Understanding Programme Formats that use Multi- Camera Production By Michael Gomersall Multi-camera production uses several cameras to simultaneously film a programme or event. Here is a diagram which shows a typical set-up for a multi-cam production. Communicating Meaning to the AudienceFootball is filmed with multi cameras. The cameras can be panning, extreme long shots, long shots and medium shots (see shots for extreme long shot and medium shot) and follow the action of the game play and close-ups of players’ reactions during the game. A commentator would be describing the action engaging the audience and creating excitement.

‘Take Me Out’ is a game show that uses a lot of cameras. It also uses different shots including establishing long shots, long shots and medium shots. It also uses close-ups (but not extreme close ups) on individuals.

‘Take Me Out’ communicates meaning to the audience as you can get to know the different characters. There is a lively atmosphere of fun with the host Paddy McGuinness joking and engaging with the contestants and a good use of music and the audience and contestants clapping, cheering, laughing and calling out and having a bit of banter. As a game show the format is the same every week so the audience knows what to expect. The multi camera format gives the audience the sense of being part of the show. Here are some shots including a medium shot with 2 contestants, a long shot with the guy dancing and the girls in the background and an extreme long shot of the whole set.

How I met your Mother is an American sit-com that is filmed multi camera. A lot of iconic sit-coms like Friends, Cheers and the Big Bang Theory are filmed multi-camera. There is usually a laugh track as it is filmed in front of an audience. There are usually set locations. In HIMYM this is the pub McClarins and Ted’s apartment though they use other sets and go on location as well. Multi-camera sit coms can work well and show on-screen chemistry between characters. The audience build up a connection with the characters as it is on over 9 seasons. The show is funny and light hearted and there are in-jokes and catch phrases. Below we see the point of view shot (that is actually a single camera shot) that was used throughout the show as Ted tells the story of how I met your mother to his kids. We also see three shots from 3 different cameras in one take.

Britain’s Got Talent is a live talent show. It entertains viewers as acts show off their skills. Acts can be really good or really terrible. The acts audition in front of judges and a theatre audience. The Director has to edit live and uses establishing shots, head and shoulders shots of judges and mid shots of audience which shows their reactions to the guests as well as long and medium shots of the acts. Ant and Dec host the show and make the audience feel part by commenting directly to the audience. We also see over the shoulder shots from Ant and Dec which also gives the audience an intimate sense of

Visual Styles of different Production typesTV shows have a visual style, to make people feel as if they are actually watching the show live, and this keeps them interested as they are seeing everything. Live TV has a certain excitement as you never know what may happen and you feel part of the event.

Multi camera shows have different cameras to show the action from different angles. Most multi-camera shows are live or filmed in front of a live audience. The visual style of multi-cam gives the viewer a sense of being part of the action. There is always a camera capturing the action which can be seen from different angles. This means the viewer can see all the different aspects of the production like the reactions of audience, judges, Ant and Dec as well as the performers in ‘Britain’s Got Talent’, or all the football action of a match or the different reactions of the team of 5 in ‘How I Met Your Mother’. Multi-camera shows can show relationships between people, actions and reactions and the viewer can feel like he or she is part of that-like having a ring-side seat at an event or knowing the characters in the sit com. There are often establishing shots and long and medium shots but not so much extreme close-ups or shot reverse shots or birds eye views (unless it is an establishing shot or a sports match). These are more single camera techniques.

Multi camera shows are good because the director and editor have loads of different shots and angles to choose from and can choose the best for the editing process. They’re also really good for live events because if anything happens there will always be a camera at the action, and they can also always replay it in slow motion. Also the continuity will be really good, as all shots are filmed at once so they all fit in together.

Maintaining Viewer Interest

These TV shows keep the audience interested by having a lot of different shots and angles, so the viewer doesn’t get bored of looking at the same shot. It works very well for live events. The shots can always show what’s exciting, as the director sits at a computer with lots of screens, showing what each camera is showing, and he will pick the one that makes it look best, or where the action is, so the audience will always be looking at the action and won’t miss anything. He would also direct the cameras and action and hosts would have an earpiece to receive instructions as would other production staff. By working together the director can produce a piece that would maintain the viewers’ interest.

TV shows often communicate with the audience and makes them feel part of the programme, and the audience knows everything that is going on. Like in Mrs Browns Boys, the mammy will try and make other characters laugh and give ‘knowing’ looks to the audience, breaking the 4 th Wall.

