At New York Hebrew we pride ourselves in our students’ enthusiastic immersion in Hebrew learning.

Children learn to appreciate the significance of the Hebrew language and its relevance to them as members of the Jewish community.

Hebrew, particularly Hebrew reading, is the key to full and meaningful engagement in traditional Jewish experiences. Tefillah – Prayer, Brachot – Blessings on food, Friday night Kiddush and the Passover Seder all come alive at New York Hebrew. Through Hebrew, we do not only give our students the skills and knowledge they need to be prepared for their Bar or Bat Mitzvah, but we lay the foundation for their ongoing involvement in Jewish life and community.

We are committed to equipping each student with the fundamentals of Hebrew – from the traditional siddur - prayer book to today’s Modern Hebrew workbooks. Through stimulating strategies, students become familiar with the ‘building blocks’ of Hebrew, obtaining necessary language skills for fluent and accurate Hebrew reading, writing and core conversation.

The collaboration of our two specialized Hebrew language programs: The Aleph Champion reading program and the Sarah and David Literacy Program enables children to read and write Hebrew skillfully and quickly. Through this and many other unique and creative methods, New York Hebrew demonstrates that every child can enjoy learning Hebrew.

ALEPH CHAMPIONSHIP PROGRAM

Aleph Champ, modeled after the Karate Martial Arts system of motivational colored levels, breaks up the Hebrew reading process into bite sized

motivational levels which makes learning to read Hebrew an exciting time!

Students start as a white Aleph Champ learning half of the aleph bet. They work their way up through the different

“belts” until they become a black Aleph Champ with the ability to read Hebrew fluently from the Siddur (prayerbook).

Each Aleph Champ level has a color coded book, flashcards, workbooks and a medallion which is awarded once a level is passed. All of these factors work together to create the motivation needed for each child to progress at their own pace.

Reading groups are divided by color instead of age group, thereby allowing students to advance at their own level. This program ensures that when students graduate to a new level, they have truly mastered the knowledge-base at their current level. This avoids the common problem of children learning to read without fully mastering a letter, vowel or concept in reading.

sARAH & DAvID LITERACY PROGRAM

Goals

The Sarah and David curriculum was build backwards from Bar/Bat Mitzvah with the goal of addressing reading difficulties students continue to have with

accuracy and fluency in the upper grades. Beginning with The Aleph Bet Story and through to The Bar/Bat Mitzvah Book, both teachers and students have a consistent approach to use from year to year to reinforce letters, vowels and reading skills.

Using the curriculum, schools have found that they can introduce the reading process early, teachers learn instructional cues to guide the learning and students practice skills that can be applied to any reading exercise or text.

Learn to Read The Read Hebrew Primer teaches reading and writing only. The Primer teaches the letters, vowels and reading skills and includes the same skill and drill exercises.

The Aleph Bet Story is used alongside both reading programs when introducing a new letter.

Skill and Drill Practice The Skill and Drill Book prepares students to move smoothly from the primer level to the prayer book. Using cues and exercises students have learned in The Read Hebrew Program, students reinforce reading skills to improve accuracy and fluency.

Learning Tefillah and Reinforce Reading Skills

The Friday Night Book follows the learn-to-read program and can be introduced in fourth grade. The Shabbat

Morning Book can be introduced in the fifth grade. Both books begin with a reading review section. As students learn the prayers, a Reading Checklist continues to guide students through reading skills learned in The Read Hebrew Program.

Reading practice is followed by a study of the prayer’s meaning based on the theme, key words and phrases. Audio support is available.

The Bar/Bat Mitzvah Book The Bar/Bat Mitzvah Book continues the skill practice but also introduces topics such as an introduction to the Tanach and overview of the Shabbat Morning Service.

WHy We LOvE IT!1. The program offers an integrated system across grades for learning to read Hebrew

In the Read Hebrew program, teachers use a consistent approach to teach and reinforce reading skills. The Skill and Drill Book prepares the student to move smoothly from the primer level to the Prayer Book. In the Prayer program, students continue to practice all of the reading skills they have learned. As the children move up levels, teachers use the same instructional language to reinforce students’ learning.

2. User-friendly design- The design of the lessons on a page-by-page basis is intended to be very clear for both the teacher and the student. Teachers are given clear direction in terms of the objectives and techniques to be taught. These same features serve as clear instructions to the students.

- Big print, black and white presentation, repeating templates and activities serve to

support student engagement, facilitate steady progress and instill an “I can do this” feeling about Hebrew reading.

3. Learning is fun-Visual as well as sound associations for learning the letters are represented by The Aleph Bet Story and posters. The trigger question and letter description reinforce the letters and concepts taught. The goal is to remember letters easily and distinguish similar looking letters.

-Starting with The Aleph Bet Story, whimsy and fun is built into the books to make the learning enjoyable.

4. Hands-on reading activities reinforce accuracy and fluency

- ‘Beans’ for specific vowels; lots of scanning and counting activities

- ‘Beats and Baskets’ teach and reinforce blending and awareness of syllables. The goal is fluent reading.

- The student is constantly asked to “Pick up their pencil and read”.

5. Support materials are available through the website

- Audio support for the Primer, the Friday Night and Shabbat Morning Books and The Bar/Bat Mitzvah Book

- Video Workshops explaining how parts of the curriculum work, for teachers and parents

- Curriculum Support Tab – Teachers and parents will find explanations and translations/transliteration of vocabulary

6. Conversational Hebrew-Conversational Hebrew is introduced using a whole language, picture-based approach in The Picture Book, The Visit Israel Book and The Mah HaMatzav Posters. These materials were designed to provide the teacher with easy access to everyday topics and authentic scenes in Israel.

7. Hebrew Reading Starts Early The Aleph Bet Story Curriculum helps the learner see and note letter features in order to deepen retention and eliminate confusion between similar looking letters. Students begin to work with The Aleph Bet Story and CD in Kindergarten. The approach, consisting of a whimsical story, colorful picture and trigger question for each letter, is also helpful to older students who are learning or confusing the letters.
