ABOUT INDONESIAABOUT INDONESIA

Indonesia is a populous and diverse country and has 33 provinces and two special regions (Aceh and Jogjakarta).

The Indonesian government is a democratic republic and highly decentralized.

The country is the fourth most populous country in the world with approximately 237 million people consisting of nearly 300 native ethnicities and 742 different languages and dialects.

The largest segment of the population is the Javanese, making up 42 percent of the population, followed by the Sundanese, ethnic Malays, and Maduranese groups.

The opportunities of Indonesian nurses to work overseas are very high. It can be proved by the offers of various countries to Indonesia through The National Board for Placement and Protection Indonesian Overseas Workers.

The WHO 2008 data shows that the world is shortage of 3 million nurses in the USA, Canada, United Kingdom (UK), Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Qatar, Oman, UAE, Japan, Germany, Holland and, Switzerland.

Indonesia is not able to fulfill those demands, there will be replaced by nurses from other developing countries which are using English as their national language or as their second language.

Regarding nursing placement to foreign countries, Indonesia is still behind the other countries such as Philippine, Thailand, India and China.

The number of nurses who are unemployed in Indonesia is quite large.

Until 2010, the number of unemployed nurses in Indonesia reached more than 300,000 - due to zero growth of government employees, inability of the private hospitals employ nurses in adequate number, and the low growth in healthcare facilities.

TREND AND ISSUE OF NURSING EDUCATION IN INDONESIA

Hot issue at various nursing meetings both regionally and nationally is about concerning of surplus of nurses in Indonesia.

The Indonesian government starts to overcome the problem of unemployed nurses: Develop nursing practice independently in groups or

individually to the consultation, conduct home visits, hospice care for terminal patients

Nurses can perform and be actively involved in conducting research and research in the field of nursing

Government to facilitate and promote qualified nurses placement of overseas

Give sanction to the hospital or health care institutions that provide sub-standard wages.

NURSING EDUCATION SYSTEM

There are 33 Polytechnic of health under ministry of health which run D-III nursing & 598 academy of nursing under ministry of education that graduate around 50.000-60.000 graduates each year.

The BSN curriculum was developed in 1984, and implemented in 1985 as a Nursing program in the Faculty of medicine University of Indonesia.

MSN program was started in 1999 and PhD nursing program in 2008.

When compared to the amount needed to support healthy Indonesia 2010 as many as 6.130 people every year, there will be a surplus of hundreds thousands of nurses each year.

BASIC NURSING SCHOOL (SMK )

The basic nursing school at the beginning of Independence Day is a junior school plus a maximum 3-year nursing.

Because the basic nurses are still required then the graduates of SMK is not difficult to find job in Indonesia. This is the reason of students to register with the Basic Nursing School (SMK) is quite large.

Most of graduates are already working in various institutions such as in the hospitals, health centers and other healthcare institutions.

DIPLOMA III IN NURSING SCIENCE (Dipl III Nurs)

The objectives are to produce graduates who are capable in performing the professional nursing care in a healthcare system especially to provide service or nursing care to individuals, families and communities based on the rules of nursing.

They will play an active role in educating and training the patient and to develop themselves continuously to improve the ability of their profession.

They are mostly under the regulation of ministry of health of Indonesia while some others under ministry of education. Nationally accepted curriculum for Diploma III in Nursing Program is at least 96 credits.

BACHELOR SCIENCE IN NURSING (BSN) DEGREE

There are total 887 schools of nursing who run BSN program in Indonesia and under the regulation of ministry of education of Indonesia.

The total credits to complete a bachelor science in nursing are 158 credits

BSN degree is based on the belief that nursing is a unique body of knowledge and skills, directed toward assisting human beings in health promotion, maintenance, restoration and rehabilitation.

BSN prepares nurses as generalists that courses include both theory and clinical experiences in most specialty areas, such as adult, community, maternal-child, pediatric, psychiatric, gerontology nursing, and critical care nursing.

The Indonesian Higher Education (DIKTI) of Minister of National Education Republic of Indonesia and the Association of Indonesian Nurse Education Center (AINEC) are strongly concerned about the nursing shortage and nursing standard and to form collaborations addressing the nursing shortage around the world.

MASTER (MSN) DEGREE IN MASTER (MSN) DEGREE IN NURSINGNURSING

MSN program is only available at University of Indonesia, Jakarta.

Its curriculum is organized by clinical specialty and designed to prepare effective nurse clinicians and nurse scholars capable of improving practice through sound clinical judgment and scholarly inquiry.

CONCLUSIONCONCLUSION

In Indonesia, nurse program for foreign countries has been carried out by both government and private since 1980s.

This program has attempted to solve the false ‘surplus’ problems of nurses in Indonesia.

The Indonesian government (BNP2TKI) is concerning seriously to this nurse placement program.

It is proven by several efforts to promote the Indonesian nurse in foreign countries, the improvement of education and training, recruitment and others mechanism related to nurses for foreign countries.