The audience often really connect with the characters and events in sit-coms and soaps.

Constraints of studio or location environment productions and multi-camera simultaneous recordingAlthough there are a lot of advantages to multi camera, there are also disadvantages. One of the main disadvantages is cost. You will need more equipment and a bigger production team. Multi-camera is often used for popular shows and live events where big audiences are guaranteed. Programmes like Friends are commissioned by a network who would have the available equipment

and staff. Also it would take time to set up the equipment for big events like a sporting event and huge amount of resources for a major world event like the Olympic Games. Equipment needs to be transported.

There is less flexibility in types of shots. Lighting may also be compromised as it won’t be as optimised. This is because there needs to be a compromise for all different cameras and angles.

There is also less flexibility in where equipment such as lighting rigs and microphone booms as it is easier to hide these from one camera than multi-camera. This means where they are placed might not be as good as it could be.

Another disadvantage is that a lot more film or storage space is used per take in comparison e.g. using 3 cameras will take 3 times as much film or storage.

It is also important to make sure that there is some audio and visual cue like a clapper board that can be seen by all cameras so that the editing is effective otherwise the synching might look off.

Multi-cameras definitely has a place in media production.

2 Be able to plan a multi-camera production

2.1. Multi-camera production roles:Here are some of the roles of production staff needed for multi-camera productions.

Camera OperatorIn a multi-camera production there is more than one camera being used. There may be a camera operator for each camera and the director would give instructions to a specific camera for what was needed. Examples may be ‘dolly in (for a close up) or dolly out (for a wide shot) or truck left or right (to move the camera to the either side). A camera operator would need the technical skills to know how to use the camera for the desired effect and also to understand the technical jargon of what the director is asking for. Cameras can be locked so they are steady or pan and tilted (sweeping horizontally and vertically). Cameras can be on dollys so they can be wheeled about or film movement smoothly.

Robotic camera mounts (see pic) can be used for predictable programming such as studio news or interviewers and the cameras can be adjusted remotely. For more unpredictable or fast moving shows camera operators are useful. Camera operators can also be responsible for making sure the composition and angle of a shot is the same throughout. They need to be alert and respond as the director requests.

There are different types of equipment that camera operators would need to be familiar with. For example; a jib allows sweeping movements from the ground up to nine feet, a steadicam is like a hand held camera where the operator can run about but the camera is held fairly steady (see pic). Camera tracks and copters can also be used. Tracks are for more elaborate productions and allow the camera to follow the action smoothly outside by running along tracks and the copters are cameras which are in drones which can take aerial shots and be operated remotely.

In multi-cam productions the placement of the cameras is very important and there may be fixed shots (such as close-ups on each actor and a wide) or some fixed and a roaming. It is important not to double up on coverage.

Sound MixingIn a multi camera production a sound mixer or engineer is responsible for the sound recording and mixing of the sound in a production. There are different roles connected to sound mixing. The sound supervisor would work closely with the director identifying specific crew and equipment needed. Crew that might be needed are gram operators (who play in, on cue, any pre-recorded music and/or effects), sound technicians (who place personal microphones on presenters to get the best sound capture) and boom operators (who work with booms or fish poles to record sound).

During live programmes a sound mixer or engineer is responsible for mixing sound sources for immediate transmission. They would have to monitor outputs, adjust levels and quality and cue music and effects.

In multi-camera productions as well as mixing sound sources, sound engineers would need to make sure that public address systems are next to camera monitors so that studio audiences can hear the programme too.

Switcher - vision mixingA vision mixer can edit programmes live as they are being recorded. They need to have an overview and be familiar with how the programme will look as they mix different visuals from sources such as cameras, video, graphic generators and digital video effects. They use different transition methods such as cuts, mixes, wipes and frame manipulation Vision mixers work live or with multi-cam. Often there is a running order, particularly in game shows. This is usually decided by the producer. The vision mixer works closely alongside the director. A vision mixer would need to be very alert as the demands, particularly on live TV can change quickly and the vision mixer would need to be able to keep on top of this. For example in a news programme, the running order may change rapidly and the vision mixer may need to work from more than one visual source, for example adding graphics with name, location and date to relevant shots.

