RUTH PROVOST (SOPRANO) read Musicat Christ’s College, Cambridge, andworked actively as both a cellist and singerduring this time. After graduating, shedecided to embark upon a singing career,and is now studying with Gary Coward.

Ruth has appeared as a soloist in venuesacross the UK and Europe; engagements

so far include J.S. Bach’s Cantata JauchzetGott in allen Landen, Magnificat and StJohn Passion, Buxtehude’s Membra JesuNostri, Fauré’s Requiem, Handel’s DixitDominus, Messiah and L’Allegro, ilPenseroso ed il Moderato, Haydn’sCreation, Monteverdi’s Vespers, Mozart’sRequiem, Mass in C minor and Vesperaede Solennes de Confessore, with suchgroups as Manchester Baroque, theThames Chamber Orchestra, GuildfordPhilharmonic Chamber Orchestra,Fretwork and the Gabrieli Consort.

Alongside her solo engagements, Ruth isactive as a choral and consort singer. Shehas worked and toured with groupsincluding The Sixteen, the GabrieliConsort, The Tallis Scholars, BrittenSinfonia Voices, the English Concert, theBBC Singers and Le Concert d’Astree, andrecorded with Harry Christophers, PaulMcCreesh, Christopher Robinson, PeterPhillips, David Hill and Bob Chilcott. Futureengagements include J S Bach’s StMatthew Passion and Christmas Oratorioand Poulenc’s Gloria.

HELEN CHARLSTON (MEZZO-SOPRANO), who was hailed as ‘a ratherspecial mezzo’ by Music WebInternational, began singing as a choristerand head chorister of St Albans AbbeyGirls Choir. She then studied music atTrinity College, Cambridge where she helda choral scholarship for four years. Ayoung artist increasingly in demand in theUK and abroad, Helen is an inauguralRising Star of the Orchestra of the Age ofEnlightenment.

Recent concert highlights include Tele-mann’s Ihr Völker hört with Florilegium atthe Wigmore Hall (also broadcast on BBCRadio 3); a worldwide tour of Handel’sMessiah with Seattle Symphony, theWestern Australian Symphony Orchestraand Adelaide Symphony Orchestra; Sch-oenberg’s Lied der Waldtaube at CadoganHall; Bach’s Matthew Passion at the Tho-maskirche in Leipzig (PaulMcCreesh/Gabrieli Consort and Players)and her debut at the London Festival of

ROBERT JOHNSTON (TENOR) startedhis singing career as a treble in SalisburyCathedral Choir and went on to studysinging at The Royal Academy of Music,where he was awarded LRAMs in Singingand the Teaching of Singing, as well as aGRSM IIi honours degree in Music. Hewas awarded an ARAM by Sir DavidLumsden in 1995 for services to theprofession.Robert has been much in demand as asolo singer and consort singer sinceleaving The Royal Academy of Music. Hewas a Vicar-Choral in the choir of St Paul’sCathedral from 1989 – 1997, makingmany recordings as well as performingregularly in concerts and services. Heappeared as a member of The TallisScholars from 1990 – 1996, performing inover 300 concerts worldwide andrecording extensively on TV, Radio andCD. He has also appeared regularly withThe Monteverdi Choir, The Sixteen, The

Baroque Music, singing Storgé in Handel’sJephtha with the Academy of Ancient Mu-sic.

On the stage, Helen’s operatic roles haveincluded Olga/Eugene Onegin,  FlorencePike/Albert Herring, Ino/Semele,Sara/Tobias and the Angel  (Dove) andDinah/Trouble in Tahiti  (Bernstein). Shealso created the role of Dido in the pre-miere of a new chamber opera based onVirgil’s writings about Dido: Dido is Dead,by young composer Rhiannon Randle.This season she will sing Messagiera andProserpine in Monteverdi's Orfeo forBrighton Early Music Festival and FirstWitch (Dido and Aeneas) for La NuovaMusic at the Wigmore Hall.

Gabrielli Consort, The English Concert andfrom 1997 – 2015 was a full-time memberof the BBC Singers.

Robert has also enjoyed an establishedsolo concert career, taking him to most ofthe UK’s cathedrals and major concerthalls.

