering

blessings to others.

Join us in the Art Studio for the relaxed and calm experience of Mantra rolling. No experience necessary. Our Chenrezig Arts community will lead you through this inspiring practice.

Chenrezig Arts brings together the painters, builders and architects behind the Garden of Enlightenment stupas, and the many traditional Tibetan Buddhist artworks that beautify our centre. The recently completed Arts Studio is the hub of Chenrezig Arts and provides a variety of services and important functions for the centre.

Second Sunday of each month at 10.00 am - 3.00 pm in the Art Centre at Chenrezig Institute.

For extensive advice from Lama Zopa Rinpoche about the benefits of reading, writing or reciting particular mantras, or how to engage with mantras to eliminate or reduce potential or ongoing obstacles, please visit the Lama Yeshe Wisdom Archive for Lama Zopa Rinpoche’s Online Advice Book and fpmt.org for advice from Lama Zopa Rinpoche.

Karma is waiting around the corner to potentially ripen at any time and give rise to tremendous suffering in this lifetime and future lives. Through meditation and explanation, Alan will explore: the various aspects of karma how to make the most of the four powers to ensure there is little or no residue after

purification approaches to inspire us to regularly and deeply purify our minds methods to reduce further negativity Through this course you will: strengthen your daily purification daily and integrate it with reducing/stopping of

daily negativity develop greater compassion for other sentient beings who are behaving negatively This one-day course will be suitable for anyone of any level wishing to develop or enhance their purification practices.

Learning Dharma just for the sake of knowledge is of very little benefit to ourselves and others. We may have attended many Dharma teachings, yet still when someone does something to us we become angry, a sign that our Dharma knowledge has not sufficiently transformed our mind.

Using Dharma knowledge and applying it in our daily lives and practices to transform our minds is of paramount importance to affect the future

wellbeing of ourselves and other sentient beings. Alan Carter will be presenting a series of one-day workshops at Chenrezig Institute that will focus on how to enhance our daily practices by the application of our Dharma learning.

Topics Include:

Clean Up your Karma with Extensive Purification - 23rd July

Understanding Emptiness - 14th August

Guru Devotion - 18th September

The Profound Practice of the Seven Limb Prayer -2nd October

Alan Carter has been a Buddhist for 21 years and is a graduate of the Basic Program. He has taught at Karuna, Blue Mountains, Langri Tangpa, Chenrezig Institute and was resident teacher at Chandrakirti Centre in New Zealand for 2 years. He has also led two one- month group retreats at Chenrezig Institute.

When the Buddha first turned the wheel of Dharma and taught the Four Noble Truths he explained that we cycle endlessly in samsara, a world of suffering. Fortunately for us, he also revealed how to break free from this futile cycle and fully develop our mind’s potential. The Four Noble Truths are key to Buddhist philosophy. Through familiarity,

we can develop deep understanding of each truth and recognise how significant they are to our everyday lives. Each of the four truths has four aspects, all of which counteract erroneous ideas and help us to better understand reality. This weekend course will touch upon the sixteen aspects of the four truths, with a focus

on the first two.

Saturday 23 July 9.00 am - Sunday 24 July 3.30 pm held in the Gompa at Chenrezig Institute. Facility fee $150. 10% discount for members and concession card holders. Join us for a Dharma road trip with our sister centre in Brisbane. We journey to a different location each time to recite the Sutra of Golden Light. In this way, we bless the animals and other wildlife with the recitation, we bless the waterways with Kalachakra Mandala sand, and we create harmony in the environment.

Often nuns from both Langri Tangpa Centre and Chenrezig Institute join together for this practice, making it a wonderful community and sangha event! This month's venue is Storybook Farm Sacred Animal Garden. Check out an article about them here: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-12-14/storybook-farm-queensland-haven-for-disabled-animals/7025640

The address will be given at the time of booking, as they like to be discreet.

Meet us at the venue at 10.00 am and we’ll be finished by 3.00 pm, including blessing the animals. BYO picnic lunch. We’ll provide the chai tea and sutras.

All donations will go to Storybook on the day.

