World Congress on Thyroid Cancer2
Welcome Letter from Steering Committee
Dear Colleagues and Guests:
On behalf of the entire Steering Committee, it gives us great pleasure
to welcome you to Boston and to the Third World Congress on Thyroid Cancer.
With registration approaching 1200 Professionals, WCTC-3 is the largest meeting in the World
dedicated to Thyroid Nodules and Thyroid Cancer. And with participation from 72 countries and almost
every continent, WCTC-3 is the most diverse and most broadly representative such meeting ever held.
Uniquely, WCTC at its core is a multidisciplinary international Congress engaging equally Attendees
with a broad range of backgrounds, education, specialty affiliation, and expertise, including Surgeons,
Endocrinologists, Medical and Radiation Oncologists, Pathologists, Radiologists, Physician Assistants
and Nurse Practitioners, Geneticists, Scientists and Nuclear Medicine specialists. WCTC-3 is endorsed
by more 60 national and international professional societies and patient advocacy groups including
the American Head and Neck Society Endocrine Section, the International Association of Endocrine
Surgery, the American Thyroid Association, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists and
ThyCa to name a few. WCTC-3 offers unique opportunities for networking and learning from the
experience of colleagues the world over.
Our Keynote Speakers are world-renowned experts in their field. Our Panel Moderators and Panelists
represent the best and brightest multidisciplinary faculty in the world. Our Instructional Course and
Meet the Professor sessions are populated with International, National and Regional specialists with
deep clinical and scientific insight. And, of course, you – our Attendees – are the most important voices
at this Congress. It is your participation and engagement that distinguishes the World Congress from
almost any other meeting in this field. It is your interest and enthusiasm that challenges these experts
to question their assumptions, to break new ground and to help us build an evidence-based, outcomes
oriented, cost-effective, personalized, compassionate approach to patients with thyroid tumors.
We also acknowledge and thank our Industry Sponsors and Exhibitors, without whose support we
could not hold this meeting. We recognize their critical role in some of the most exciting recent
advances in our field: improved imaging, molecular markers, clinical trials of Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors,
novel surgical technologies, better complication management and many other areas.
The first two iterations of the World Congress on Thyroid Cancer were acclaimed as “amongst the best
thyroid cancer meetings in the World”. We believe that WCTC-3 will prove to be even more effective,
providing a unique venue to define current best practice, to advance the science, and to nurture the
friendships and professional relationships critical to advancing the care of patients with Thyroid Cancer.
Start planning now for WCTC 4.0, to be held again in Boston in the summer of 2021. Also, watch out for
news of an interval Congress – WCTC 3.5 – planned for 2019 in a location yet to be announced!
Welcome to Boston
Welcome to the World Congress
And welcome to the future of Thyroid Cancer!

His research is focusing on the molecular pathophysiology and genetics of thyroid and other endocrine disorders. Since 2013 he is the Editor-in-Chief of the journal Thyroid, an appointment that reflects his recognized expertise in clinical and basic thyroidology. Dr. Kopp is an author or co-author of more than 160 publications, including chapters in major textbooks such as Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine, Werner and Ingbar’s The Thyroid, and DeGroot and Jameson’s Endocrinology.
Martin Schlumberger is Professor of Oncology at University Paris-Sud. He chairs the Department of Nuclear Medicine and Endocrine Oncology at Gustave Roussy, Villejuif and the School for Cancer Sciences at University Paris-Sud. He is board certified in endocrinology, nuclear medicine and oncology.
He has published 335 original articles in English peer review journals, 80 revue articles, 60 chapters of books and two books. Since 2006, he is a member of the European and American expert taskforces that produced recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of differentiated and medullary thyroid cancers.
« Centre Expert National pour les cancers de la thyroïde réfractaires » of the network for rare cancers of the French National Cancer Institute. He chairs the Endocrine Tumor Group of the EORTC.
Dr. Lori Wirth is Medical Director of Massachusetts General Hospital’s Center for Head and Neck Cancers and Associate Professor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Importance of a Personalized Approach in the Risk Stratification of Patients with DTCCHAIR:
Steven Sherman
PANELISTS:
Jeremy Freeman, Leonard Wartofsky, Douglas Van Nostrand
2015 ATA guidelines have recommended an individualized approach to the management of patients with differentiated thyroid cancer. This strategy will help to assess response to initial treatment as well as guide disease surveillance and therapeutic management decision-making. Clinicians must decide whether to perform lobectomy, total thyroidectomy as well as lymph node dissection when appropriate. Pathology reports are key to informing disease status as are imaging studies using neck ultrasonography and/or 131I whole body scans. Thyroglobulin and stimulated thyroglobulin testing are also effective tools which can be employed. With objective information in hand, clinicians will be able to more confidently decide which patients can now be safely monitored and which may benefit from more surgery or radioactive iodine. The degree of available information, experience level of multidisciplinary team and patient preferences play an important role in the decision to treat and follow-up of DTC. Brief didactic presentations will illustrate the need for individualization followed by panel case discussions.
