TheinformationcontainedinthisHandbookisdesignedtoguidestudentsthroughtheeducationalandclinicaltraining experience requirements necessary for completing the master’s degree in psychology with aspecializationincounseling,andforobtainingeligibilityforalicenseasaMentalHealthCounselorasoutlinedinFloridaStatute491.ThedegreerequirementsfortheCounselingPsychologyMaster’sprogramaredesignedtobeconsistentwiththestatelicensurerequirements,however,theBoardofClinicalSocialWork,Marriage&FamilyTherapyandMentalhealthCounselingmeetsseveraltimesannuallyandmaychangetherulesoutlinedinChapter491atanymeeting.ItisrecommendedthatallstudentsobtainacopyoftheFloridaStatutes(Lawsand Rules) governing the profession. Students should stay current with changes and new information bymaintainingcontactwiththeFloridaBoard.

InformedConsent

DescriptionofCourseExpectationsandProgramExperiencesThecoursecontentandexperientialactivitiesintheProfessionalCounselingProgram(PCP)aredesignedtoaffordstudentstheopportunitytoadvancetheirpersonal,intellectual,andprofessionaldevelopment.Throughouttheprogramofstudy,youwillbeexpectedtoreceiveandintegratefeedbackconcerningyourpersonal,academic,andprofessionalstrengths,limitations,andperformanceasacounselor.Theexpectationsofthecounselingcurriculumarethatyouwillexploreandrecognizetheeffectthatyourpersonalbeliefs,values,issues,emotions,andbehaviorshaveonyourabilitytofunctionasacounselingprofessional.StudentsintheCounselingPsychology Master’s Program are encouraged to seek out experiences for personal growth and reflection (i.e., personalcounseling)whileintheprogramtoassistinthisself-reflectiveprocess.ThisserviceisofferedfreeofchargeforstudentsattheFIUCounselingCenter.The various teaching methods, courses, practica, and internships will require that you develop and demonstrate yourcounselingskillsasyouworkwithotherstudentsinrole-playscenariosandwithclientsinactualcounselingsessions.Youwillberequiredtoshareaudioand/orvideotapesofthesesessionswithyoursupervisors,instructors,andpeersforfeedback.Inadditiontotechnicalfeedbackaboutyourdevelopingcounselingandinterviewingskills,youwillbeaskedtoconsistentlyandsystematicallyexamineyourbehaviors,beliefs,andemotionsinrelationtoyourcounselingactivitiesandexperiences.StudentResponsibilitiesItisthestudent’sresponsibilitytoknowandfollowtheAmericanCounselingAssociationCodeofEthics.AccordingtotheCode,counselors-in-traininghavearesponsibilitytoadheretothelaws,rules,andpoliciesthatgovernprofessionalbehaviorattheplacementsetting.Furthermore,studentshavethesameobligationtoclientsasthoserequiredofaprofessionalcounselor.ImpairmentandRemediationIf,intheprofessionaljudgmentofasupervisor,instructor,orfacultymember,astudent’sbehaviorisdeemedsubstandard,unethical,illegal,and/orprofessionallyunbecomingatanytimeduringthecourseoftraining,astudentmaybereferredforfaculty review and remediation. At that time the Faculty Review Committee will be called to review the performanceevaluations,record,andbehaviorofthestudentandwillmakerecommendationsastowhetherthestudentshouldrefrainfromprovidingcounselingservicesand/ordevelopaplanforremediation(seeappendixinmanualforfullexplanationofpolicy).The2014AmericanCounselingAssociationCodeofEthicsprovides the foundation forourethicalstandards.SectionF.9.bstatesthat“Counseloreducatorsdothefollowing1)assiststudentsinsecuringreme-dialassistancewhenneeded,2)seekprofessionalconsultationanddocumenttheirdecisiontodismissorreferstudentsforassistance,and3)ensurethatstudentshave recourse in a timelymanner to addressdecisions requiring them to seekassistanceor todismiss themandprovidestudentswithdueprocessaccordingtoinstitutionalpoliciesandprocedures.”AttestationStatementIamwillingtoadheretotheprinciples,requirements,andstudentresponsibilitiesasdescribed.Ihavealsoreadthedescriptionofcourserequirementsandprogramexperiencesrequiredinthecurriculumfortheprogram.IamwillingtoparticipatefullyinthecoursesandrequirementsoftheProfessionalCounselingProgram.IfurtherunderstandthatacoursegradeofB-orbetterandaGPAof3.0orhighermustbeobtainedtoprogressin,andgraduatefrom,theprogram.______________________________ ______________________________________________________StudentName Signature&Date

PCPTermsandConditionsoftheProgram

ThisAgreementspecifiesthetermsandconditionsunderwhichtheSchoolofIntegratedSciencesandHumanityofFlorida International University will offer a professional program for students seeking a Master of Science inPsychologywithaconcentrationinCounselingPsychology.Eachstudentparticipatingintheprogrammustacceptthetermsandconditionsoutlinedbelowpriortostartingtheirfirstsemester.CohortIntegrity

