DIRT OVERBOARD!The cleaning of cargo ships is a compli-cated matter that demands expertise and know-how. The cleaning work cannot disturb the operations on deck, but it must still be carried out as thoroughly as possible – without harming the environ-ment with contaminated water.

For this reason Kärcher developed cleaning solutions that are adapted ef�ciently to the conditions on deck. This way the cleaning work can be optimally inte-grated into the day-to-day life on board.

SAFETY IS A CLEAN-CUT AFFAIR.

Regardless of how a cargo ship is designed – all decks have one thing in common. The deck is always directly exposed to the harsh everyday conditions at sea. This means: salt water, oil and grease attack the ship’s paint-work and steel. A deck in poor condition is a risk not only for the ship itself, but also for the entire crew.

It is therefore important to thoroughly remove all residue on a regular basis in order to guarantee the impeccable condition of the deck. This is best done using high- pressure cleaners from Kärcher. High-pressure cleaners allow fast work and are therefore perfect for the short time slots in everyday life on board.

WITHSTANDING WIND AND WEATHER

Like the crew itself, the painted decks on board are constantly exposed to the harsh weather at sea. High-temperature cycles, heat concentrations, UV radiation and falling objects damage the paintwork, which acts as a protective layer for the metal. However, it is mainly the salt water that is responsible for weathering the paint over time and making it porous.

So that the sheet metal surfaces always remain well pro-tected, it is necessary to regularly repaint the protective

layer. In order for the paint to properly adhere, the old paint must be completely stripped.

Kärcher high-pressure cleaners work at 500 or 1000 bar and therefore remove the paintwork reliably so that no additional abrasives are required. This way the surface is prepared for the subsequent paintwork.

The cargo hold cleaning generally takes place in the port between loading and unloading. As these operations are becoming more and more ef� cient and faster, so too must the cleaning process.

That’s why Kärcher developed modern cargo hold cleaning solutions. They help shipowners and operators increase cleaning ef� ciency and reliably clear the cargo hold of all residue from the last cargo.
