RESEARCH SEMINAR Date: 24 January 2014 (Friday) | Time: 4:30 - 6:00 p.m. | Venue: JG05, James Lee Science Building ABSTRACT - This presentation brings together the editors of the two leading journals in applied linguistics and TESOL ( Applied Linguistics and TESOL Quarterly ) to discuss strategies for academic publishing. The presenters will give a brief introduction to some key ideas in writing and submitting manuscripts and then open the session for wider discussion. Audience members are therefore encouraged to bring along their questions, but topics will include the peer-review process, strategies for evaluating and targeting particular journals and ways of responding to reviewers’ reports. Other topics will include how editors select reviewers, the criteria they use to screen submis- sions and what makes a good paper. Professor Ken Hyland The University of Hong Kong Ken Hyland is Professor of Applied Linguistics and Director of the Centre for Applied English Studies at the University of Hong Kong. He has published over 180 articles and 20 books, most recently Disciplinary Identity (Cambridge University Press, 2012), Innovation and change in English language Education (edited with Lillian Wong, Routledge, 2013), A Discourse Studies Reader (Bloomsbury, 2013) and Stance and voice in academic writing (edited with Carmen Sancho-Guinda, Palgrave, 2012). He is co-editor of Applied Linguistics and the Bloomsbury Discourse Series and was founding co-editor of the Journal of English for Academic Purposes . He is on the editorial boards of nine other journals. Professor Brian Paltridge The University of Sydney Brian Paltridge is Professor of TESOL at the University of Sydney. His most recent publications are the Companion to Discourse Analysis edited with Ken Hyland (Continuum 2011) the second edition of Discourse Analysis (Bloomsbury 2012) and the Handbook of English for Specific Purposes edited with Sue Starfield (Wiley-Blackwell 2013). He is a current co-editor of TESOL Quarterly , an editor emeritus for the journal English for Specific Purposes and member of the editorial board for the EA Journal , the Taiwan International ESP Journal , the Chinese Journal of ESP and the International Journal for Researcher Development .