He has broadcast regularly on Classic FMand BBC Radio 3, including VaughanWilliams’ Hodie with the BBCSO. His soloCD recordings include works by Purcell,Schubert and Grainger (Brigg Fair) withJohn Eliot Gardiner on the Phillips label;Maintop in Britten’s Billy Budd with KentNegano and the Hallé on Erato; TheSecond Priest in Mozart’s The Magic Flutewith Gardiner again on Archiv; MarquisPierre in Kurt Weill’s The Firebrand ofFlorence with Sir Andrew Davis and theBBCSO on Capriccio; works by WilliamCroft with John Scott on Hyperion;

Rachmaninoff Vespers with David Hill onBBC; Noel with David Hill and The BachChoir and Robert was also a tenor soloiston the award winning CD The Crown OfThorns with Harry Christophers and TheSixteen. For television Robert’s solorecordings include filming works by CarlOrff with Donald Runnicles in Munich forThe South Bank Show, works by Purcell forEngland, My England with Gardiner and healso filmed the part of the Venetian OperaSinger in the feature film of Dorian Gray.His voice is often heard on TV and Filmsoundtracks, including the singing voice ofDaniel in BBC’s Daniel Deronda, a youngmonk in Brother Cadfael and several HarryPotter films. On a lighter note, Robert hasalso made recordings or performed livewith Elton John, Sting, Dusty Springfield,Mike Oldfield, The Opera Babes, SusanBoyle, Johnny Mathis, Il Divo and KylieMinogue!

MICHAEL R BUNDY (BASS), a musicgraduate of Trinity College, Cambridgeand the Guildhall School of Music andDrama, has performed widely in diversegenres: He has appeared as soloist withgroups such as The Sixteen, TheOrchestra of the Age of Enlightenment andhas a continuing relationship with the BBCSingers. His operatic repertoire exceedsforty roles, and he has sung with EnglishNational Opera, Kent Opera, ScottishOpera, the Royal Opera, Covent Garden,Mauritius Opera, and the Narodni Divadloin Prague: He appeared wIth TheaterBasel in Actus Tragicus (a staging of someof the cantatas by J.S. Bach, with therenowned director Herbert Wernicke) -and performed with Opera Restor’d and

the Akademie für Alte Musik, Berlin in theirproduction of Lampe’s comic opera TheDragon of Wantley at the PotsdamFestival. His Oratorio repertoire is catholic,and he has broadcast frequently for BBCRadio 3, in works as diverse as Bonnal'soratorio Poèmes Franciscains, theRequiem by Gabriel Fauré and MichaelHurd's Captain Noah and his Floating Zoo.Work with Trevor Pinnock has included thebass solos in Bach’s Saint MatthewPassion in Europe, Istanbul and Japan,and he has also appeared as soloist withSir John Eliot Gardiner in Berlioz'L’Enfance du Christ, Handel’s Israel inEgypt (both BBC promenade concerts),Bach’s B Minor Mass, Haydn’s NelsonMass and the Odes and Masques ofPurcell. He has broadcast the role ofGobryas in Handel’s oratorio Belshazzarwith Robert King and has sung Elgar’sDream of Gerontius in Guildford, Ely andRochester cathedrals, and also theSmetana Hall (Obecní Dum) in Prague; afurther performance was given in theUsher Hall, Edinburgh, as was Mahler’sEighth Symphony, also performed at theRoyal Albert Hall. Elgar's oratorios - TheKingdom and The Apostles (in which he

has sung all three bass roles) - havefeatured regularly. Bach in St. Alban's Abbeyand the Coptic Cathedral in Stevenage,Rossini's Petite Messe... in WinchesterCathedral, Vaughan-Williams FiveMystical Songs in York Minster, andBrahms' Requiem in Kings' College,Cambridge.

Other commercial solo recordings includePurcell’s The Fairy Queen, Chausson’s LeRoi Arthus, Tovey’s The Bride of Dionysus,Lydia Kakabadse's The PhantomListeners and Michael Hurd’s The Widowof Ephesus.

