• MonitorstateofInnovationUnionandprovideinputasappropriatetothedevelopmentofERAFramework(CouncilofEUin2010)

• Produceroadmaps(Council2004)andprioritise projects(Council2012)

• Roadmapidentifiesnewpan-EuropeanResearchInfrastructuresormajorup-gradestoexistingones,correspondingtotheneedsofEuropeanresearchcommunitiesinthenext10to20years,inallfieldsofResearch,regardlessofpossiblelocation

• ESFRItoprovidehelpandbestpractice,butMSandACmustbethemajorsourceoffunding

• FirstRoadmappublishedin2006,updatedin2008and2010,andcontained48projectsintendedtofosterEuropeanleadershipacrossabroadrangeofscientificfields.

• Requiresmajorfinancialinvestment(~20b€)andlongtermcommitmentforoperation(~2b€/year)

• CouncilofEUin2014mandatedESFRItocompletea2016ESFRIRoadmapwithfewerandmorematureprojects

• ESFRIhasfulfilledthecommitmentmadebyMemberStatesandtheEuropeanCommissionfor60%oftheseprojectstobeimplementedbytheendof2015.

• The29ESFRILandmarksthathavereachedtheimplementationphasearepan-Europeanhubsofscientificexcellence,andwillrequirecontinuoussupporttofulfiltheirmissionandensuretheirlong-termsustainability.

• Todaywepresenttheupdated2016ESFRIRoadmap.Inadditiontothe15stillongoingprojectsidentifiedinearlieryears,six*newresearchinfrastructureshavebeenincludedthatfillinimportantgapsintheEuropeansciencelandscapetogetherwithtwonewinitiativesthatwehaveclassifiedaslandmarks

• These8wereselectedfrom20eligibleproposals
