PROFESSIONALISME OF A TEACHER

Introduction

An interview had been conducted on the topic, professionalism of a teacher between

Anis Nabila and Norhatiqah from 1P1D with Mdm Hjh Nor Asilah Bt Hj Osman, the

head of department of Mathematics in Institut Pendidikan Guru, Kampus Sultan Abdul

Halim, Sungai Petani, Kedah.

Question 1

Before we continue to our interview session, can you tell us a little bit about

yourself especially about your education background?

My primary school was in Sekolah Rendah Batu Pekaka, Kuala Ketil, Kedah and then I

continued my studies in Sekolah Menengah Sains Kedah. Luckily, on 1981, I got the

opportunity to further my studies at Kelvin Grove High School, Brisbane, Queensland,

Australia. From there, I got senior certificate as I did quite well and was given a chance

to have bachelor of Science- Mathematics and Physical at University Of Queensland,

ST. Lucia, Australia. However there were changes whereas I decided to take Bachelor

of Science Pure Mathematics Monash University, Melbourne, Australia. When I came

back to Malaysia, I continued my studies at Maktab Perguruan Persekutuan Pulau

Pinang with option Mathematics and Physics. A several years after that I got master in

management at Universiti Utara Malaysia, Sintok, Kedah.

Question 2

Why do you want to become an educator?

First of all, when I was in primary school, I wanted to be a doctor. When I was in

secondary school, I wanted to be an accountant but when I got the scholarship in Form

4 from Ministry of Education, it lacks me down. And a teacher career always became

my choice eventhough it is not my priority. I think I did quite well in this profession and I

managed to reach my goal.

Question 3

How long you have been in this profession from being a teacher until now?

I think it is 23 years that I spend in this profession. I started the career of a teacher at

secondary school and it takes 12 years before I join institution of a teacher.

Question 4

As we all know, the professionalism of a teacher is very important in this career.

So, as an educator, what method of teaching do you use in class to attract

students attention?

Most of the time, I will use the class teaching at the beginning of the class and I tried

very much to do group work so that student will enjoy doing their work and present to

the class.

Question 5

What is your opinion about the quality of previous teachers and the modern

teachers?

Actually the quality of a teacher depends on the teacher because some teachers have

their own quality and some of that had to search for it. My previous teacher has the skill

in controlling the class eventhough they did not use ICT. But nowadays depend on the

teacher and the students are different. They did by their own mind and the parent too

controlling their children. Those with our modern teachers have a lot of challenges. And

there were a lot differences with the modern educations rules that we have to obey it.

Question 6

KDP is one of the programs that have been organized by the ministry of

education to improve the professionalism of a teacher. What is the other

alternative ways do you to upgrade your professionalism?

Nowadays, we have many usage of internet, so sometime if we do not to KDP Program,

we still can upgrade our professionalism by finding the news or journal from oversea as

their educations level is ahead from us.

Question 7

Since you have been teaching for many years, of course you have face a lot of

challenges. So, what the biggest challenge you had faced and you think it is an

unforgettable experience?

As a teacher, you have other works to do beside teaching as example become a

discipline teacher as I used to be when I taught Sekolah Menengah Che Tom. All the

student is girl and the parents are factory workers. So, the discipline level is high and

their academic is low they do not interested in learning and did not come to school.

Actually after been teaching a long year, they know you, as they still remember and

respect me. Some of them already success and Im happy with that.

Question 8

Have you ever receive an awards or acknowledgement for anything in your

lifetime?

As a teacher, we always have these awards of excellent, I received one when I finish

my studies and they look your achievement in 1999. Im quite happy with that.. And I got

the other one in 2007. I feel that the effort I had given has been paid for .It worth with

my satisfaction as it makes me happier.

Question 9

Some of the teachers thought that the teacher profession is meaningless to them.

Can you share your feeling about this profession? Did you enjoy it?

From my point of view, teaching is good especially for the ladies. it is kind of. Educating

the children and this profession really suite me as I like to be with the students. From

that, I can share my knowledge and see the learning process of a student. When I see

they successful and they got the knowledge and applied it in their daily life. I m enjoy it

and I think I was born to be a teacher. Im happy in this profession and Im not going to

change it.
