FOCUS ON THE DESIGN DEPARTMENTTwenty years ago Anglo Holt Construction established its own in house Design Department - a rare occurrence at the time and by doing so stole a lead on its competitors. That design serviceflourishes today with a team of 10 professional building design technicians led by Director, CarlSheppard achieving consistent and award winning results for clients like Travelodge, LandRover/Premier Automotive Group and Sytner Properties.

Carl Sheppard explains “Our construction work is not all exclusively designed in house. We alsointerface with many leading Architects’ practices but several of our clients prefer the ‘all under oneroof’ approach and the benefits that shorter lines of communication can provide to some projects. Our design team is the first point of contact in the seamless process of conceptionthrough to completion of the building project.

The management of change over the past 20 years has been a continuous process. The archetypaldrawing board has been replaced with sophisticated computer software and essential informationabout design trends, new processes and materials, building regulations and legislation is now instantlyavailable on line.

The common thread running through design projects such as the sparkling glass and stainless steelstructures of prestigious car retail showrooms for Sytner Properties; the bright welcomingambiance of budget hotels for Travelodge and huge distribution centres for global logistics firms isin achieving optimum running and maintenance costs.

It has become necessary for all companies to appraise their Green credentials. Our objective is tosuccessfully blend innovative design with energy efficiency to create sustainable buildings thatwork for our clients.”

ProfileBIRMINGHAM INTERMODAL FREIGHT TERMINALA £12 million project carried out for client IM Properties has provided the Midlands region with a new state of the art rail freight terminal whichwill act as an inland rail head to receive containerised freight from across the world via UK sea ports.

Aspects of the 13 month construction programme unique to the 35 acre site was the laying of 2km (1.24 miles) of railway track for 2 huge docksidetype mobile gantries to lift 12m (40ft) containers from up to 6 incoming trains per day. Two new bridges were constructed across existing rail sidingsto provide a main access to the terminal and to facilitate internal traffic flow.

In total 9,700 cubic meters of ready mixed concrete was delivered to site to pave the way for a 12 acre hard standing for heavy goods vehicle parkingand container storage and stacking park. One of the challenges facing Anglo Holt and consultants Farebrothers was the design and installation ofa storm water holding and discharge system constructed underground beneath the massive area of concrete hard standing. Designed to cope witha projected maximum rainfall of769,000 gallons the ingeniousbespoke system involved thelaying of 77 interconnected 1.8 m(6 ft) diameter galvanised pipesstretching almost one mile.

At the official opening ceremonyGraeme Clarke ManagingDirector of terminal operatorRoadways Container Logisticssaid “Anglo Holt did amagnificent job in building theterminal within the 14 monthcontract time and within budget.Lets hope that they play somepart in the delivery of theOlympic facilities in 2012!!”