DirectorDirectors are responsible for the overall look and sound of a production. They need to work closely with producers and writers to realise ideas into finished programmes. They have to bring together various threads such as a clear vision, what materials are needed, managing and getting the best out of the team, working within a budget and to deadlines. Scripts have to be carefully prepared with the director, producers, script writers and editors ensuring that any technical, logistical or creative problems are ironed out. The final scripts are what the director and crew work from. Directors will liaise and work with actors, presenters and crew to make sure every-one knows what is expected. . During studio recordings or live transmissions the director will work closely with the vision mixer as well as communicating via talkback equipment to technical personnel such as camera operators, sound supervisors and floor managers to cue all movements. Directors need to be able to make decisions on the spot, taking feedback from crew, producers and what is happening.

ProducerA producer oversees a creative project from beginning to the end. They need to raise funding, research and assess ideas, control budget and pull together creative and practical talent. A producer deals with all aspects of keeping the project running smoothly so that the rest of the team can concentrate on their jobs.

LightingThere are various roles in lighting in multi-cam productions including lighting director, console operators and electricians. The lighting director needs to work with the production team to design the specific look required for each shot. Lighting plans include the positioning of lights, the type and colour of lights that need to be used. In multi-cam productions lighting needs to be consistent so may be set up like lighting a stage play. An example would be to light from above (using rigged lights to the ceiling or grid). This may take more time to set up but will balance out as you will save time when shooting.

Floor ManagementThe floor manager liaises between the production team and the crew. They ensure that the crew knows what the director expects and can give directions to cast, crew and guests to keep the production on schedule. They would also check that the floor is clear, the scenery is in place and lights are on or off as needed. The floor manager would also maintain quietness when needed, call cues and make prompts as needed. Floor managers need to have great communication skills to convey information as needed from rehearsals to the wrap,

Graphics GeneratorGraphics can be used in multi-cam productions and can be as simple as creating a back drop with a photo or as sophisticated as creating a visual backdrop. Most graphics used these days are computer generated. There are various software based systems which can use a computer as well as dedicated equipment used only for creating television graphics. The vision mixer can use these images and cut them in as needed. Graphics are used a lot, for example in weather forecasting. Other examples of simple graphics could be a banner scrolling across the page with information on it, logos or animation. These may be generated there and then in programmes like the news or may have been pre-created and maybe used every week like the logo in X Factor.

Autocue operator.The Autocue is an important aspect of live TV as a presenter can see text while staring into the camera as they deliver their lines. An angled one way mirror reflects a mirrored version of the text (see pic). This gives presenters an air of professionalism and confidence in what they are saying. Having a good Autocue operator can get the best out of the presenter. The text has to be the right size, too small and they are straining to read, too big and the words can jump out at the presenter. Practising with a crew member can help regulate flow, pace and speed before time conscious presenters or guests come in. The autocue operator works with the director and onscreen talent to get the best out of the presenter. They will be attuned to repetitions and mistakes. The autocue operator can also add directions if needed perhaps in a different colour or format. The autocue rig needs to fit in with specific cameras and will need a little time to set up so that there is enough space, height and can be used with the cameras movements.

Brainstorm

There were several different ideas that we had for the multi-cam project. The main aim that we had was a game show but there were several different ideas for the game show. One was a parody game show in which the game would be rigged, and scripted in such a way that it would create comedy without the awareness of the participant. The game show wouldn’t have been mean spirited in anyway however, as the tricks would have been harmless such as buzzers not working and wrong answers even though they were right.

The most popular idea that we had was the multi-cam game show in which 4 contestants would compete against each other in video games. We were a bit iffy about this at first as technically this might be very difficult to pull off because of the game capture, but whenever we found out that we had access to game capture technology as well as 2 consoles with multiple controllers, we felt that this project was possible.

Refining original ideas

What was unique about this project was that we were constantly coming up with ideas as to how to do things, so nothing was particularly set in stone. The only thing that we did keep to was the format which was the screenplay. A lot of what happens in the show is spontaneous because of the nature of the show, so we didn’t script for certain things to happen during the show. However, whenever we were filming, we did come up with a few ideas; for example there was a part in which 2 of the

contestants were fighting for what felt like forever, so 2 of the contestants pretended to be uninterested in what was happening.

I was the presenter of the show, so I had to inform the audience as to what was happening during the beginning of the show. During the filming of the show I kept a tally of the scores and made sure everything was working fine behind the camera.