Bookings are essential so we can organise car-pooling. If you need help getting there, or would like to offer transport, email Jane at [email protected]

Join us for a fun social evening watching a Dharma movie in our cosy Tara Room.

These days many films explore themes of spirituality, narrate the history and evolution of Buddhism, and invite us to consider life's bigger ideas.

Through film we are invited to understand others’ perspectives and afterwards share our own. Perhaps life is not always as it appears?

Do you love reading? Our new reading circle will be drawing on popular modern books that offer Buddhist teachings in ways that might surprise you. Always thought-provoking, these books will invite stimulating discussion when we meet to share our thoughts. Join us as we examine the characters and story lines to find Dharma expressed in a new, modern and easily-accessible context. Is there wisdom

in these books that we can apply to our every day lives? Can a work of fiction help us integrate more formal Buddhist teachings? We look forward to sharing these discussions with you. Our first meeting will be at 2.00 pm on the 3rd September in the library at Chenrezig institute. The first book we will be discussing is The Dalai Lama’s Cat by David Michie, published by Hay House. You may have read it before, but we encourage you to re-read it, keeping in mind how it affects you and your understanding of the Dharma. The books will be available shortly in our own shop or, if you wish to buy independently you might visit www.booko.com.au . Hilary will also have a few copies in the library. There is no formal joining of this group, just come along and we will provide chai, good company and great discussion. I look forward to seeing you there and happy reading .

Well-being is a skill that can be learned. Just as we can use diet and exercise to improve physical health, we can also train in techniques that increase mental health and resilience. Some of these techniques have stood the test of time in ancient contemplative traditions and more recently stood the test of scientific rigour. Modern psychology and neuroscience have found some of these ancient techniques to be critical in cultivating 21st century well-being.

In this workshop, you will learn about these techniques, how to implement them and what benefits to expect from practising them. For decades Alan Wallace has pioneered the exploration of the common ground of science and contemplative traditions and teaches how to successfully harnessthe full potential of both.

Friday 19th August 10.00 am - 4.30 pm, held in the Innovation Centre at University of Sunshine Coast.

Facility fee $108. This includes your lunch. 10% discount for members and concession card holders. No further

discounts in the way of vouchers or redemptions accepted for this retreat.

Inviting Well-being: Techniques for Balance and Flourishing with Dr B. Alan Wallace

August

An unruly mind is not only the cause of our own difficulties and suffering but also an obstacle to kindness and compassion. Unwanted distractions undermine our attempts to develop the wisdom and compassion necessary to achieve our potential and benefit those around us. Shamatha practice pacifies those distractions leaving the mind calm, clear and flexible. HH the Dalai Lama has regularly said that he would like to spend more time on Shamatha (calm

abiding), and in his 2011 visit to Chenrezig Institute he encouraged us to do the same. With this in mind, we are delighted to host Alan Wallace for a full-day teaching on the development of Shamatha as a support for method and wisdom. This is a rare opportunity to hear a teacher who is in demand the world over and to be guided in an intellectual and experiential approach toward cultivating high levels of concentration.

Saturday 20th August 10.00 am to 4.30 pm, held in the Gompa, Chenrezig Institute.

Facility Fee $95. 10% discount for members and concession card holders. No further discounts in the way of

vouchers or redemptions accepted for this retreat.

Accommodation and meals available separately. Meals must be booked before 10 am on the day of the event. Please check our website for information and to make all bookings. www.chenrezig.com.au.

Dynamic lecturer, progressive scholar, and one of the most prolific writers and translators of Tibetan Buddhism in the West, B. Alan Wallace, PhD continually seeks innovative ways to integrate Buddhist contemplative practices with Western science to advance the study of the mind. Dr Wallace, a scholar and practitioner of Buddhism since 1970, has taught Buddhist theory and meditation worldwide since 1976. Having devoted fourteen years to training as a Tibetan Buddhist monk, ordained by HH the Dalai Lama, he went on to earn an undergraduate degree in physics and the philosophy of science at Amherst College and a doctorate in religious studies at Stanford. With his unique background, Alan brings deep experience and applied skills to the challenge of integrating traditional Indo-Tibetan Buddhism with the modern world.