A. Theprogramstructureisthatoflock-step,cohortprogram.Studentsneedtoadheretoprogramscheduleatalltimes.

B. Theconsequenceforskippingorunsatisfactorilycompletingacourseorprogramcomponentincludes,but

isnotlimitedtoa. onecourseforgiveness-withdrawfromcurrentcohortandjointhestudentsinthefollowingyear

to repeat the failed course when the course is offered again, should the program be offered.Forgivenesswillonlybeallowedforonecourse.Unsatisfactorycompletionofmorethanonecoursewillbecausefordismissalfromtheprogram.

ItisatthediscretionoftheProgramDirector,ProgramSupervisor(s),and/orCourseInstructor(s)whichofthe delineated consequences will apply. Decisions are made on a case by case basis and will becommunicatedtothestudentinwriting.

CurriculumA. Credits.Thisisa60-semesterhour,lock-stepgraduateprogram.Theprogramconsistsof6semesters(3-4

coursesperterm).

B. ClinicalExperienceHours.Studentsarerequiredtocompleteclinicalexperiencehoursasoutlinedbytheprogram. If a student isunable to complete thesehours according to their semester requirements.Thestudentwillbeconsiderednon-compliantwithprogramrequirementsandmaybewithdrawn fromtheprogram.Studentsmustreceiveapassinggrade intheclinicalexperiencecourseseachsemesterbeforemovingforwardwitheachstepintheclinicaltrainingprocess.ThisincludesbothPracticumandInternshipcourses.

C. LocationandSchedulingofCourseOfferings. Allof theprogramcourseswillbeofferedat theModesto

Maidique Campus or Online. Some courseswill be hybrid courseswith both an online and on-campuscomponent.Somecoursesmaybeonlineonly.Coursesthatmeeton-campuswillvaryindaysandtimeseachsemester.Studentsareexpectedtobeabletobeoncampusforvariousprogramcomponentsduringthedayandevenings,aswellasontheweekends.

D. MaintenanceofGoodStanding.Inordertoremainingoodstandingintheprogramstudentsmustmaintaina3.0(outof4.0)gradepointaverageduringtheirstudies.Additionally,studentsmustobtainagradeofB-orbetterinalloftheircourses.Ifastudentreceivesafailinggrade(i.e.agradeofC+orlower)thestudentwillbeseenasnotcompletingtheprogramsatisfactorilyandmaybewithdrawnfromtheprogram(see

sectiononcohortintegrity).StudentswhoseGPAfallsbelowa3.0willbegivenawarning,probation,and/ordismissalasoutlinedbelow.

a. Warning:APCPstudentwhosecumulativeGPAfallsbelow3.0willbeplacedonwarningforthe

followingterm.Warningindicatesacademicdifficulty.

b. Probation:APCPstudentonwarningwhosecumulativeGPAremainsbelowthe3.0afterthenexttermwillbeplacedonprobation.Suchastudentwillhaveonesemestertoraisehis/hercumulativeGPAto3.0orabove.Probationindicatesseriousacademicdifficulty.

c. Dismissal:Agraduatestudentonprobationwhodoesnotimprovehis/hercumulativeGPAabove

the3.0levelduringthenexttermwillbeautomaticallydismissedfromtheprogram.Thedismissalis for a minimum of one year. After one year, the student may apply for readmission to theUniversityinthesameordifferentprogram.

E. Expectations for Student Professional, Personal, and Academic Development. In addition to their academic

performance,studentswillbeevaluatedthroughouttheprogramonthreecriteria:

1. Abilitytounderstandandadheretothecounselingprofession’sprofessionalandethicalstandardsofbehavior;

2. Abilitytodemonstrateadequatecounselingskillsandcompetencies;and3. Freedomfromanypsychologicalimpairmentthatmayactasabarriertotheirabilitytoprovide

effectiveprofessionalcounseling.Ifatanytime,oneormoreoftheseexpectationsarenotbeingmet,thestudentwillbereferredforRemediation(seeRemediationPolicy).Studentsdeemedincompetenttocompletetherequiredcoursework,practicum,and/orinternshipduetofailedremediationeffortswillbedismissedfromtheprogram.AcceptanceofTermsandConditionsI,_______________________________________,haveread,understand,andacceptthetermsandconditionsstatedaboveinthisAgreementandintheaccompanyingProgramInformationandPoliciesbrochure.IunderstandthatchangesmaybemadebasedonchangesinUniversitypoliciesandStateofFloridalaws,rules,andregulations._____________________________________ ________________Signature Date

ProgramCurriculumDescriptionofCurriculumGoals:Topreparestudentsfortheindependentandlicensedprofessionalpracticeofmentalhealthcounseling.OurprogramfocusesonprovidingstudentswithasolidfoundationinCounselingPsychology,andopportunitiesforspecializinginarangeofclinicalproblemsanddiversepopulations.Objectives:

• Tooffercoursesthatemphasizeanevidence-basedstructureforcustomizingthetherapeuticrelationship(ESR’s)andtreatmentmethods(EST's)toindividualclients.

