Holland High Tech:
Global Challenges, Smart Solutions
We are proud to meet you! With over 110 exhibitors, the Netherlands continues to
have a prominent presence at Hannover Messe, the largest industrial trade fair in
the world. Companies and other exhibitors will be jointly presenting their products
and services in the Holland High Tech House in Hall 2, the Industrial Supply Pavilion
in Hall 4, the Smart Industry House in Hall 8, and the Green & Smart Mobility
Pavilion in Hall 27.
Dutch high-tech companies are among the top global players in their markets and
distinguish themselves by their technological excellence. The Dutch High-Tech Systems
and Materials sector consists of a number of interwoven industries. Our system suppliers
are able to manage complex industrial value-added chains and are increasingly becoming
the key to international competitiveness as they can adapt to the customer’s requirements
and take responsibility in the areas of product development, process development, serial
production and lifecycle management.
From the design of a system to its output, our creativity is the source of future-proof
products, applications and services, which are often developed in interdisciplinary, open
and international partnerships. In the Netherlands, we know that you have to collaborate
in order to perform at the top of your game, that it’s impossible to be the best in every
discipline and that companies and knowledge institutes must work together in open
innovation partnerships. Sharing knowledge in the precompetitive stage is not only a
challenge, but also an opportunity.

The Innovation Motor
The Dutch High-Tech Systems and Materials sector consists of a number of interwoven
industries such as the machine and systems industry, automotive, aerospace and
aviation. As well as the materials industry, that develop key technologies such as micro/
nanoelectronics, nanotechnology, photonics, advanced materials, semiconductors and
electronic components and systems. We know that companies and knowledge institutes
must work together in open innovation partnerships to share knowledge.
New Frontiers in Autonomous Systems Technology
(project FAST)Dealing with the unexpected – read: non-programmed events. For the soccer and care
robots of TU Eindhoven this is a routine task – after all, you never know what an opponent
or user will do next. Industrial robots, too, would benefit from increased independence
and autonomy. For this reason, the university together with industrial partners have set up
a pioneering research project to provide mobile industrial robots with an open world view
that adapts to changes in the environment.
The Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) formed a consortium with several private
partners (Diversey, Exrobotics, Lely, Rademaker and Vanderlande) to develop industrial
robots that will operate with increased independence and autonomy. The project –
called FAST (new Frontiers in Autonomous Systems Technology) – aims to develop
mobile robots with increased flexibility, which allows them to function more effectively in
environments that undergo frequent change.
The cooperation between TU/e and its partners will enable efficient knowledge-sharing
through which the development process can be accelerated. This will also help to
consolidate The Netherlands’ position as a global leader in the field of mobile robotics.
The goal of project FAST is to create mobile industrial robots that can adapt rapidly to
changes in their environment. This will deliver a number of advantages, for example a
robot’s working area would not have to be fenced off or demarcated.
- 7 -www.hollandhightech.nl @hollandhightech
This will be achieved by creating a so-called ‘semantic world model’, in which a robot can
give meaning to its observations. By recognizing specific situations and objects, it can
react appropriately in any given situation. This includes making a distinction between
a pallet containing goods, a group of people or a forklift truck. Robots could also be
programmed to actively seek information through which they can better assess a situation
to perform their tasks more effectively.
Want to see more?Project FAST is one of the many examples of how the government, the private sector
and research institutions in the Netherlands form partnerships to innovate. Join us at the
Holland High Tech House in hall 2 stand C12 the get inspired by organizations that are
actively involved - in what we call - the Dutch Innovation Motor. We are looking forward to
exchanging ideas with you.

Industrial supply
Techpartner auf Augenhöhe - Development partner at eye-levelDutch suppliers in industry have developed themselves over time from being a standard/
ordinary subcontractor to a development partner for their customers. Instead of
simply supplying manufactured parts as specified by the customer they get involved
in an early phase of the manufacturing process, i.e. the engineering or design phase.
Dutch “development partners at eye level” are easily approachable, equipped with the
newest technologies and using the most up to date process- and project management
skills. They typically work in collaboration with other suppliers in the development of
sub-modules and components and thus supporting their customers in a larger part of
the development process. Dutch suppliers often have a great understanding of the
challenges their customers are facing thanks to the close contact and long-term relations
they have with their customers. It makes Dutch suppliers well equipped to come up with
innovative solutions that make the difference.
Cooperation between Sennheiser and Nijdra GroupThe Dutch Nijdra Group have contributed to the realisation of the best headphone and
amplifier in the world: the Sennheiser HE1.
- 9 -www.hollandhightech.nl @hollandhightech
With its expertise in the field of
high-quality machining, Nijdra
Group have contributed to
the reproducibility of various
mechanical parts of both the
headphone and the amplifier.
In contrast to regular headphones,
the components consist of
aluminium parts that are milled
from solid material using 5-axle
machining.
Want to see more?Next to Nijdra Group, several other innovations are on display at the Dutch Industrial
supply Pavilion at D44 in hall 4.
Within the pavilion you will find Core-TeQ, showcasing low inertia carbon fiber rollers.
When implemented in the design stage of a machine, the total cost of the machine can go
down because of a lighter structure of the machine (lighter framing, side plates, electro
motors etc). The Carbon fiber roller - on display in the pavilion - replaces a steel EN-plated
roller of 4,3 kilograms. The carbon fiber roller weights just 1,3 kilograms.
Another great example of Dutch suppliers as development partner for its customers is
Jeveka. Because of its extensive relations with their customers, they noticed a growing
demand for fasteners and tools focusing on the high-tech segment specifically for
vacuum and cleanroom applications. Therefore, they developed a range of fastener that
are characterised by a standard quality of stainless steel A4-80 (1.4432), whereas most
industrial stainless steel is A4-70.
They also saw the need for stronger stainless-steel fasteners. After extensive research
and testing, they have succeeded in surpassing even their own expectations. The
fasteners are stronger than regular A4-80 steel fasteners. In each test the tensile strength
easily exceeded 900 N/mm². This means more flexibility for customers in their designs
and manufacturing process.

