What is a Polytechnic University?

President's Message K-P-YOUGoing to school is a big decision. Kwantlen Polytechnic University is here to support you every step of the way — from application to graduation.

For more than 30 years KPU has continued to grow and evolve, staying relevant and ahead of the curve by offering a diverse mix of programs and one-of-a-kind opportunities. Our name comes from the local Kwantlen First Nation whose traditional territory extends throughout the region. The word Kwantlen itself means “tireless runner” — and we strive to live up to our namesake.

We work tirelessly to support our students however we can, preparing them for meaningful careers and life as responsible global citizens. We continue to foster and develop relationships with the community, local businesses and other post-secondary institutions — at home and abroad. We have opened our doors to more than 250,000 students and counting. KPU graduates are employed in countless industries where they get to blend their passions with the skills they’ve learned here.

KPU Surrey KPU Surrey, often called the main campus, is the largest campus, easily accessible by public transit. Here you’ll find a variety of programs and student services, including:

Civic Plaza Opening in 2016, KPU Civic Plaza is Kwantlen Polytechnic University's expansion into Surrey City Centre — the downtown core of one of the fastest growing cities in Canada. With 30,000 square feet of post-secondary space, KPU's latest site in the tallest building south of the Fraser, is set to bring a breadth of courses, programs and post-graduate credentials to the area. Civic Plaza features:

Admission to KPUQualify under one of our four applicant categoriesHigh School: A graduate of a BC secondary school or the equivalent.

Transfer: An applicant who has successfully completed 24 or more credits above the preparatory level and has a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or greater.

Mature: An applicant who will be 22 years of age or older on the first day of classes who is not a secondary school graduate.

Aboriginal: An Aboriginal applicant who wishes to be considered for admission by the Aboriginal Admissions Committee on an individual basis.

Other Ways to Enrol at KPUApprentices: In partnership with the Industry Training Authority (ITA) KPU provides training to established apprentices.

Concurrent: BC secondary school students who would like to register in courses at KPU may be eligible as a concurrent student.

Continuing & Professional Studies: Students at all stages of learning may access educational offerings part-time, evenings, weekends and online through KPU’s Continuing & Professional Studies division.

Exchange: Students from approved partner institutions may be eligible to come to KPU as an exchange student.

General Interest: Non-credential-seeking students may be eligible to attend KPU as a general interest student and complete up to 12 credits before being required to satisfy admission requirements.

Visiting: Non-credential-seeking students who have a letter of permission from their home institution may spend up to one year studying at KPU.

KPU’s Undergraduate English Proficiency Requirement can be satisfied through any one of the following ways:

High School Courses

• Completion of BC English 12 or English Literature 12 or English First Peoples 12 with a minimum grade of C+ or Communications 12 with a minimum grade of A (or equivalents)

• Completion of English 12 with a C+ completed as part of the Adult Dogwood Diploma

• Completion of IB (International Baccalaureate) English A1/A2 (HL or SL) with a minimum score of 3.

• Completion of AP (Advanced Placement) English Language and Composition or AP English Literature and Composition with a minimum score of 3.

Undergraduate Courses

• Completion of 3 credits of undergraduate English (ENGL) with a minimum grade of C- from a recognized post-secondary institution where English is the primary language of instruction

• Graduation from a baccalaureate degree or two-year diploma program or successful completion of two years of study (60 credits) at the undergraduate level with a minimum 2.0 CGPA, from a recognized post-secondary institution where English is the primary language of instruction

KPU Courses

• Completion of ELST 0381 and ELST 0383 (or equivalents) with a minimum grade of B in both or ELST 0381 with a minimum grade of B and a KPU placement score higher than ELST 0383 level

• Completion of ENGQ 1091, ENGQ 1092 or ENGQ 1099 (or equivalents) with a minimum grade of C

Testing Options

• KPU English Placement Test (EPT) with placement into ENGL 1100

• IELTS: overall band of 6.5 with a minimum 6.0 in each band, taken within the last two years

• TOEFL: iBT 88 with no sub score less than 20, taken within the last two years

• CAEL: score of 70 or higher with no sub score less than 60, taken within the last two years

• PTE: a score of 61 or higher, taken within the last two years

• LPI: level 5 with an essay score of 30 or higher, taken within the last two years

Few people go from beauty queen to conflict-zone reporting but for Hayley that’s what happened. A previous Miss White Rock and Miss British Columbia Ambassador, Hayley came to KPU to study journalism after her interest was sparked by a CNN mini-series. During her time at KPU she traveled, trained and tapped into her passion for writing. Hayley’s now taking what she learned and applying it as the media specialist here at KPU.

Get an introduction to higher education and take courses focusing on educational psychology, curriculum theory and design, social justice and diversity in education, and philosophical foundations of education.

Keith knows his stuff. He has been involved in the arts and design industry for the past 35 years, during which time he’s drawn, designed, photographed and taught. Science and Horticulture Apprenticeships

Arborist TechnicianLearn safety practices, tree identification and an introduction to tree biology. Practical training includes tree pruning and the safe use of chippers, stump cutters, chainsaws and a range of hand tools. Apprentices are introduced to rigging, climbing and assisting climbing arborists from the ground.