I was involved with the setup of the cameras and tripods for the multicam show. I also helped set up the game consoles with the HDTV to ensure everything was working fine before filming.

My role in the game show was the equipment manager sound and lighting and I was starring in the game show as a competitor. The thing that I had to do in the job role was to make sure the cameras sound and light was good and that the shutter speed on the camera matches the TV settings.

The Wii u and Xbox 360 that we used for the production belonged to my brother so I was responsible for bringing in that equipment for filming. I volunteered to do the editing for the game show. This is a very time-consuming process as we shot nearly 4 and half hours worth of footage that we needed to shorten down.

We had a strong idea as to how we were going to film this game show. In the rehearsals that we did before principle photography, we had an idea of a 3 camera set up in which we would be able to cover 3 of the angles of the contestants, one being the master which shows all 4 contestants, the

other 2 shots being medium shots of 2 of the contestants on both sides. We added in an extra camera to film the gameplay after we had problems with the game capture card. We were able to

hide this camera however with the use of posters as background decoration. The only other camera we used was for the green screen, which only had two camera shots, a medium close-up of the

presenter and wide shots of the contestants introducing themselves.

Lighting

We didn’t want any dramatic lighting for the show; we wanted it to be brightly lit. The studio lights were very good for brightening up the show. One of the biggest problems was the green screen as

the green screen has to be brightly lit without any shadows as this would negatively effect the quality of effect on the green screen.

Set

Our ideas for the set were limited by how we could hide the cameras from frame. We came up with the idea of putting up 2 walls in the background and joining them with posters. This was done so

that we could hide the camera as well as the tripod which was filming the gameplay off of the screen. We also placed the master camera at a high angle so we couldn’t see that camera.

Sound

We decided to use 2 shotgun mics to record the sound in case one of the microphones was dodgy and produced poor audio. We had all 4 cameras pick up sound even though it was of poor audio.

This was because we needed to synch the audio for the multicam edit on final cut pro. Without this, the footage from the other cameras would be out of sync with the good audio camera. In terms of sound, we wanted to capture the contestants’ voices over the sounds from the game. We want to

see how the edit turns out before we add any non-diegetic sounds as well as music.

Graphics

Whenever we were brainstorming we didn’t cover the idea of what types of graphics we would use for our production. We would use graphics to inform the audience as to what the scores are and

what game is being played. We would also use transitions for cuts.

Health And Safety

In terms of health and safety the biggest threat on set was wires. There were multiple wires for equipment on the set so it was important that we ensured that no one tripped. We did this by

taping down most parts of the wire onto the floor. Since we were in a studio we had to be aware of the fire exits in case of emergency. Since we were in an internal filming location and we weren’t

doing anything too dangerous health and safety was kept at a minimum during production.

Studio Floor Plans

We did rehearsals in which we decided what would be the best layout for the production. We decided to have 4 cameras, 3 of which would be directed at the 4 contestants, 2 being close-ups and

one being the master shot (wide shot). The 4 cameras would be hidden behind 2 walls that we set up with posters put on to hide the camera and tripod that was holding it up. This camera would be

used to film the game footage. After we came across problems with the game capture card, we found out where would be the best place to up the setup based on where plugs would be for the TV

and consoles as well as what would be the best light source.

Location Plans

We only had one location for this production, the studio was the only location that we used for this production. There were no external locations. We did not document this location for a time because we were limited as to when it would be free for filming. Our crew were all well notified as to when

the studio was free for filming.

Risk Assessment

Wires: to ensure that nobody tripped over wires, we tapped the wires down on the ground to ensure this didn’t happen.

Camera Script

The production wasn’t scripted as it was capturing live action so we didn’t need a script apart from the intro. The set-up for this production was very basic and did not require many camera shots and

angles.

Task 6.This project took a lot of work. At the start when we were told we had to make a multi-cam project, me, Matthew, Connor, Ciaran and Chris sat down to have a few meetings to discuss ideas, and talk about different ideas for it. After coming up with a few plans that we decided wouldn’t work that much, I came up with the idea about the game-show, as I had all the consoles and a dazzle(a video capture card).

After we decided as a team that the game show was the idea we were going to do with, I brought in the wii u with the dazzle. We set up in college to test everything and make sure everything would work, but the dazzle was not compatible with the computers in college, so we decided to get a camera, and set up the cameras in a way that we had 3 different shots of the contestants, then one shot of the TV.