Smart Industry
The world is in anticipation of a fourth industrial revolution. This revolution is driven by
giant leaps in ICT innovation and promises to radically alter the face of industry in the
coming decades. Automated production systems using advanced robotics increasingly
communicate with each other on detailed aspects of production, joining up previously
fragmented manufacturing processes. By linking all steps in the value chain, a world of
possibilities opens for companies, old and new.
AmbitionThe Dutch ambition is to join the frontrunners and gain a strong position within that
group. The Dutch industry has every chance to succeed in this challenge and further
action to support this will be aligned with top sector policy. The Dutch business
community – large and small – holds all the keys to engage with this promising
development and to join forces with the frontrunners. The Netherlands has a strong
tradition of collaboration in networks and clusters. Add to this world class ICT
infrastructure and 93% internet penetration in households and it becomes evident that
the Netherlands are poised to play a leading role in Smart Industry.
Action AgendaIn November 2014 this approach is formalized in an Action Agenda. The Action Agenda
is an enhancement of the current top sector policy and the Technology Pact. The aim
is to make the industry more competitive through faster and better utilization of the
opportunities ICT has to offer. And we do that not only for the business community itself.
A strong and innovative industry provides growth and jobs. That is the higher goal. The
team proposes the following approach for this.
1. Capitalizing on existing knowledge
2. Accelerating in Fieldlabs
3. Strengthening the foundation
The main ambition in the Action Agenda is the creation of ecosystems - interrelated
networks of companies and knowledge institutions - around the core principles of Smart
Industry such as automation, zero defect manufacturing, flexible production, chain
collaboration, customer intimacy, value creation based on big data and on a number of
core technologies such as 3D printing and robotics.
- 11 -www.hollandhightech.nl @hollandhightech
A lot of knowledge and expertise is already present but fragmented. Therefore, the
Team Smart Industry has opted for an approach with Fieldlabs. Fieldlabs are practical
environments in which companies and knowledge institutions develop, test and
implement effective Smart Industry solutions. Fieldlabs meet the need for physical and
digital space for experimentation and accompanying facilities. In addition, Fieldlabs
strengthen connections with research, education and policy on a specific Smart Industry
theme. Fieldlabs meet the need for experimentation space and accompanying facilities.
Want to see more? Two examples of Fieldlabs can be visited at the Holland Pavilion in Hal 8.
FIELDLAB ‘”REGION OF SMART FACTORIES” - A consortium of 40 businesses from the
Northern Netherlands (including Philips and Fokker) developing concepts for the Factory
of the Future, with a focus on zero-defect manufacturing and ‘first-time-right’ product
development.
FIELDLAB “INDUSTRIAL REALITY” - The mission is to organize AR/VR information in the
European industry and to make it accessible and usable for employees of companies/
industry. This ensures higher quality of products and efficiency improvement.
You can meet these 2 fieldlabs at the Holland Pavilion and learn more about the Smart
Industry Initiative and many other products and solutions we offer. Let’s work together
and collaborate!

Green & Smart Mobility
Largest Smart Charging trial in the worldThe Electric Nation project in the UK is the world’s largest smart charging electric vehicle
trial, engaging 700 electric vehicle drivers. The current uptake of electric vehicles is
great news but can potentially stress the power grid. If 30% of all cars are electric, an
investment of 2.5 billion pounds would have to be made to strengthen the existing grid if
no capacity management is used.
This project combines smart technologies with new regulations so that cars can be
charged quickly without overloading the local network. As a pioneer in the field of smart
charging, GreenFlux supports the Electric Nation Project in testing various smart charging
technologies such as capacity management with load balancing. The effect is that more
cars can charge at the same time and cars can be charged faster.
- 13 -www.hollandhightech.nl @hollandhightech
The Dutch company GreenFlux can deploy a smart charging technology to avoid an
overload of the sub-station at high-load intervals. The smart charging algorithm considers
how full or empty a battery is, allowing prioritization to cars that need it more.
GreenFlux will also provide a smartphone app that will enable customers to request
charging priority themselves, overruling the smart charging algorithm when necessary.
The algorithm controls the chargers in a dynamic way so all cars are full in the morning
with the most efficient energy usage. Working with smart charging enables 10 times more
efficient capacity allocation and circumvents the need for potentially billions in additional
capital to provide new charging infrastructure.
Want to see more? This is one of the many use cases that GreenFlux’s customers run, using our cloud based
white label platform for electric vehicle charging. Come and visit the Holland High Tech
House at Hall 27 to meet with GreenFlux and many more Dutch companies active in the
field of Green & Smart Mobility.
