AART BERGWERFF is among the most renowned Dutch organists. In 2012 he was appointed Organist of the Grote Kerk in Breda. Aart has a passion for the classical repertoire, in particular for that of Johann Sebastian Bach, but he is also looking for new ways and forms in the organ culture. The latter is also the aim of the foundation Art UnOrganized, which Aart set up in 2017. As an example, Aart created, together with derwish dancer Kadir Sonuk, the performance East meets West, to the music of Canto Ostinato by Simeon ten Holt. He also cooperates with famous video artist Jaap Drupsteen, with whom early this year he presented a musical-visual programme in the Grote Kerk to the music of Bach’s Passacaglia. Aart studied organ at the Rotterdam Conservatorium, in Paris with Marie-Claire Alain and in North Germany with Harald Vogel. He concluded his study in Paris with obtaining the Prix de Virtuosité. He won prizes at international organ competitions in Bruges, Lausanne and Groningen. In 2003 he was awarded the silver medal “Arts, Sciences et Lettres” because of his merits for the French organ culture. At the Rotterdam’s Conservatorium, part of Codarts Hogeschool voor de Kunsten, Aart is a principal subject teacher of organ. As a concert organist he frequently performs at concerts and festivals at home and abroad. He is often a guest with the Rotterdam Philharmonics Orchestra and with the Philharmonic Zuid Nederland.