• Tooffercoursesandclinicaltrainingthatfulfillthemaster’sdegreerequirementsforaFloridalicensein

MentalHealthCounseling.

• To facilitate students’ growth toward a professional identity that focuses on development of counselorcompetencies,culturalawareness,andethicalstandardsinlinewiththeAPAandACACodesofEthics.

• To offer students an opportunity to specialize in a particular clinical problem and specific population

throughfacultyguidedresearchandselectedclinicaltrainingexperiences.

Policy&Procedurefor RemediationPolicy

AllstudentswillreadandsigntheInformedConsentFormduringNewStudentOrientation.Thisformisintendedtonotifystudentsoftheprogramdescription,studentresponsibilities,andproceduresfordealingwithstudentremediation.

If,intheprofessionaljudgmentofasupervisor,instructor,orfacultymember,astudentisdeemedsubstandard,unethical,illegal,and/orprofessionallyunbecomingatanytimeduringthecourseoftraining,astudentmaybereferredforfacultyreviewandremediation.Remedialinterventionsmayincludepersonaltherapy,increasedsupervision,therepetitionofacademicandclinicalcoursework,additionalassignments,andstudentrestrictionswithintheprogram.Thestudentmayalsoberequiredtotake1-2semestersofRemedialProfessionalDevelopment.

Procedure

ThestudentwillbenotifiedinpersonbytheProgramDirectororFacultyClinicalSupervisorthatimpairmentinthestudent’sperformancehasbeennoted,andthathisorherrecordisunderreviewbytheFacultyReviewCommittee.ANotificationofImpairmentFormwillbesignedbythestudentindicatingthattheywereinformedoftheinitiationofthisprocess.

TheFacultyReviewCommittee(madeupofasubcommitteeofthecounselingprogramfaculty)willmeettoreviewanddiscussthestudent’sperformanceevaluation,records,andbehavior.

AnIndividualizedRemediationPlanwillbeinitiatedbythecommitteetoidentifythecompetencyareasthatfallbelowstandardrange.

TheFacultySupervisorwillmeetwiththestudenttofurtherdeveloptheIndividualizedRemediationPlan,basedontheidentifiedcompetencyareasthatareinneedofremediation,withcorrespondinggoalstoaddresseacharea.

TheRemediationPlanwillbereviewedthroughoutthesemestertodeterminethestudent’sreadinesstoprogressintheprogram.Atthistime,(1)afurtherplanforremediationwillbedeveloped,(2)adecisionwillbemadetoadvancethestudentinthepracticumorinternship,or(3)thestudentwillbedismissedfromtheprogram.

CopiesoftheInformedConsent,NotificationofImpairment,andIndividualizedRemediationPlanwillbeprovidedtotheStudent,ProgramDirector,andFacultySupervisor.Copieswithbeplacedinthestudent’sfile.Inaddition,theDirectorofGraduateStudiesandtheDepartmentChairmaybeconsulted.

Fall2013 COURSEDESCRIPTIONPurpose:Thepurposeofthiscourseistofacilitatethecounselingstudent’sprofessionaldevelopmentandprovidesupporttothestudentthroughtheremediationprocess.TheCACREPStandardsrequirethatprogramshaveastudentretentionpolicythataddressesremediationprocedures(2009,Section.L).TheStandardsglossaryfurtherdefinesstudentretentionpolicyas“thepolicybywhichprogramfacultymembersevaluateeachstudentforacademic,professional,andpersonalfitnesstocontinueinacounselingprogram...(p.62).Whencounseloreducatorsbecomeawarethatastudent’scompetenceisinterferingwithperformance,thestudentshouldbeofferedremedialassistancetoaddresstheissuesathand(ACACodeofEthicsF.9.b.).StudentswithanyimpairmentshouldrefertoACACodeofEthicC.2.b.Remedialinterventionsmayincludepersonaltherapy,increasedsupervision,therepetitionofacademicandclinicalcoursework,additionalassignments,andstudentrestrictionswithintheprogramassupportedinrelevantliterature(Biaggio,Gasparikova-Krasnec,&Bauer,1983;Bradey&Post,1991;Fly,vanBark,Weinman,Kitchener,&Lang,1997;Henderson,2010;Kress&Protivnak,2009;Lambetal.,1987;McAdams&Foster,2007;Olkin&Gaughen,1991;Procidano,BuschRossnagel,Reznikoff,&Geisinger,1995;Russell&Peterson,2003).COURSEOBJECTIVES
