What we do:As a part of a two semester design course, teams of Biomedical Engineering seniors are assigned to address the needs of a specific client who demonstrates a problem related to disability or special need. Disabilities include, but are not limited to: autism; brain or spinal injury; communication; computer access; CP, MS, & MD. Past projects have included walkers, transfer devices, pill dispensers, adapted toys and amputee training aids, memory aids, and emergency call devices.
Project examples (clockwise from the top left) A student demonstrates a customized changing lift to ease strain on caretakers. An automated device allows students easier access to the restroom. A team member demonstrates powered footlifts for a wheelchair. This specially designed desk chair gives a student with arthrogryposis better access in the classroom.
How we do it:Each August, teams are paired up with a specific client. After meeting with the client, therapists, caregivers, and/or family members, each team proposes a way to solve the client's problem(s). After the devices are constructed, if the device is workable and judged safe, it is given to the client for his or her personal use.
These projects are funded through the National Science Foundation. Clients will not be charged for
any materials or labor.
Each team will find unique solutions for their clients. Some designs are modifications of existing products (above). Other projects require building an entirely new device (top and bottom left)
