ISSUE 121 APRIL 2017
Welcome to our Activity Guide!
Dirigo Potpourri
Thoughts on Overcoming Hate
Our world today is full of hate, prejudice, slander, malice and
envy. These can only be overcome when we become tender with
the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striv-
ing and tolerant of the weak. Each of us must try to develop friend-
ship with our neighbors, our families, immigrants, people we work
with and people we live with.
What is friendship? According to Webster’s Dictionary,
“friendly feeling is an attitude toward another.” Francis Bacon
characterized a friend as one, “to whom you may impart griefs,
joys, fears, hopes, suspicions, counsels, and whatever lieth upon the
heart to oppress it.” Friendships of this intensity are rare. Friend-
ships today are constructed piece by piece of little kindnesses over
the years.
If we are to put aside hate, prejudice, slander, malice and en-
vy, we must make friends with the people we meet, those we live
with, work with and those we have yet to meet. Confucius said,
“Surely it is the maxim of loving kindness: Do not unto others what
you would not have them do unto you.”
Life is too short to waste time hating anyone. Try to forgive
everyone, everything. All that matters in the end is that you loved
and were loved in return.

Natural Selection
Join the young Charles Darwin on an adven-
turous voyage of exploration circumnavi-
gating the World with the HMS Beagle. In
the 19th century in Victorian times many
physical phenomena were already discovered
and described by natural laws, but life’s most
eloquent mechanism was still unknown:
How could new species arise to replace those
lost in extinction? Darwin explored the ex-
planation for how life evolved and the fac-
tors which have shaped its development here
on planet Earth. Come explore how he used
evidence and reason to come up with the the-
ory of Natural Selection. Cost is $5.00. Bus
leaves at 6:30 pm on Friday, April 14th.
