FOREWORD

WELCOME!

Dear Reimaginer,

On behalf of the Reimagine Education Steering Committee, welcome – for the first time - to the London edition of our global innovation conference. It is now the sixth year that we have sought to create a world -leading forum that unites leaders, change-makers, and experts from across the education sector – and we’re confident that this iteration will be our best yet.

One recurrent theme in education currently – in fact, across sectors and disciplines, as AI and big data weave their way into our lives ever-more-relentlessly – is that numbers alone cannot capture the essence of an experience or phenomenon. While the same is true of Reimagine Education, we believe that the numbers go some way to capturing the scale, complexity, and array of innovation on offer.

Over 150 showcase presentations will be featured on the Monday of our event: they all represent shortlisted applications to this year’s Reimagine Education Awards, have been recognized as outstanding by both independent judges and internal moderations, and, together, offer an unparalleled global overview of the work being done to enhance teaching and learning.

13 workshops will be featured on the Sunday. They are expert-led, highly-interactive, and designed to ensure that Reimagine Education is a learning experience – one that offers our educators the opportunity to train, develop professionally, and take an active role in the creation of our event: a constructivist, not transmissive, approach to educational conferences.

650 delegates are due to join us: 20% more than last year. They hail from 56 countries and all six continents. They hail from edtech companies and universities; from schools and educational not-for-profits; from government and the venture capital space. Education is now a global, intersectoral enterprise – and we are proud that Reimagine Education 2019 is going to reflect, and encourage, that reality.

Over 300 carefully-curated meetings between investors, educational consultants, and edtech companies are going to take place: a bid to help student-centric solutions scale to the next level, the next audience.

Nearly 90 speakers are going to contribute their unique perspectives on the future of education to the Tuesday of our event. They represent the full spectrum of educational endeavour: from Harvard, MIT, and Imperial College London (well-established, traditional universities with global reputations) to PwC (one of the world’s largest, most prestigious professional services firms) to Junior Achievement Worldwide (one of the largest NGOs in the world dedicated to educating young people about financial literacy, entrepreneurship and work readiness); to FutureLearn and edX (sector-disrupting, less-than-a-decade-old online education providers); to GCH Partners and Emerge Education (investors seeking to identify and scale transformational edtech startups).

Over 100 Awards are going to be distributed: education’s ‘Oscars’. They reward outstandingly effective, scalable, unique, and innovative educational initiatives: from Virtual Reality to Nurturing Employability, we’ve brought together – and will be rewarding – education’s most innovative minds.

These are just a few of the numbers that underline Reimagine Education – but we know that numbers can’t capture the full Reimagine experience. So enjoy the experience! Enjoy 72 hours of collaboration, conversation, and creation – and never stop innovating!

Building Interactive Games for Teaching & Learning

Sarah Toms Executive Director The Wharton School

Dear Reimaginer,

A lot has changed in a decade. The phone in your pocket is smarter. Your internet connection is faster. The algorithms that monitor your browsing habits are more sophisticated. Rapid digital innovation has transformed the world – the ways we teach and learn are no more immune to that than any other parts of our lives.

Reimagine Education highlights the very best of edtech, bringing together the industry’s key players – large and small – to spotlight and celebrate the giant steps being made in the sector. Imperial College Business School is a natural co-host for the QS Reimagine Education Conference & Awards: it is part of a College with a long history of technological and scientific exploration, and it remains at the forefront of pedagogical innovation.

Edtech is one of the UK’s fastest growing sectors, accounting for four per cent of all the country’s digital companies. In 2015, the industry was worth £45 billion, and that figure is projected to grow to £128 billion by 2020.

Nowhere is this growth more evident than in the nation’s capital, which has developed into a global hub for technology and higher education. The city is home to a vibrant community of edtech startups and educational technology co-working spaces.

In this dynamic environment, the role of a business school needs to go beyond research and educating students – our work should be meaningful. As a business school that is part of a leading STEM-based university, we are in an ideal position to work with some of the cutting-edge knowledge that is driving how our societies work today and in the future.

From next year, Imperial College Business School will have a presence on the College’s White City Campus, where it will be located alongside a number of exciting digital startups and established industry giants. At the same time, our executive education programmes translate Imperial’s world-leading research into real-world business practice.

We are leading the way in digital teaching by delivering world-class degree programmes online through the work of our Edtech Lab, and as a member of the FOME Alliance, a network of eight leading business schools committed to creating a globally-connected student experience. We are also proud to be co-hosting this event, which this year attracted a record 1,518 competition submissions.

I’d like to thank everyone attending this year’s QS Reimagine Education Conference & Awards – I hope you enjoy the event.

Francisco Veloso Dean Imperial College Business School