Once we had everything in our head and knew what we were doing I brought in the wii u and the games, and we set up and recorded day 1.

Day 1 went well and the next week I brought in my xbox with the games, and we recorded day 2. The same day we recorded day 2 we recorded the introductions, but whenever we went to get them off the cards they weren’t there and formatted wrong, so we had to take out the cameras again and record the introductions again.

Once we had all the footage I took on the role of editing and started the edit. As there was about 13 hours of footage it was a really big file, and the first 2 times I started editing it I tried to edit it all at once. Whenever I tried to edit it all at once it crashed and all the work that I had done was deleted.

Whenever it crashed twice I realised it must have been because it was too big, so I separated it into day 1 and day 2 so I could edit it as a smaller file, and once I did this it ran perfectly. I did a multi-cam edit on both of them, and then put them together and edited it down even more, as it was around half a hour long.

This project was hard, as there was around 13 hours of footage, and I had to edit it down to under 20 minutes, so I had to watch and cut out a lot of footage, then watch over it again and cut out more footage.

Task 7-Operational Methods

Communication within team

There was a great deal of communication between takes as it wasn't a live multi-cam show. After each round in a game we would be given information by Matthew and discuss what we should do for the next game. Even though these moments were being recorded for the show we were able to cut

them out in the multi-cam edit.

Shot calling

We had all of the cameras set up and recording from the beginning, however we decided not to hook them up to a edit desk as we did not want to cut the production on the fly. We preferred to

bring the footage into a multi-cam edit on final cut and mess around to see what the best shots to go with were.

Talk-Back

We were not using a control room with an editing desk for this production. For talk back we received feedback from Matthew who was not participating in the game show and who was giving us advice about we should and shouldn't be saying during the filming. He however was not in a control room

but instead behind the set in the studio.

Cueing

As I said before because of the nature of the show there wasn't much need for cues as all of the dialogue and actions of the participants during the show were not staged. The only time we used

cues were for the intros that we did using the green screen in which the presenter said some dialogue and the participants introduced themselves.

Vision Mixing

We did not use a vision mixer for the live recording of the show, and effects that we want to add to the final product will be done on final cut after the editor cuts a raw cut of the show.

Video and Graphics Inserts

We intend to add graphics into the cut of the show. These will include text that will provide the audience member with information about the project like what game is being played and what the

scores are.

Sound Mixing

For the production we had 2 microphones both picking up the sound of the contestants as well as the sounds of the game. We also had the cameras pick up sound in order to synch in final cut. The reason why we used 2 microphones was in case of a fault with one of the microphones which we

wouldn’t know existed until we listened to it again on a computer.

Task 8.As a group my team members and I communicated really well. We sat down every week and had a meeting about ideas and talking to each other about what we thought we should do.

We also had a group chat on Facebook, where we all talked about what days we were going to film and when I should bring in the equipment. When I had the equipment in, everyone in the team helped set up cameras and set up the equipment and the props.

Whenever all the footage was filmed and I started editing, everyone in my team was asking me how I was getting on. I asked Matthew to edit the intro, because I had already done it twice (whenever final cut crashed), and didn’t want to look at it again, so Matthew edited the intro and gave it to me and I added it into the start of my edit.

Overall I thought we communicated really well as a team, and always told each other where we were on the project and how we were getting on.

Evaluation

I think we did well in the multi-cam projects, and we worked well as a team and had good communication skills throughout both projects.

I think we had a bit too much footage for the game show, as it was around 13 hours, and it took a long time to edit it down, but it is always better to have more footage than less. I think it would have been better if we recorded off a dazzle instead of pointing a camera at the TV, as the quality wasn’t the best and you could sometimes see reflections in the TV.

I wanted the presenter Matthew to be in it more, and to guide the audience through and have more voice-overs, as I think it would have made the audience understand more, but it still turned out well for the footage that I was given to work with.

I think the Lore piece turned out good, but when we were filming the younger girls dance they were getting very shy and they were just standing about so we couldn’t use the majority of the footage that we got.

After we filmed and got all the footage on a computer we looked through it as a team, and thought we weren’t going to be able to make anything out of it as we thought we didn’t have that much footage, but for the footage that we had it turned out a good piece.
