1. Program Objectives
This short-term program offered by INSA Lyon is for students with Engineering and Science
backgrounds or interest to the fields. The theme of the program is “Smart City”. The main objective of the
program is to gain overview of topologies and protocols used in the theme through lectures in the related fields.
Students can also learn cross-cultural understanding through French language class, cultural experiences, and
interactions with local students. Students studying other topics can also apply to this program if they have an
Engineering or Science background and they meet “7. Program Eligibility Criteria and Requirements”.
*INSA Lyon: Institut National des Sciences Appliquées de Lyon is one of the Grandes Écoles and was established in 1957.
INSA Lyon has the longest history and is the largest in the INSA Group. The campus of INSA Lyon is
located in the city of Lyon (in southeast France) which has its history dating back to the Roman Empire.
Lyon is an industrial city with an incredible showcase of companies like Jacquard, Guimet, and Lumieres
Brothers, etc.
2. Program Contents
This program includes omnibus lectures about “Smart City” related topics (18 hours in total), lectures
about cross-cultural communications and French as Foreign Language (12 hours in total). The program also
includes field trips (day trip to Annecy, guided city tour, visit to the Musée des Confluences), interaction party
with local students, and dinner hosted by local families. The program is conducted is English, but includes
French as a foreign language. Please note that this program will be a joint program with Tohoku University
and other universities in and outside Japan.
* Note: Transfer of the three credits from the INSA Lyon to UTokyo credits is not guaranteed.
3. Program Period
March 9th (Monday) – March 20th (Friday), 2020 (Arrival: March 8th, Departure: March 20h or later.)

10 undergraduate students (See “7. Program Eligibility Criteria and Requirements” for details.)
5. Program Schedule (Planned)
Late October Deadline for submission of internal application documents. (The deadline for
submission depends on your faculty.)
Late November Announcement of the result of internal selection (e-mail)
December 20th (Friday) Preliminary information session (Orientation meeting)
Time: 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm
Location: Meeting Room1, Faculty of Science Bldg. 1 [East wing] (Go Global
Center) (Hongo Campus)
Early – Mid-December Receive invoice from INSA Lyon, payment of the program fee
February 8th (Saturday) Should you withdraw from the program before this date you will still be able
to receive an 80% refund of the program fee. No refund will be given after this
date. Details to be announced to those who passed internal selection.
March 8th (Sunday) Arrival, check-in
March 8th (Monday) –
March 20th (Friday)

6. Flights
The international exchange group will inform participating students of the requirements of flights* in the
preliminary information session (orientation meeting). Participating students must purchase a flight which
meet the requirements. The international exchange group will not answer individual e-mails/phone calls
regarding the requirements. The result of the internal selection may be suspended or postponed if students
have purchased flight tickets before they have been informed of the requirements of flights, or a flight
which does not meet the requirement. The University of Tokyo is not liable for any economic loss caused
in such cases.
*The requirements will include specific arrival and departure airports, specific means of arrival (by air only), prohibition of private
travel before the program, restrictions in the arrival and departure times, etc.
7. Program Eligibility Criteria and Requirements
Applicants must meet all of the following requirements in addition to those listed in the guidelines:
(1) Only engineering or science students (Applicants must be students who are enrolled as full-time
undergraduate students of either the Department of Interdisciplinary Sciences / Department of
Integrated Sciences / International Program on Environmental Sciences Course of PEAK in the
College of Arts and Sciences Senior Division, the Faculty of Engineering, or the Faculty of Science.
Students who are in the 2nd year and already are determined to proceed to either of the
department/faculty mentioned above can also apply).
(2) Students must possess sufficient proficiency in English to attend lectures in English and to conduct
discussion. TOEFL iBT 80, TOEIC 750, IELTS 6.5 or over (application without any documents
certifying English proficiency will be accepted, but may be relegated to a lower priority at selection).
Proof of applicants’ proficiency in French is not required.
8. Program Costs
Program fees: 1,550 Euros (includes; tuition, cultural activities described in “2. Program Contents”,
Accommodation (double room on campus, from March 8th to March 20th), meals during the program
(breakfasts, lunches and dinners from Monday to Friday / lunch on Saturday), public transport tickets
during the program, shuttle thicket from and to the airport
As described in “6. Flights”, airline tickets which meet the designated requirements should be purchased
individually by each participant.
※Others expenditures are to be paid individually.
9. Accommodation
A shared room for two students in a university accommodation will be arranged.
10. Scholarships
JPY 80,000 will be awarded those who are eligible and wish to receive the scholarships.

11. Preliminary information session (Orientation Meeting)
All students who pass the internal selection process are required to attend a preliminary information session
(orientation meeting) regarding this program that will be held on Thursday, December 20 from 7:30 pm to 9:00
pm at the Meeting Room1, Faculty of Science Bldg. 1 [East wing] (Go Global Center) (Hongo Campus).

in your university. He/she will gather your
nomination and send it to INSA Lyon. Required documents to apply : cover letter
+ resume + copy of your passport
All the applications will be reviewed within a
week. INSA Lyon will then contact you for payment and registration. A letter
of acceptance will be sent to you at the same time. In case you need a visa, please ask INSA Lyon for
an invitation letter.
When your application is accepted, you will have to send a copy of your
passport and an ID photo. Make sure your passport
(or ID card for EU students) is valid for
your trip to France.
A contract will be established between you and INSA Lyon.
Once you have signed the contract, you will receive an invoice to proceed with the payment before February
7th via wire transfer. If your university collects
payments, please contact the coordinator in your university.

Activities
Transportation during the program
DormsYou will share a double room with another student taking part in the SMART program. Your room is equipped with a small kitchen, a fridge, a kettle, cups, coffee and tea. There is a bathroom in each room (no hair-dryer). You will be given 2 tokens for the laun-dry service. Ethernet wires are provided for Internet access in your room. Otherwise, the campus is equipped with many Wifi hotspots.
CateringThere are 5 restaurants on INSA campus with catering available for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
TRANSPORTShuttle tickets from the airport to the city center are provided. We will arrange your transfer to the campus.
