PROFILE

Prof. Bilqees Bano is an active member of the department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Life Sciences, A. M.

U., Aligarh UP India. She obtained her M. Sc., M. Phil. and Ph. D. degrees from this university in

Biochemistry. She has an excellent academic record and has been a recipient of prestigious merit

scholarships and gold medal (at undergraduate and post graduate levels). She has received several

fellowships (at pre-Ph. D. level from CSIR- JRF, SRF; at post-Ph. D. level from CSIR- PDF Award and

Pool Officer Fellowship. She has obtained advanced research experience at USA & UK at the university of

Pennsylvania (Indo-US Fulbright fellowship-USA.), NIH Fellowship Award (USA) and Queen’s Marry

University London (Commonwealth Academic Staff Fellowship-UK). Prof. Bano has 35 years of teaching

experience in various under graduate and post graduate biochemistry courses. Moreover, she has 37 years

research experience in the fields of proteins, enzymes and clinical biochemistry. She has supervised 22 Ph.

Ds, 2 M. Phil, 7 M. Ds and 36 M. Sc. Biochemistry projects. Prof. Bano’s current interest is in cysteine

proteinase inhibitors with particular reference to their amyloid formation and anti-amyloidogenic agents.

She has published 82 papers in high impact factor journals (Amino Acids, Mol Biol Rep, Biopol, JAFC,

Neurochem Res., J Fluor., Eur. Biophys J., etc.) with a mean impact factor of 3. She has authored

several popular science articles and has been conferred with a National award (Pollywood Star Media

Excellence Award in recognition of academic credentials under National 20 point Programme TPP-2006,

Government of India), Vigyana parishad prayag award for Urdu scientific Writing in for popularization

of science by Govt (2012-13). of India . She has given several popular science talks at Prasar Bharti (AIR)

and also given interview ar All India Radio (AIR). She has also translated a book in Urdu for

popularization of Science in Urdu. She has also published a book on “Diagnostic techniques for

myocardial infarction: based on plasma lipoproteins” (Narosa Publishing House) and co-authored a

chapter in a book on cystatins (Nova Publishers, USA.). She is a recipient of several research schemes in

Biochemistry from UGC, CSIR, ICMR and DBT. She has presented papers in various national and

international symposia & conferences. She has received several best paper awards. She is a member of

several scientific societies (ACS; SBC; TWOS). She also had been a member of the National organizing

committee (The society of Biological chemist India) and International organizing committee (Third world

organization for women in science Italy) as well as International Conference of Molecular Physics of non-

equilibrium system, Moscow, Russia (2002-2008). She was the member of the panel of experts for the

selection committee and advisory committee of NISCOM, CSIR New Delhi. She is a member of the

Steering committee of the OSU-AMU STEM education and research faculty project (2014). In the year

2016-17 she has been awarded prestigious BSR faculty fellowship from UGC.

TEACHING

EXPERIENCE:

I have been teaching courses in Biochemistry, especially courses in

proteins, enzymes, and biochemical techniques to undergraduates

and postgraduate students.

RESEARCH SUPERVISION

Twenty (24) students have been awarded Ph.D degree

Two (02) students have been awarded M. Phil. degree

(Field of study: Thiol proteinase inhibitors from plant and animal sources,

comparative study of various edible oils on health and effect of fish and olive oil

treatment on antibiotic nephrotoxicity in rats.).

Guided seven (07) M.D. students to complete their thesis on the topic “Cysteine

proteinase inhibitors, estimation of nitrite and nitrate, antioxidant enzymes level in

pregnancy and associated disorders”

Presently Six (04) students are working under my supervision for Ph.D degree.

Areas of research: Thiol proteinase inhibitors from animal and plant sources.

Under the exchange programme of (DST), an eminent Professor V. Zaitsev of Ivanovo State
