Help get this festival started! Join us to officially open the 2017 TMAG Children’s Festival. There will be live music and every child has a chance to win the lucky door prize.

This year the festival will explore all things ANIMAL. For five days TMAG turns itself over to you, our younger visitors, with a range of special events, displays, programs and activities for and by children. Make animal puppets with Trash Puppets, our Festival Artists in Residence, come party at the Kids’ Disco, meet people who work with animals every day, and much more.
All festival activities and events are free!

Animal StampedeTake the festival to the streets! Help fill the footpath with chalk animals.Location: Dunn Place Footpath Wednesday – Sunday 10:00 am – 4:00 pm
Print Ecology Art StationExplore the relationships humans and animals have with different types of plants. Using printing, drawing and collage, contribute to a collaborative artwork with artist Sara Wright.

Daily LEGO ChallengeAttempt a different building challenge each day and see what animals you can create.

Meet Katie Boon and Jhess Knight from Trash Puppets (VIC), our Festival Artists in Residence. They empower people of all ages to be creative using recycled and reusable materials.
Drop in to the Puppet Studio and take inspiration from recycled materials to create your own trash puppet, write or draw your puppet’s story for The Trashy Tales of an Elusive Tail storybook, track the Tasmanian Devil puppet through the exhibits, and enjoy a performance by young workshop participants.

Backyard Wildlife Surveillance – Camera Trap TricksJoin the crew from Hobart Hackerspace to learn how to make and set up a camera trap to capture wild animals on film.
Children must be accompanied by an adult for this workshop.

Creative CreaturesLearn to draw creatures great and small! These cartooning tips and tricks will give you all the tools you need to draw cartoon animals – from the real to the imaginary.

Puppet Performance Workshop with Trash Puppets Puppet making, story writing and performance
workshop suitable for budding puppeteers aged 8 – 12. Workshop participants will perform with their puppets the following day at the Festival Finale.Children do not need to be accompanied by an

Winnie-the-Pooh and friendsGet an insight into the creation of one of the world’s most loved children’s characters. A selection of original drawings by British artist Ernest Howard Shepard (1879-1976), including preliminary illustrations for the children’s classics Winnie-the-Pooh and Wind in the Willows.
