PROGRAM OVERVIEW About Disney Musicals in Schools in Madison: Overture Center for the Arts is excited to launch its fourth year working with Disney Theatrical Group and local schools to bring Disney Musicals in Schools to our area. The program’s primary goal is to create sustainable musical theater programs in elementary schools by providing schools with the training and tools necessary to do so, and to share their students’ success. Elementary schools serving grades 3-5 in your district may apply for this special opportunity to work with professionals in the musical theater field. Together, you'll present a collaborative musical that will strengthen your school arts programming and develop partnerships among students, faculty, staff, and your school community. The process: Over 17 weeks (most schools are October, 2019‐ February, 2020 but this is flexible to meet your school’s schedule), your School Team will work with a team of trained Teaching Artists once a week for a 90‐minute rehearsal. School Teams are also required to rehearse for an additional 90 minutes each week without the presence of Teaching Artists which allow your School Team to practice new skills and techniques throughout the rehearsal process. Since our goal is to empower schools to continue producing theater on their own, these shadow rehearsals are a critical part of the learning process. A team of three to five teachers must commit to the program, including at least one arts specialist. Please note that Teaching Artist time is covered by the program however school staffing costs for the school team are not covered by the program. Selected schools will receive: A free performance license to a 30‐minute Disney KIDS musical (available shows include: 101 Dalmatians, Aladdin, The Artistocats, Cinderella, The Jungle Book, The Lion King, Sleeping Beauty, and Winnie the Pooh). Free ShowKit materials, including a director’s guide, student scripts, cross‐curricular activities, accompaniment and guide vocal CDs, and a choreography DVD. A Free video license for each school. Free 17 week residency in‐school support from a team of two Overture Center for the Arts Teaching Artists. Students and staff will learn musical theater techniques and prepare to perform a show through 17 Teaching Artist visits. Free performance opportunity at Overture with transportation. In addition to the final school performances, participants will also have a chance to perform selections from their school’s selected musical at Overture Center for the Arts at the Student Share Celebration which will take place in February, 2020 in Capitol Theater at Overture. Transportation will be provided for participating students.

The goals of Disney Musicals in Schools are to:

Create sustainable musical theatre program within elementary schools. Provide school faculty with the training and tools necessary to support student performance and

production, and to empower them to do so. Develop a critical awareness and appreciation of the arts within the school. Develop a strong community, including students, parents, faculty, staff, and neighbors. To expose students and school faculty to the wide spectrum of skills that are developed when

producing a piece of musical theater, including critical thinking, problem solving, ensemblebuilding, communication, self‐confidence, and interpersonal skills.

We had two new schools in 2018-19:• Sandburg Elementary School• Shorewood Elementary School

Schools returning for their second year include:

Frank Allis Elementary School Leopold Community School Nuestro Mundo Community School

Also returning for their third year in the program are:

Falk Elementary School Glendale Elementary School Hawthorne Elementary School Mendota Elementary School

During their second year, schools are gifted performance rights to a Disney KIDS show, a professional development refresher course and other show materials. After year 2 additional tiered resources are available through Overture.

Schools are asked to commit to at least three years of the program, though we hope it becomes an integral part of your school as the goal is for schools to take ownership of the program for their school.

What is the process: Over 17 weeks October‐March (flexible for your school), your School Team will work with a team of trained professional Teaching Artists once a week for a 90‐minute rehearsal after school. School Teams are also required to rehearse for an additional 90 minutes each week without the presence of Teaching Artists as a shadow rehearsal. These shadow rehearsals are vital to the success of the show and will allow your School Team to practice new skills and techniques throughout the rehearsal process. Since our goal is to empower schools to continue producing theater on their own, these shadow rehearsals are a critical part of the learning process.

Rehearsals follow three phases with the Teaching Artist, Phase: 1: modeling (TAs model the production roles), 2: team teaching (TAs and School Team co‐direct, co‐choreograph, co‐music direct, etc.), and 3: coaching (School Team takes the lead and TAs step into a coaching role).

The program culminates with at school performances (min of 1 public performance) and a Student Share Celebration – in March, 2020 where schools will be able to showcase parts of their production. Schools will be reimbursed for transportation to and from Overture for the Student Share Celebration.

What is the staffing involved: A team of three to five teachers must commit to the program, including at least one arts specialist. Please note that Teaching Artist time is included however school staffing costs for the school team are not covered by the program.
