INTRODUCTIONTHROUGH BILBAOESZENA – STAGE RE-SOURCES CENTRE, BILBAO CITY COUNCIL CULTURE AND EDUCATION DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCES THE CALL FOR THE FOURTH EDITION OF THE “ARTISTAS EN RESIDEN-CIA” (Artists in Residency) STAGE CREATION SUPPORT SCHEME

The companies wishing to compete for a place in the 2012 edition have until 30 MARCH to submit their proposals and BilbaoEszena will select five projects which will receive financial support of up to €5,000 and artistic and techni-cal assistance.

One of the residencies will be reserved for the

best project to be undertaken in Euskera and the use of this language will be more heavily weighted (20% instead of 10% of the score).

“Artistas en Residencia” is a scheme sponsored by the Bilbao City Council Culture and Education Department, which seeks to foster research and innovation in the field of stage arts in the city by making financial resources, facilities, technical means and artistic accompaniment available to the artists or researchers to enable them to un-dertake their creative project.

The Culture and Education Department, through Bilbao’s Stage Resource Centre, BilbaoEszena, has announced the 2012

call for participants in the “Artistas en Residen-cia” (Artists in Residency) scheme, an initiative it launched three years ago in order to foster and promote research and innovation in the field of stage arts in the City. The companies or artists who wish to take part in the current edition have until 30 March to submit their projects. BilbaoEszena will select five art projects, whose main aims are the creation, research and dissemination of stage proposals.

New for this edition, one of the residen-cies will be reserved for an arts project in which the results to be presented to the public and/or other artists are exclusively

in Euskera. Likewise by using this language, the general score will rise from 10% to 20%, in order to encourage its usage in contemporary stage arts.

The main aim of the “Artistas en Residencia” scheme is to provide support, offering resourc-es (financial, technical, training and accompani-ment, etc.), to all those arts entities or individ-ual artists who wish to undertake a creation or research process in the stage arts, particularly those more closely related to the new scenes, which have a specific interest and a multidisci-plinary nature, the main fulcrums of which are theatre and dance, without ruling out projects more related to traditional disciplines such as street theatre or the circus.

Via this scheme, organised through Bil-baoEszena, Bilbao City Council aims to foster and support those initiatives directed at stimulating artistic creation, together with enhancing those research and development processes the main vector of which is the stage, and in particular those related to new drama productions. Furthermore, there is a third objective aimed at locating and retaining creative talent, fostering access to the produc-tive development process.

PARTICIPANTS

Ahis scheme is open for the submission of projects by any group or individual artist over the age of 18 interested in

collaborating with BilbaoEszena in creation or contemporary stage research work. Par-ticipants may be of any nationality, but in ad-dition to the residency to be undertaken in Euskera, at least two of the remaining residencies will be awarded to propos-als by Basque artists.

RESIDENCY DURATION

The residency will have a maximum dura-tion of 35 days and will be undertaken intensively over this period, pursuing the

arts project submitted and selected. The resi-dencies will take place in the premises of Bil-baoEszena and other stage venues in the City, preferably during the months of July, August, September and October. The amount granted to each project will range from a minimum of €1,500 to a maximum of €5,000. Furthermore, the people selected will have the opportunity of presenting their creative processes before the general public or professionals from the sector, either as part of the next edition of the Bilbao Contemporary Theatre and Dance Festi-val (BAD) or alternatively within the framework of any other municipal stage initiative.

The detailed proposal for the residency project submitted in application for the financial aid, should be no longer than 15 sheets, and it will explain the artistic details, the costs of the pro-ject, a description of the process, the purpose of the residency and its artistic content. This document can be sent in Euskera or Castilian Spanish, and if sent in another language, it should include a summary of each of the sec-tions in one of the Basque Country’s two of-ficial languages.

DETAILS OF THE 2011 EDITION

In total, in the last edition the Culture and Education Department received 80 entries, a figure that almost doubles that of the previ-

ous year (44). Of all of these, the committee charged with selecting the winning proposals with the advice of outside experts, opted for those submitted by the group led by the young artist from Sopelana, Sara Paniagua, toge-ther with Estela Lloves, Mónica Valen-ciano and Raquel Sánchez to undertake their project entitled “Canción Laverinto”; the project by Estibaliz Olabarria, “Play stands still”; the proposal “I’m so excited” by the ar-tists Roberto Martínez and Alberto Eche-varrieta, from La Rioja and Bilbao, respective-ly; “About Ana” by the Madrid-based artists Lisa Parra and Silvia Zayas; and lastly, the “Mu-to” project headed by the dancer from Navarre Laida Azkona.

When selecting these projects, the panel took into account their multidisciplinary nature and their innovative approach to the research and development of new stage environments as well as their artistic interest.