He is as equally at home in contemporarymusic as he is with ‘lighter’ music, havingbroadcast the roles of Olin Britt (MusicMan), Mr. Lindquist (A Little Night Music)and been a 'star singer' in the long-runningshow Friday Night is Music Night for BBCRadio 2.

Looking at Bach’s reputation andstanding as one of the greatestcomposers of all time, it is difficult to

believe that, during his lifetime, he waslittle-known and was mostly recognized forperforming on the organ. He wasimmensely skilled in many establishedmusical forms, including, for example, thecantata and fugue, and developed theminto complex and sublime pieces. Hecomposed over a thousand works inalmost every musical genre (except opera).

Bach was born (on 21 March 1685) anddied in Germany, and spent his entire lifethere, working as an organist, teacher, andcomposer. His musical activities didn’toccupy all his time, however, as he hadtwenty children, including four who becamefamous composers in their own right - CarlPhilipp Emanuel, Wilhelm Friedemann,Johann Christoph Friedrich, and JohannChristian.

Bach was the youngest of eight children.His father, Johann Ambrosius Bach, hadbeen a town musician, and probably gaveBach his early music lessons. His mother,Maria Elisabetha, and his father died withina year of each other (in 1694 and 1695,respectively). Orphaned at the age of ten,Bach moved in with an older brother,Johann Christoph, who was the organist atSt. Michael's Church, Ohrdruf, and taughtBach much about the organ.

Bach's own early career began in 1703 andinvolved playing the violin and organ inquite a lowly position in the ruling court inWeimar and in Neukirche, Arnstadt.

In October 1707, Bach married his cousinMaria Barbara Bach (not to be confusedwith the American actress who starred in aJames Bond film!); together they would

eventually have seven children (includingthe aforementioned Wilhelm Friedemannand Carl Philipp Emanuel ).

In 1708, Bach was appointed organist andchamber musician to the Duke of Saxe-Weimar and during the next nine years,composed many of his finest organcompositions, becoming well-known as afine organist. It was during this fruitfulperiod that he composed the Toccata andFugue in D Minor (1705), Cantata No. 208(1713), and The Little Organ Book (1714).

He then had a period as Kapellmeister inthe court of the music-lover Prince Leopoldof Anhalt-Cothen and, while there, hismajor works included the BrandenburgConcertos (1721), The Well-TemperedClavier (first book, 1722). In 1721,however, the Prince married a woman who

did not share the Prince's interest in music,and the Prince's support of Bach lessened.Bach would soon leave.

After the death of his wife in 1720. Bachmarried Anna Magdalena Wilcke (thedaughter of the town trumpeter) and theywould have thirteen children together(including Johann Christian ). Altogetherthen, Bach had twenty children with his twowives, although ten of them died in infancy.

In 1723 he became Kantor of St. Thomas'sin Leipzig and remained in that town for therest of his life and gave to the world someof his most sublime works, including St.John Passion (1723), St. Matthew Passion(1727), Suite No. 3 in D (1729), Magnificatin D Major (1731), Christmas Oratorio(1734), Italian Concerto (1735), GoldbergVariations (1741-1742, originally called"Aria With Diverse Variations," but laternicknamed after Bach's student JohannGottlieb Goldberg), The Well-TemperedClavier (second book, 1742), the MusicalOffering (1747), and The Art of the Fugue(unfinished, 1749).

By 1740, Bach's eyesight was failing. Twoeye operations resulted in Bach's completeblindness, operations which also damaged

his health and may well have hastened hisdeath. He died of a stroke on 28 July 1750.He is buried at St John's cemetery, Leipzig.His widow, Anna, lived for another tenyears, dying in poverty in 1760. Bach'sdeath in 1750 effectively marked the end ofthe Baroque period in music.

Bach's BackOn Bach's death, his works weresoon forgotten (but then again,they were hardly known during hislifetime and many of his workswere not published until a centuryafter his death). In March 1829(almost a hundred years afterBach's death), Mendelssohnperformed Bach's St MatthewPassion, spurring a world-wideinterest in Bach. Soon, Bach'sworks were appreciated by theworld - essentially for the first time.In a way then, we can thankMendelssohn that you are all herethis evening!
