Why Become a Teacher?

Teachers play a vital role in society; they educate our nation’s youth. During your career as a teacher you will get an opportunity to make a positive difference in thousands of children’s lives.

There are many reasons people choose to enter the teaching profession. Some are inspired by a former teacher. Others are passionate about working with kids and the subjects they want to teach. Many teachers are motivated by a desire to make an important contribution to society and their local communities.

Employment Outlook

Teachers are in high demand in New Mexico, especially in the fields of Bilingual Elementary, Secondary (Math or Science) and Special Education. National and state economic trends are also increasing demand for Career and Technical Education (CTE) teachers.

Salary & Benefits

} Salaries in New Mexico public schools starting at approximately $30,000 for first-year teachers, and ranging up to near $60,000 for experienced teachers

} Opportunities for advancement within the educational profession

} Family-friendly schedules

} The ability to move to different geographic locations

} Excellent health, retirement and other benefits

What can you do with an AA in Teacher Ed?

} Students earning an AA degree are qualified to work as educational assistants.

} Graduates can work as substitute teachers in New Mexico public schools.

} Graduates may also transfer to a four-year institution to pursue a bachelor’s degree, necessary for certification as a teacher.

Program Overview

The Teacher Education program at CNM provides targeted curriculum to introduce the educational theory and practical skills needed for teaching K-12 students in the public school system, as well as a broad knowledge base of arts and science classes. In addition to college coursework, students will gain experience working with children in the classroom environment.

Completion of the program leads to an Associate of Arts degree in teacher education. Five concentrations are available (see below). For more guidance in choosing your concentration, please contact the CNM Academic Advisement and Career Development Office at (505) 224-4321.

Elementary Education: for students interested in teaching kindergarten through eighth grade. Students may also consider the AA in Early Childhood Multicultural Education for teaching in Pre-K through third grade.

Bilingual Elementary Education: for students interested in bilingual instruction. Bilingual teachers are in high demand in New Mexico because of their ability to deliver instruction in children’s native languages. In New Mexico, individuals can be certified as bilingual teachers with Spanish or Native American languages.

Secondary Education: for students interested in teaching in seventh through twelfth grades. Secondary teachers must choose to specialize in a specific subject area such as math, science, language arts or social studies.

Special Education: for students interested in working with pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade children with special needs. There is a wide spectrum of special needs that qualify individuals for special education services, including learning disabilities, visual or hearing impairments, emotional disabilities, traumatic brain injuries and autism.

Career and Technical Education: for students who already possess a certificate or AAS degree in selected technical/vocational areas (see back page for complete list). Because career and technical teachers often teach in areas that are in high demand by area employers, many of these teachers play an important role in building partnerships with local businesses and industries. In New Mexico, individuals can be hired as CTE teachers with experience and an associate’s degree. The Career and Technical Education concentration is specifically articulated for transfer to Eastern New Mexico University’s online bachelor’s degree program in Professional Technical Education.
