Sata-Häme Soi Festival is known for the Golden and Silver ac-cordion competitions and the international Primus Ikaalinen Competition. However, it is a lot more. It is an international music festival arranged in Ikaalinen for the 40th time already. During the first week of July, the idyllic, beautiful Old Town of Ikaalinen transforms into a metropolis of music. The moods change from the smoky jazz club into the heated beat of the Argen-tine tango, and from the high standard international per-formances into the fantastic joint celebration performance of accordions on Saturday night. The heart of the festival is the Festival Park, where there is music from morning till night. Both amateur and professional musicians take the stage, as well the young as the old. In addition to the park and competitions, the Ikaalinen Hall, the Oma Tupa, and the Ikaalinen Church are important venues. As the new Festival Director I look forward to my first sum-mer in Ikaalinen with keen and curious mind. I will get to know a new kind of music world and festival visitors, as well as staff and volunteers who with their input make this festival a success. Welcome, you seasoned festival visitors, who faithfully make your way to Ikaalinen year after year. An especially warm wel-come to all first time visitors, who have no previous experi-ence of the atmosphere and the superb performances of the Sata-Häme Soi Festival.

Welcome! See you in Ikaalinen!

Ulla Majuri, Festival director

Lasse Pihlajamaa – Mother´s Memorial

The Grand Old Man of Finnish accordion music, Lasse Pihlajamaa (1916-2007), was for over 30 years an important musical guide at the Sata-Häme Soi Festival. Born in Jämijärvi, he returned there in the early 1970’s for the first time due to the Sata-Häme Soi Festival, after decades spent elsewhere. He designed and built an impres-sive memorial to his Mother, on the site of his birth home. It was completed in the summer of 1975. The memorial is dedicated to all mothers, heroines, who have raised their families in difficult circumstances. The memorial has been set inside a house, seeming-ly ripped apart. Inside the house the music and lyrics for his piece Memory to Mother (Muisto Äidille) are engraved to a wall. The monument depicts in a beautiful manner the rough circumstances that the Pihlajamaa family lived in during the 1920’s. Since the 1975 opening of the festival, a brief musical moment has been arranged there annually, honouring the local roots of the Sata-Häme Soi Festival. The evening continues with a folk music concert at the Jämi Arena.

Sata-HämeSoi40years

The Riku Niemi Orchestra takes the stage for the seventh time at the Sata-Häme Soi Festival. They perform the traditional, well appre-ciated and highly popular White Rose Concert. This year we enjoy the Finnish light music legend Rauno Lehtinen’s music. It was the 80th anniversary of his birth in April 2012. Maestro Riku Niemi with his Orchestra and their invited top soloists - Johanna Iivanainen, Milana Misic, Pepe Willberg and Amadeus Lundberg – fill the concert with the most beloved music pieces of the great composer.

This concert becomes another chapter in the history of Finnish mu-sic, written in Ikaalinen.

TheWhiteRoseConcert

The small town of Ikaalinen was full of people in June 1972, when the music festival was arranged for the first time. During the 40 yea-rs there have been millions of music notes, hundreds of thousands of listeners, thousands of performers and hundreds of concerts. Although there has been a great amount of international colour, and many world class performers have been heard, the local roots of the folk music have always been treasured. This can be seen and heard in the 40th anniversary concert, where the programme contains a fast forward of music from the decades. The concert’s climax will be the Ikaalinen folk musicians playing together.

MunichGrooveConnectionWe will hear what a group sounds like, when the members from Moldova, Georgia and Bulgaria combine their own home count-ries’ music styles of the classical treasure chests with their dazzling skill. Violinist Luciana Beleaeva plays with the Munich Filharmonic orchestra. Accordionist Vladislav Cojocaru plays in many different groups specialized in east European music styles. Base player Giorgi Makhoshvili has won a national jazz prize in his native Georgia. He then moved to Germany and plays in many different groups. Pianist Konstantin Kostov has graduated from the Music University of Sofia, specialized in jazz and composition, and has continued his career with great success in Munich.

The quintet’s personal sound and rhythmic energy is complete with the percussions by Nevyan Lenkov.

The Munich Groove Connection is impossible to place in any music style. They play familiar classic hits in a new style and jazz improvi-sations, with skill and dazzle.

The group received an invitation to Ikaalinen as a special prize in St Petersburg at an international Terem Crossover Competition in April 2012.

New Zealand is just about exactly on the other side of the planet earth. Still, Sata-Häme Soi and the New Zealand Accordion Asso-ciation and musicians have been in cooperation for over 10 years. Grayson Masefield, 25, from Auckland, is certainly among the top accordionists in the new generation in the whole world. He won the international Coupe Mondiale competition in 2009 in both the classical and the virtuoso entertainment music groups, and received the first prize in the Primus Ikaalinen competition. He also succeeded well in other international competitions and festivals. Grayson Masefield studies in France, tours regularly in Europe and the countries around the Pacific Ocean. He is a versatile musician, whose family have been central actors in the New Zealand accordi-on music culture.

The Concert at Oma Tupa contains a versatile mixture of the most important accordion music.

Accordions Worldwide Inc. sponsors Grayson Masefield’s concert at the Sata-Häme Soi Festival this year.

MikaVäyrynen

Mika Väyrynen (born 1967) is one of the most known classical accordion artists in the world. He has performed with most of the Finnish symphony orchestras and toured widely in Europe and Asia. His cooperation with many conductors and composers has produced many accordion music premiers. For example, Erkki-Sven Tüür’s Concerto and Aulis Sallinen’s solo work Preludes and fugues op 95 have been born from the close work between the performer and the composer. Aulis Sallinen’s orchestra piece Chamber music V – Barabbas variations has been played many times in several countries by Väyrynen.

In the Church of Ikaalinen Mika Väyrynen plays his programme, which only has music written by J.S. Bach (1685-1750). The pro-gramme includes the French suites, which were originally written for clavier (harpsichord or clavichord) in the early 1720, when Bach composed a large number of instrumental pieces at the court of Köthen. Passacaglia and Fugue is a huge piece composed for organ. Its genius has touched music listeners, and has amazed scientists for nearly 300 years. The last movement of J.S. Bach’s solo violin par-tita, the Chaconne, has inspired pianists over a hundred years, but especially Mika Väyrynen’s brilliant transcription for the accordion has shown Bach’s excellence over different instruments and over the ages.

This evening will be an unforgettable experience enjoying these masterpieces by Bach.

MariaKalaniemi&TimoAlakotila

Maria Kalaniemi became known internationally in 1983 when she entered the first Golden Accordion competition at 19 years of age. Since then, she has become one of the world’s most popular Finnish accordionists. She has made headway in the development of the so called new folk music, and changed thoughts about the accordion and the music it can play. Maria Kalaniemi has taken part in many international projects, of which, among others, the multinational Accordion Tribe has gained a lot of interest through tv-broadcasting in many countries.

Maria Kalaniemi and pianist Timo Alakotila have played in different groups and performed in several concerts around the world. They have gained many prizes and recognition for their musical pieces. The Arts Council of Finland has awarded both with a status of Artist Professor.

Last year Timo and Maria celebrated their 20 years of cooperation with concerts and by publishing a new album. Their music has be-come seamless during their years together. The combination of the accordion and the piano opens wide possibilities for varied arrange-ments. In addition to Finnish moods, Argentine tangos and sparkling French waltzes meet in this top duo’s programme.
