Dr. Svedberg has a decade of industry experience with both small and large compa-nies (10 and 50,000 employees) in the materials science area and has also been aguest researcher at NIST for several years. Dr. Svedberg currently works withexperts from across the nation to develop, negotiate, and oversee scientific andtechnical advisory studies that investigate issues of materials science, manufactur-ing and engineering design. He has been awarded and overseen several research

grants and has published over 80 scientific articles which have been cited over 500 times, holds twopatents, and has started his own company.

4:45 p.m. Why Get Involved with Commercialization? Prof. Angus Kingon, Brown University

Angus Kingon is Professor of Engineering, and University Professor of Entrepreneur-ship and Organizational Studies. He is the Academic Director of the Commerce, Orga-nizations and Entrepreneurship Program, and the co-Director in the graduate Masters-level Program on Innovation Management and Entrepreneurship (PRIME) at BrownUniversity. He specializes in technology commercialization and technology entrepre-neurship, and has developed interventions to promote the commercialization ofemerging science in several countries. He has developed teaching methods for tech-nology entrepreneurship and commercialization that have been adopted around the

world, and also adapted for corporate use. At the same time, Professor Kingon maintains an activeresearch program in ceramic and electronic materials and nanotechnology. He has published about 340papers in refereed journals, edited 7 books, published 8 book chapters, and has 15 issued patents.Some of his research has been commercialized, for example in conjunction with Motorola for use inmobile phones. He was the co-winner of the Price Foundation Award as Innovative EntrepreneurshipEducator for 2006. He is a Fellow of the Center for Innovation Management Studies, and a Fellow of theAmerican Ceramic Society.

PJ holds a Bachelors in Physics from Trinity College Dublin and a Masters in Astronau-tics & Space Engineering from Cranfield University in the UK. PJ deferred his PhD atStanford University in the mid 1990's to found a software company, Clockworks Inter-national. PJ grew Clockworks from a one-person company in 1995, to a multi-milliondollar revenue business and a staff of over 70 by 1999, when he concluded a tradesale of the company. In 2007, PJ completed a corporate turnaround and privatizationof CNG Travel Group PLC, a travel and technology company. PJ restructured that com-pany and turned it from making a $23 million loss to making $4.2 million operating

profit within 12 months. After extensive research in the renewable energy market, PJ founded a newresearch institute ReResearch in 2010. The goal of the institute is to collaborate with the very best uni-versity research facilities utilizing goal-orientated management to seek breakthroughs in materials thatcan fundamentally alter the renewable energy landscape. PJ serves on the commercialization board ofthe CRANN Nanotechnology Institute. PJ is also a Founder Astronaut on Virgin’s space venture, which isdue to begin commercial launch operations in the next few years.