Landscape HorticultureTechnical training is split into four levels, each six weeks long. Learn the basics of plant biology, pest and soil management, and business in levels 1 and 2. Levels 3 and 4 focus on landscape construction and planning. Apprentices also learn commercial lawn care and an introduction to pruning. Landscape Horticulture is a Red Seal trade.

Production HorticultureTechnical training is split into three levels. Learn the basics of plant biology, pest and soil management, and business in levels 1 and 2. Focus on the skills required to operate a commercial nursery including field and container nursery production, plant propagation, and plant health management, in level 3 .

Keeping the Public SafeKPU’s public safety communications program works closely with the Regional Transportation Management Centre, where several graduates are now employed. In 1990, KPU introduced the first public safety communications program in Canada, offering students an exceptional education with highly specialized training.

Computer-Aided Design and DraftingThis program offers the following options: architectural, mechanical or structural. Using leading-edge CADD software, you will learn to design, plan, build and/or manufacture a variety of products and structures. Graduates can secure employment as an entry-level CADD operator and continue to work while earning the certificate or diploma part-time. The CADD program is four semesters long, with the option to exit the program after 1, 2, or 3 semesters depending on the desired credential.

Public Safety CommunicationsLearn how to work in a public safety communications office as an emergency responder. Students learn about 9-1-1 calls and other operations that link the public to police, fire and emergency medical assistance. The public safety communications program is eight months long.

An individual can become certified as a Logistics or Distribution Technician by completing this program. PlumbingKPU delivers in-school technical training for Plumbing Apprenticeship levels 1, 2, and 3. An individual can become a certified Plumber by completing this program. Apprenticeship levels are six weeks long, and the program requires 6,420 hours of work-based training. This is a Red Seal trade.

Welding KPU delivers in-school technical training for Welding levels 1, 2, and 3. An individual can become a certified Welder by completing this program. Apprenticeship levels are eight weeks long and the program requires 4,500 hours of work-based training. This is a Red Seal trade.

Welding Specialty Metals Endorsement This optional program is focused on training in low alloy and stainless steel welding. The program is five weeks of in-school training plus 900 work-based hours.

Appliance Servicing FoundationLearn to diagnose and repair household appliance faults through customer consultation, control checks and schematic diagrams while working with hand tools. Additional theory and applications prepare students to write the BC Provincial "C" Gas Certificate. The appliance servicing certificate program is nine months long and includes Foundation, Level 2 and Level 3. This is a Red Seal program.

Automotive Service Technician FoundationDevelop practical skills by repairing vehicles in the auto repair shop at KPU Tech. This training will enhance students’ knowledge and skills in shop safety, inspection, diagnostics, repair and servicing of mechanical, electrical and electronic systems for automobiles and light trucks. The foundation program is 30 weeks long.

Carpentry/Building Construction Foundation Develop practical skills through an organized approach in safety, building codes, and the use of hand and power tools. Entrance Scholarships at KPUStarting at KPU for the first time? Then you may be eligible for an entrance scholarship of up to $20,000.

The Leaders of Tomorrow entrance scholarships consist of a President’s Award worth $20,000 and three Merit Awards worth $5,000 each. One President’s Award and three Merit awards are allocated to students in the following districts: Richmond, Delta, Surrey, Langley and Ridge Meadows. Additionally, a President’s Award and three Merit Awards are open to students graduating from any other school districts in the province.

KPU also offers several other entrance scholarships that range in value from $500-$3,000.

Information and application forms for the entrance scholarships are available online each January.

Scholarships, Bursaries & Awards Through generous contributions from donors, along with the university’s financial support, KPU offers a variety of scholarships, bursaries and awards in the fall semester.

Adult Graduation Diploma: Enables adult learners to complete their BC Ministry of Education secondary school graduation requirements in order to enter the workforce or post-secondary studies. Length of program varies.

Advanced Certificate: In some programs, students may complete additional specialized courses after obtaining a certificate, and work towards the completion of an advanced certificate. Length of program: up to 18 months.

Credits: Credits measure the student workload required for the successful completion of a study program or qualification.

Co-operative Education: Alternate terms of academic study with relevant, applicable, real-world employment.

Diploma: Enables graduates to pursue many different careers or progress into a bachelor’s degree program. Length of program: 2 years.

Full-time: A student who is enrolled in nine or more semester credit hours is considered to be full-time. This is the minimum course load required to qualify for a student loan.

Internship: A short work term where students complete a predetermined number of hours working in a position related to their field of study.

Limited Intake: Programs for which a limit has been set on the number of students admitted per application cycle.

Part-time: At KPU, a student who is registered in less than nine credit hours of study in a semester is considered part-time.

Post-Baccalaureate: These programs are designed for those who already have an undergraduate degree or the equivalent. This is a focused addition to an undergraduate degree, to help enhance employment opportunities or prepare for graduate-level work. Length of program varies.

Preparatory: Students can prepare for vocational or undergraduate studies by upgrading specific courses, or earn a specific preparatory credential.

Red Seal: This is the interprovincial standard of excellence in the trades. An individual may get their Red Seal endorsement by successfully completing the required examination.

Undergraduate: The post-secondary undergraduate-level of studies up to a master’s degree.

Vocational: A combination of education and training with an emphasis on practical skills and knowledge specific to a particular vocation or occupational field.
